Food & Film returns to LULU at the Hammer Museum on November 7 with a special 35mm screening of Babette's Feast. Director Gabriel Axel's beloved 1987 film is one of cinema's great celebrations of food and generosity. Set in a small Danish village, it tells the story of Babette, a French refugee who prepares an extraordinary feast for a community accustomed to a life of simplicity and restraint. What begins as a dinner becomes something much more: a reminder of the pleasure of a good meal, the joy of giving, and the remarkable way food can bring people together. We’re pleased to present this Academy Award-winning classic of the culinary screen to mark the fifth anniversary of Lulu at the Hammer Museum. For the evening, LULU will offer a special seasonal prix fixe menu inspired by the film. Co-presented with the UCLA Film & Television Archive and renowned chef, activist, and cinephile Alice Waters, the series explores the intersections of culinary and moving image arts and how food, like art, can help build more sustainable and thriving communities together. Ticketing: Archive screenings at the Hammer Museum are free, with no advance reservations. Seats are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis when tickets are picked up at the box office, which opens one hour before the screening. Guests dining at LULU before the film are encouraged to reserve before 6:15 PM to allow time to pick up tickets beginning at 6:30 PM for the 7:30 PM screening. Please note that a LULU reservation does not guarantee theater seating.
