Montreal’s dining scene operates on a set of pleasures that are hard to replicate anywhere else in North America: the ease of a long, unhurried table, wine brought from home, a kitchen that takes flavour seriously and lets the food do the talking. The best affordable tasting menus in Montreal lean into all of it — from a North African mezze table in Little Italy built on local seasonal produce to a seven-course Syrian tasting on Saint-Laurent, a Peruvian sharing feast in the Salle Urbaine on Saint-Denis, and a late-night Portuguese menu in the heart of downtown that stretches well past nine.

Whether the plan is a pre-theatre prix fixe, a plant-based group dinner steps from Place des Arts, or a Japanese BBQ course designed to save up to 20 per cent on the full menu, Montreal’s tables deliver genuine value across every neighbourhood.

Little Italy

Darna Bistroquet brings North African cooking to the heart of Rosemont–La-Petite-Patrie, where the name itself sets the tone: darna means “our home” in Moroccan Arabic, and the dining room lives up to it with a menu built on farm-to-table principles, a wine list composed entirely of organic bottles offered mostly by the glass, and a kitchen that keeps vegetables at the centre of every plate. The menu is seasonal and ever-evolving, with a strong orientation toward sharing and discovery — dishes change with local producers, making each visit distinct. The Petits Mercredis et Jeudis table d’hôte at $40per person covers three services: a shared first course, a free choice from the full à la carte for the second, and a third course of either dessert or an additional dish. It is a format that gives diners access to the full depth of the kitchen at one of the neighbourhood’s most distinctive addresses, at a price that rewards midweek booking.

Japanese
Downtown

Gyu-Kaku brings the Japanese yakiniku tradition — grilling at the table, at the diner’s own pace — to one of downtown Montreal’s most social addresses, with a convivial format that suits groups, first dates, and every occasion in between. The prix fixe BBQ courses save up to 20 per centon the à la carte and are designed to work for parties of all sizes and appetites. The Value Course at $43per person opens with a Gyu-Kaku salad, miso soup, white rice, and edamame, before the grill takes over: sukiyaki bone-in kalbi, yaki-shabu beef in miso, toro beef in sweet soy tare, Angus beef ribs in sweet soy tare, umakara pork, chicken with basil, and assorted vegetables. For a more expansive evening, the Chef’s Choice course at $54per person adds prime kalbi short rib, harami skirt steak, filet mignon with salt and pepper, umakara ribeye, pork belly, garlic shrimp, and a broccoli and cheese fondue — closing with s’mores. The larger group courses scale up accordingly, with the Yakiniku Party for four at $44.50per person and the Gyu-Kaku Feast for six at $41.67per person.

Greek
Griffintown/St-Henri

Petros Griffintown on Rue William is a Greek taverna in the truest sense — a welcoming, lively room that channels the spirit of a sun-drenched island meal with fresh fish, mezze, and charcoal-grilled proteins at the heart of the menu. Part of the Petros family of restaurants across Montreal, the Griffintown location brings market-driven Greek cooking to one of the city’s fastest-evolving neighbourhoods, with a wine policy that invites guests to bring their own bottle and make an evening of it. The weekday table d’hôte at $50per person delivers three courses that draw on the kitchen’s Greek signatures — fresh seafood, classic mezze, and grilled mains — in a progression designed for a relaxed, sociable dinner. The format suits couples and groups equally, and the combination of a fair price, BYO wine, and cooking rooted in genuine Greek tradition makes Petros one of the more compelling reasons to cross into Griffintown for dinner.

Portuguese
Downtown

Ferreira Café has been one of downtown Montreal’s most trusted Portuguese addresses for close to three decades — a landmark room built on the conviction that Portuguese cuisine, given the right produce and the right care, belongs in the same conversation as any other great European tradition. The dining room on Rue Peel carries 29 years of accumulated warmth and has a loyal following that keeps coming back for the seafood, the wine, and the atmosphere. L’Après 9 at $55per person is the kitchen’s late-night table d’hôte: fresh oysters, whole grilled fish, octopus, and the restaurant’s celebrated fish and seafood bouillabaisse — a menu designed to extend the evening rather than rush it, with the energy and conviviality of a Lisbon meal that spills past midnight. For a late dinner built on Portugal’s finest coastal ingredients in a room that has earned its longevity, Ferreira remains the standard-setter.

Beautifully renovated, the Ferreira is a Montreal institution not to be missed. The Après 9 menu is also such a great deal when looking for a late night dinner. The quality of the food and the service is unbeatable.

Peruvian
Plateau Mont-Royal

Barranco on Rue Saint-Denis in the Plateau Mont-Royal transports the bohemian coastal energy of Lima’s Barranco neighbourhood to one of Montreal’s most animated streets — a dining room that blends Peruvian street food, tapas-style sharing plates, and cocktails anchored by the perfect pisco sour into a night that rarely ends quietly. The Salle Urbaine, set at the heart of the restaurant on Saint-Denis, is where the kitchen’s group sharing menu La Mesa Peru at $65per person— the kitchen’s group sharing menu — comes alive. For parties of four or more, the feast moves through Peru’s culinary landscape with real breadth: fresh ceviche, grilled anticuchos, crispy jalea mixta, and wok-tossed lomo saltado — a progression that reads as much as a celebration of Peruvian cooking as it does a menu. For a group dinner that calls for energy, discovery, and a round of pisco sours, Barranco delivers the kind of table that becomes the evening.

Syrian
Plateau Mont-Royal

Brocard on the Plateau Mont-Royal is one of Montreal’s most distinct dining rooms: a Syrian restaurant where the cooking goes well beyond the familiar mezze shorthand and into the full depth of the country’s culinary traditions, drawing on dishes passed down through generations alongside the kitchen’s own creative instincts. La Table Syrienne at $60per person is a tasting menu that captures the breadth of that range — fresh salads, mezze, and family-recipe dishes from grandmother’s kitchen lead into grilled meats and a refreshing dessert, in a progression that is genuinely hard to find replicated anywhere else in the city. The format is built for sharing and discovery, suited to groups who want to hand the meal over to the kitchen and trust where it goes. For a tasting that takes Syrian cuisine seriously as both tradition and living cooking, Brocard is a compelling reservation.

Absolutely delicious, our waiter added immensely to a wonderful evening. But please… remove those horrible potatoes from the plates with your delicious grilled meats. Rice would be perfect, not frozen potatoes. Otherwise, simply delicious. Can’t wait to return.

Downtown

LOV on McGill College Avenue is one of Montreal’s most established plant-based dining rooms — a bright, design-forward space that takes vegetarian and vegan cooking seriously as an expression of flavour and craft rather than as a constraint. The group menu at $39per person covers three courses: a choice of arugula salad, arancini, or beet and avocado tartare to start; a main of LOV’s veggie coconut curry, the Big LOV plant-based cheeseburger with fries or salad, or butternut squash ravioli; and a dessert of homemade brownie or lime coconut cheezecake — with unlimited sparkling water included throughout. For a more expansive table, the five-course group menu at $49per person adds a LOV salad and a choice of crispy parmesan melt or mushroom dumplings before moving through konjac salmon tartare or golden arancini, a main of butternut squash ravioli or truffle mushroom risotto, and the same dessert options. One of the most accessible and well-considered plant-based group dining propositions in the city.

Latin American
Old Montreal

Sabrosa at 404 Place Jacques-Cartier sits in a historic stone building at the heart of Old Montreal — a room that blends the energy of Mexico City, the coastal flair of Lima, and the leisurely warmth of Buenos Aires into a distinctly Montreal dining experience. The kitchen draws on Latin American street food, comfort cooking, and fine-dining technique in equal measure: Peruvian ceviches, Argentinian grill culture, Mexican birria and mole, and Japanese-Peruvian Nikkei influences all find their way onto a menu delivered with warmth and precision. La Fiesta at $65per person is Sabrosa’s entry-level group sharing menu — a family-style selection of the kitchen’s best dishes, designed for a convivial gathering, a small celebration, or a group looking to cover a lot of Latin American ground in a single sitting. The cocktail list, anchored by an extensive selection of vinos, tequila, and mezcal, makes the case for staying at the table well past the last course.

We are going to eat here again if we have the chance! The food was excellent. If you like spicy ask for the homemade hot sauce! The family that owns the restaurant is there and the whole experience was great. We loved the food and brought leftovers back to our hotel fridge that we ate for breakfast the next morning and it was great till the last bite. They have a speakeasy downstairs we are going to try if we can fit it in! Loved it. If you are on the fence just go because you will love it. Authentic latin food.

My husband and I had a great experience! The food was delicious and the ambience was great. We were there on a quieter week night, so the noise level was perfect. While the menu is not extensive, everything we had (caesar salad, beef tartare, chicken sliders, fries) was amazing. Would definitely go back!

Quartier des Spectacles

Bloom Sushi in the Quartier des Spectacles brings a fully plant-based approach to Japanese sushi — one that has built a loyal following in Montreal through menus that prove vegan sushi is not a compromise but a distinct and considered proposition in its own right. The omakase at $44per person covers soup, three gyoza, 12 classic sushi pieces selected by the chef, and the dessert of the moment — an entry point that works for curious newcomers and regulars alike. The Omakase Deluxe at $54 per person steps it up with soup, a starter choice of three gyoza or vegan salmon sashimi, 12 special sushi pieces chosen by the chef, and dessert. Both formats put the kitchen’s selection entirely in the chef’s hands, allowing the menu to reflect the season and the day’s best offerings. For plant-based omakase that takes the format seriously and keeps the price genuinely accessible, Bloom Sushi is one of the more interesting dining propositions in the Quartier.

We are from Saskatoon, SK and have travelled a lot in our lives. We also ever been to many sushi restaurants. Bloom Sushi was the best sushi we have ever had! The experience, our server and the ambiance couldn’t be any more perfect. We also had our toddler 2 and halfyear old with us, which we were nervous to bring her, but they were very accommodating. If you’re in Montreal, this is a MUST! Make sure you add this to your list. You won’t regret it!
