What the experts say:

“When B.C.’s liquor laws changed in 2014 to finally allow bars and restaurants to offer happy hour, the people rejoiced. Now Vancouver has plenty of options: from snacks like freshly-shucked oysters and Korean-inspired nachos to drinks including herbaceous Italian cocktails and fruity sangria pitchers.“ — Sara Harowitz is a journalist and consultant based in Vancouver. Coal Harbour

From the acclaimed Hawksworth Group, Nightingale occupies the exquisitely restored former University Club building in Coal Harbour — soaring ceilings, original fireplace, copper accents, and marble counters designed by Studio Munge. The daily happy hour, from 3 pm to 5 pm, draws a loyal after-work crowd into a room that rewards the visit: Neapolitan-style wood-fired pizzas perfected over a year of development, seasonal salads, pastas, crudo, and shareable proteins built around locally sourced BC produce — including vegetables from farms that grow almost exclusively for the restaurant. The sommelier who won Vancouver Magazine’s Sommelier of the Year 2025 curates the wine list; the cocktail programme is equally well considered. For happy hour in Coal Harbour that doubles as one of the city’s best restaurants, look no further than Nightingale.

West End

Joe Fortes has been an institution on the West End since 1985 — named for Vancouver’s legendary first lifeguard and shaped by the larger-than-life character that name implies. The happy hour, from 3 pm to 5 pm Monday to Friday, is among the best-value oyster deals in the city: freshly shucked bivalves at $3 each, alongside Brussels sprouts at $8, truffle fries at $10, and a range of discounted spirits, wines, and beers. The rooftop garden patio — with its living green wall, outdoor fireplace, and bustling horseshoe bar — is the setting that regulars come for specifically. The broader menu runs to a legendary three-tiered seafood tower loaded with lobster, crab, oysters, and chilled prawns, alongside miso-marinated sablefish and over 50 types of fresh fish from Pacific Northwest suppliers. Live piano most evenings. For a Vancouver happy hour with genuine institution status and the city’s most desirable rooftop garden behind it, Joe Fortes remains the gold standard.

Yaletown

MICHELIN Guide-recommended Social Corner Yaletown runs a twice-daily happy hour that covers both the afternoon wind-down crowd and the late-night set who discover the bar at its most convivial. The afternoon programme runs daily from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm with cocktails, sangria, wine, and shareable tapas at reduced prices; a late-night happy hour follows Sunday through Thursday from 9 pm to close, Friday and Saturday from 10 pm. The Per Se Hospitality Group concept blends Italian and Spanish culinary tradition into a lively, design-forward room in the heart of Yaletown: 72-hour fermented wood-fired pizzas, patatas bravas, paella, the Ciclo espresso martini built with Tia Maria, Licor 43, and a Grand Marnier wash, and a Negroni made exclusively at this location with Roku gin and house-blended sweet vermouth. The Old Fashioned with brown butter-washed bourbon is worth ordering immediately. One of Yaletown’s most reliably excellent all-day dining destinations.

Earls Test Kitchen is where the brand experiments, evolves, and refines — and that forward-leaning energy translates directly into one of the best happy hours in downtown Vancouver. The programme runs daily from 3 pm to 6 pm and again from 9 pm to close, with 50% off the full cocktail menu (including the Picante margarita, Nitro espresso martini, Aperol spritz, and prosecco punch) plus $3 off wines by the glass and select draft deals. Located near the Vancouver Art Gallery, the newly renovated space is lush with greenery and flexes its globally inspired menu: seafood tower, sushi and raw bar, plant-based options, and weekend brunch happy hour. The flexibility that makes Test Kitchen the brand’s proving ground for new menu concepts makes it a reliable destination for those who want a half-price cocktail and something genuinely interesting to eat alongside it.

Burnaby

Tap & Barrel Brentwood boasts an impressive three level space and a retractable-roof rooftop patio. The happy hour covers the full Tap & Barrel comfort-food playbook at reduced prices, anchored by the brand’s craft beer programme and a cocktail and wine list built around local BC producers. The retractable roof means patio season isn’t weather-dependent — a significant advantage in Burnaby. Signature happy hour bites follow the brand’s West Coast ethos: New England-style chowder, crispy Humboldt squid, fresh pasta, and crowd-favourite mains paired with BC craft taps and rotational cocktails. The ground floor lounge is buzzy and screen-lined; the dining room is more relaxed and booth-lined; the rooftop looks out over the Brentwood skyline toward the mountains. Daily happy hour and weekend brunch make it as suited to a weekday wind-down as a Saturday afternoon with the whole group. The most versatile happy hour venue in Burnaby.

MICHELIN Guide-recommended Acquafarina began life as a planned pizzeria (the wood-burning ovens remain the centrepiece of the room) and pivoted into a fine dining Italian restaurant without losing the playfulness that makes it work. The happy hour runs daily from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, opening with artisanal focaccia at $4 and charcoal-grilled halal lamb chops with black lime kefir at $10 — a combination that sets the tone for everything that follows. The broader menu spans Hokkaido scallops with pink peppercorn, hamachi with limoncello foam, hand-rolled pastas, and wood-fired pizza alongside Wagyu beef carpaccio with truffled egg yolk. The copper bar and soaring ceilings of a former Bank of Montreal building create a setting that few Vancouver restaurants match for sheer atmosphere.

Yaletown

The smell from Homer Street Cafe & Bar’s fire engine-red rotisserie is enough to reroute an entire evening — and the MICHELIN-recommended Yaletown restaurant’s happy hour, daily from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, gives every reason to stop in before dinner. The programme is generously stocked: freshly shucked local oysters at market price (minimum six), house rolls with schmaltz and cultured butter at $8, pimento cheese dip with Ritz crackers at $9, steak tartare with tater tots at $19, and a crispy chicken plate with dill pickle brine and ranch at $22 — all alongside well spirits highballs at $5, Wishbone Lager at $6, draught beers at $7, and house wines by the glass at $7. The cocktail list includes a golden sidecar, negroni, elderflower aviation, spicy orange margarita, and a rotating feature slushie, each $2 off during happy hour. The cosy booths under antique tiling and an open-concept chef’s bar make the room one of Yaletown’s most characterful. Leashed dogs are welcome on the street-level patio.

Commercial Drive

There is an art to aperitivo done properly, and Caffè La Tana on Commercial Drive — from the team behind Savio Volpe and Pepino’s — has mastered it. The daily aperitivo programme runs from 3 pm to 5 pm in a space that earns its neighbourhood instantly: a black-and-white checkerboard floor, woodland wallpaper, soft green palette, and marble counters that evoke the authentic Italian alimentari tradition the café was built to honour. The drinks are precise and Italian-rooted: the Banda Spaghett (Aperol, lemon, Italian pilsner, orange) at $9, a Venetian G&T with Tanqueray and Nardini Mezzo e Mezzo at $9, and a selection of amari and vermouth served on the rocks. Aperitivo bites include Negroni-glazed pork belly, scallop and prawn ‘in carrozza’, squash arancini, and a burrata with grape conserva that is exactly as good as it sounds. Pasta is made fresh in-house daily. For an aperitivo hour that feels like a trip to Italy, La Tana is unmatched.

Coal Harbour

The Sequel is the downtown sibling of The Story Cafe in Richmond — and it carries the family resemblance well. Set in the elegant Cardero Building in Coal Harbour with floor-to-ceiling windows and lush greenery throughout, the restaurant blends modern-vintage jazz atmosphere with casual fine dining. The happy hour headline is simple but compelling: half-price bottles of wine every Tuesday and Wednesday — an unforced invitation to explore a thoughtfully curated list at genuinely good value. The broader menu runs to lobster scramble crêpes, duck confit hash, beef Wellington, BC honey mussel and wild salmon seafood linguine, and a Titanic hollandaise that is worth ordering on reputation alone. Live music every Friday and Saturday from 7:30 pm brings a jazz soundtrack that elevates an already warm room. Two private dining spaces make it equally suited to intimate dinners and large gatherings. A proper Coal Harbour local.

Mount Pleasant

Miso Taco on Cambie Street is one of the more joyful dining concepts in Vancouver — a Japanese-Mexican fusion restaurant opened by chef-owner Diego Delgado, whose Mexican culinary roots and love of Japanese culture produced a menu that commits fully to both traditions without hedging. The anime-inspired décor (Sailor Moon on the screens, sake bottles as light fixtures, original murals throughout) sets the tone; the food lives up to it. Happy hour brings reduced pricing on a cocktail programme that includes the Matcha martini, Miso margarita, Coco Verde, and Dirty Horchata, alongside the kitchen’s full menu of birria tacos paired with Indomie ramen, kimchi nacho fries, churro mochi, and the sizzling cheesy mushroom plate that regulars order without looking at the menu. Vancouver Foodster’s Taco Challenge judges have already recognised the kitchen’s output. A genuinely fun happy hour for anyone who wants something different.

Named Canada’s Best New Bar 2025, ranked 7th best bar in Canada, and listed on North America’s 50 Best Bars — Prophecy, in the basement of the Rosewood Hotel Georgia, is the most decorated cocktail bar in Vancouver. The daily cocktail Hour from 4 pm to 6 pm offers handcrafted martinis, signature cocktails, and curated wines and champagne at reduced prices — a chance to experience a genuinely world-class programme without the full evening spend. Beverage director Jeff Savage’s menu reads like a piece of literature: drinks are colour-coded by mood (refreshing, herbaceous, lush, spirituous), organised into chapters referencing writers, poets, and artists, and accompanied by flavour maps. The Wabi Sabi martini (redistilled matcha gin, hinoki, aromatized wine) and Big Iron (Angel’s Envy bourbon, black tea, strawberry, ginger) are among the signatures. The basement space — dark, moody, with digital art on the walls and live music on weekend evenings — is unlike anything else in the city.
