It was very nostalgic to dine at French Gourmet just before they close their doors on Jan 11th. San Diego is losing a great institution. While a frequent customer in the 1980’s and 1990’s, it’s been at least a decade since I had been there, and was so happy to see really nothing had changed. Good food (the service and onion soup were a 10, the salad Niscoise scored a little lower but still very good, and the ambiance was relaxed. When we arrived for an early lunch the intimate space was empty, but by the time we left it was packed with a line out the door. For the entire time, we were never rushed. So sad to see it go, but congratulations on an outstanding history. Adieu à un merveilleux café!

Undeniably the best French food in the San Diego area. Excellent ambiance, preparation, flavor, and service. Prices are very reasonable and portions are larger than I have experienced at most French restaurants around the USA. It is a shame we just discovered this gem as they are closing 1/11/2026 due to retirement?

Very loud table of teenagers when we first arrived. After they left everything was great. Always a delicious day at The French Gourmet! we’ve been coming here for 35 years and will really miss them. STOP THE TOWER!!!!!

Eat here as often as you can, because it will be gone within a month. This is one of few restaurants in San Diego that still prepares classical food. (Another: Jack & Giulio's in Old Town).

This has been our most favorite restaurant for years. The wonderful food, the friendly ambiance, the pleasant service, all top notch. We've had so many delicious meals and so many wonderful experiences here, it feels like home. Whenever out-of-town guests have visited us, we've always taken them there. We've never been disappointed. We are very grateful that the owner is going to be able to retire, but so sad to know the French Gourmet will be closing soon. Love the take out baked goods from here and have had catering success as well - bu never dined at The French Gourmet. It has a small dining room and patio. Our server was prompt, courteous and attentive. We enjoyed brunch- my steak and eggs were perfectly prepared. Had bottomless mimosas and the bread is delicious - worth the trip just for the bread alone. Do go.

The noise level that I specified was largely because of a single party, and may not reflect the usual vibe of this restaurant. Good food, very generous service. The escargots were much smaller than what I’m used to, but I’m otherwise satisfied.
