The best steakhouses in Montreal for 2026

Updated June 19, 2026

Montreal is one of Canada’s most compelling food cities — a place where French culinary tradition runs deep and a perfectly cooked steak is treated as a serious craft. The dining scene spans centuries-old stone buildings in Vieux-Montréal to sleek downtown rooms where business crowds and hockey fans share the same tables, and everything in between. The city’s best steak restaurants in Montreal range from multi-decade institutions that have been ageing prime beef long before dry-ageing became a trend, to contemporary brasseries where house-aged cuts are given the same rigour as the wine list. Whether the draw is USDA prime beef broiled over a charcoal pit, on-site dry-aged cuts prepared with French brasserie precision, or a classic prime rib finished with red wine jus, the top steakhouses in Montreal know how to make a meal feel like an event.

Steakhouse
Downtown

At Place Ville-Marie, tucked within the heart of downtown Montreal’s business district, The Keg makes a strong case for why this Canadian steakhouse brand has remained a national institution since 1971. The dining room — dim lighting, rich wood finishes, an inviting bar area — creates a warm, polished atmosphere that suits post-work drinks and milestone dinners in equal measure. The menu centres on prime rib slow-roasted and finished with red wine herb jus, filet mignon wrapped in bacon with béarnaise sauce, and New York striploin for those who want flavour and weight on the plate. Mushrooms neptune — mushroom caps filled with crab and cream cheese — and tuna tartare make for considered starters, while the Billy Miner pie is the dessert to finish on.

Downtown Montreal has no shortage of strong steakhouse options, but few combine the spirit of a classic deli with a serious steak menu quite like Reuben’s Deli & Steakhouse. A long-standing Montreal institution, Reuben’s has built its place in the city’s culinary landscape on two pillars: legendary smoked meat — a quintessentially Québécois tradition — and premium cuts of beef, all delivered with the warm, generous hospitality that makes guests feel at home from the very first visit. The convivial downtown setting suits a solo lunch as comfortably as a full table gathered to celebrate something worthwhile. For those who want a taste of Montreal’s true dining character alongside their steak, look no further than Reuben’s.

Sam the bartender was amazing. He obviously knew lots of customers. He was very attentive to everyone. He makes delicious drinks.

Old Montreal

Steps from Place Jacques-Cartier in Old Montreal, Maggie Oakes brings a confident contemporary edge to the neighbourhood’s dining scene. Part of the Gray Collection, the restaurant blends French brasserie warmth with lively Montreal energy — a setting that works as well for a leisurely brunch as it does for a refined dinner with bottles drawn from an extensive private-import wine list. The kitchen’s identity is built around house dry-aged beef, with cuts aged on site for a minimum of 35 days before being grilled with precision. Weekly promotions — the Steak Frites Society every Tuesday, featuring a favourite cut with unlimited golden fries, and Oysters & Bubbles every Thursday — have made it a firm regular on the Old Montreal circuit. For one of the best steak restaurants in Montreal, book at Maggie Oakes.

Just a bit disappointed that 2 of the 4 choices for Montreal a Table were not available. Otherwise what we have tasted was very good.

Old Montreal

Rue Saint-Paul is one of Old Montreal’s most historic and recognisable streets, and Vieux-Port Steakhouse has been a cornerstone of it since 1983. Set beneath timber beams and period stone walls that speak directly to the neighbourhood’s centuries-old character, the kitchen’s approach has remained consistent over the decades: select quality cuts with care, grill them to the perfect doneness and trust the integrity of the product. A seasonal garden terrace — covered and heated for cooler evenings — adds a memorable open-air dimension in the warmer months, while the stone-walled interior holds its own in every season. Weekend brunch and weekday lunch menus make it a well-rounded destination at almost any hour.

We had a great evening here. The service was timely and attentive, and our server was warm and helpful. We sampled from the MTLaTable menu and the portions were generous and the choices were varied. All of the food was delicious and perfectly prepared and served! Definitely somewhere we would return to.

Since 1969, Gibbys has been one of Old Montreal’s most enduring dining addresses — a restaurant that has outlasted trends by doing what it does consistently and with care. The setting is unmistakably Vieux-Montréal: stone walls, historic architecture and an atmosphere that makes every dinner feel like an occasion rather than just a meal out. The menu draws from the classic surf-and-turf tradition — fresh oysters, a broad selection of carefully chosen seafood and fish, and meats that are aged and prepared to the kitchen’s exacting standard. Private dining for corporate suppers and special celebrations is thoughtfully catered for, with a table configuration that adapts well to different group sizes. For the full sweep of Montreal’s steakhouse heritage, Gibbys is a must-visit.

West Island

Just minutes from the airport in Pointe-Claire, 40 Westt has made a compelling case for the West Island as a serious steakhouse destination. The Hotel Look ambiance — polished and a little theatrical — sets the scene for evenings anchored by the restaurant’s own Belvedere Brand label, overseen by chef Stefano Hinoropos: corn-fed Ontario beef, dry-aged in on-site meat lockers kept in plain view as a deliberate mark of transparency. An open market display of beef and fresh fish lets guests choose their own cut before it reaches the kitchen — a rare and welcome touch. Filet mignon brochette, grilled veal chop and seasonal seafood round out a menu that goes beyond the expected, while outstanding martinis and live jazz performances give each evening a spirited, unhurried rhythm.

Impeccable service and food quality. It is among the rare restaurants who managed to keep the same great quality across the board.

Steakhouse
Downtown

The open kitchen is Firegrill’s calling card — at this downtown Montreal steakhouse, the cooking is as much a part of the atmosphere as the room itself. Aged premium cuts are grilled to order, while racks of ribs glazed in mesquite barbecue sauce and a rotating daily selection of fresh fish keep the menu from feeling one-dimensional. The philosophy is refreshingly clear: the finest ingredients, consistent execution, and a pace that runs comfortably from lunch through to a late supper. A second location in Ville Saint-Laurent extends the concept for those dining on that side of the city. For a downtown steakhouse that leads with quality without any unnecessary fuss, Firegrill is a must-visit.

Over six decades in the business, Rib N Reef has built a reputation that extends well beyond Montreal — the steakhouse holds a place on the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants list, a distinction that reflects more than 63 years of gastronomic expertise. Located near Quartier Royalmount in Côte-des-Neiges, the dining room channels timeless sophistication: classic service, elegant styling and an undeviating focus on beef done properly. USDA Prime Midwestern beef, raised without antibiotics, is aged on the premises using both wet and dry methods, then hand-cut into seven distinct cuts and broiled over an open charcoal pit. A cigar lounge provides a fitting conclusion for those inclined to linger long after the plates have been cleared.
