A beloved neighborhood gem in the heart of Greenwich Village. French-American bistro Camaje (pronounced kuh-mahj—ask the staff for the story behind the name) was established in 1997 by chef-owner Abigail Hitchcock. Cozy and intimate yet casual, the restaurant offers a local, seasonal menu at affordable prices. Relax at a table, sip at the bar, and take in the views of the historic townhouses of the Village among the people who live in the neighborhood.

Chef Abigail's favorites include appetizers like socca—a chickpea pizza served with a red pepper coulis—and entrees like tender hanger steak, house-smoked duck sandwich, and the wildly popular dessert Banoffee Pie. Camaje also offers hands-on cooking classes and blindfolded Dinners in the Dark, as well as private and corporate events for up to 25 people.

Excellent little restaurant serving authentic and affordable French cuisine. The duck is superb as are the appetizers. The restaurant has a really good happy hour with a lot of options and affordable wines. The service is fantastic as the waiters and owner make you feel comfortable and cater to your every need. I'd highly recommend for an intimate setting (this is not a lively place so know that before you go).

Very good standard French bistro. The duck fat popcorn and crab dip are a nice warm-up while waiting for main course. The duck breast with potatoes were good, I would have preferred with a little sweeter sauce - but the star of the night for us was the Lamb Tagine over cous cous. Next trip we want to try the crepes.

We had reservations and waited for 15 minutes before being seated. We sat for another 15 minutes, and never even received water. Unfortunately there was only one worker who was waiter, bus boy, host, and bartender. We eventually left and went to another restaurant.

It was the worst service I had at a restaurant to date. Took them 40 minutes to come back and tell me that they didn't have any more lamb which I had ordered, then about 45 min later I asked where our food was and the guys said "10 seconds. Coming out now" and of course it took another 15 more minutes. Would not recommend this place

I've loved Camaje since it opened. The food is consistently good to excellent, and the staff (and chef) are friendly and low-key. It's a comfortable, fairly quiet place, a Village gem. My only problem with our recent dinner was that the entrees took over an hour to be prepared, and the restaurant wasn't busy. That said, it is quite a relaxed atmosphere, and I feel certain that if we'd asked for our food to be prepared quicker, they would have gladly complied. Again, love Camaje.

My friend and I enjoyed dining at this small French bistro. The pate was excellent, I had the sea bass and she had the hanger steak...both very tasty. The flourless cake was good but the portion was so small....this is my only complaint. Definitely deserves a return visit.
