1861 was the defining year in Broome's history. A new species, the pearl oyster Pinctada maxima was discovered in Roebuck Bay and turned out to be the largest pearl shell in the world. The size of the shell was huge in comparison to any other shell available and caused a sensation in European and American markets. The average size of the 'pinctada shell' was six to twelve inches across.

    Bali Hai went above and beyond. I only made the booking the morning of the event for 21 people. 24 people turned up and they accommodated everyone. For 24 people we were able to order what we wanted individually. Most restaurants would just offer a set menu to make it easier for them. But Bali Hai was able to produce beautiful food for everyone and waiting time wasn’t that long. This restaurant is highly recommended.

    We were visiting for a short time and were amazed how good the food was. We didn’t do BBQ but it looked amazing. We did have mandu, japchae, and a seafood pancake. They were all delicious. We ate outside and it was very comfortable.
