VERY high quality food at this lovely, cozy-feeling cafe out in the country. Everything was beautifully flavorful, fresh, perfectly seasoned. Our group split the roasted oysters appetizer, and the house-made pastrami appetizer, both of which were amazing. My companions both ordered pasta dishes. I tried to order the special pasta (squash bucatini) but it was sold out. The shrimp and grits I pivoted to were amazing, though, so no regrets! One thing I was a little surprised by was the number of menu items that were sold out by the time we ordered. We had a 6:00 p.m. reservation, so I wouldn't have expected so many things to sell out so early in the evening. That said, the restaurant was packed, with parties who had gotten there even earlier than us, so I gather the dinner hour skews a bit early in rural Vermont. Ambiance and service were lovely. Prices were in line with what I'd expect at a higher end, farm-to-table venue. I would definitely dine here again!

We sat for 31 minutes before receiving water. When our server came she rushed us through dinner. 25 minutes from ordering to the bill. Disappointing service, great food.

Thank you for your feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed the food, though we take your concerns regarding service seriously. We would note that your table ordered a single course of two house-made pasta entrées, prepared fresh daily and cooked in just a few minutes. With only one course ordered, the overall length of the meal is naturally more limited. That said, we appreciate your comments and will use them as an opportunity to continue growing and improving as a team.

Fine Dining Prices. Questionable Culinary Decisions. I arrived at Starry Night Café with high expectations and an appetite. I left with neither expectations nor a full stomach. The restaurant is small, with lighting so dim I wasn't sure whether we were having a romantic dinner or attending a séance. We started with roasted new potatoes and buttermilk dill ranch. The potatoes were fine, doing the bare minimum expected of a potato. The ranch was so watery I wasn't sure whether to dip them or request a straw. I'd planned on ordering the Spinach Mafaldine advertised online, but it was missing from our menu. Instead, I chose the wood-grilled halibut. The fish was unremarkable. The mushrooms were apparently playing hide-and-seek, while the beets tasted like freshly excavated Vermont soil. Then came the butternut squash purée. An absolute culinary tragedy. Ruining something as naturally delicious as seasonal squash takes a special kind of talent, and someone in that kitchen clearly possesses it. I wondered whether the chef had culinary training or simply watched three episodes of Hell's Kitchen and decided to follow their dreams. After three bites, I surrendered. My girlfriend finished the dish, largely because she enjoys lentils and apparently has a higher tolerance for culinary experimentation. She ordered the Cacio e Pepe, which she found acceptable. I thought the pasta was so aggressively al dente it bordered on a dental endurance test. At these prices, creativity should elevate ingredients, not bury them beneath questionable flavors and textures. The grand finale? Returning home from an expensive dinner and eating trail mix because I was still hungry. Ambitious pricing and fancy descriptions mean little when the food fails to deliver. The most satisfying part of dinner was leaving.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry your experience didn’t meet your expectations. At Starry Night, we take pride in our seasonal menu and the thought and care our kitchen puts into each dish. We understand that not every preparation will appeal to every palate, though we stand behind our culinary approach. We take hospitality seriously and welcome constructive feedback. While we’re disappointed your concerns weren’t shared with us during your visit, we will consider your comments as we continue to evaluate our approach and grow as a team. We’re committed to providing a thoughtful dining experience and appreciate the opportunity to reflect on where we can improve. Thank you for giving Starry Night a try.

Honestly, one of the best meals I’ve eaten, as well as wonderful service and ambience. It’s a bit pricy, but definitely worth it for a special occasion or splurge.

We were looking forward to a high-end dining experience but what we had was a night with the Griswolds. Apparently Starry Night is a destination for well-to-do, young families who decide to forgo a babysitter (or remove their trucker hats). Two wailing infants and a misbehaving toddler in an intimate dining setting were barely acknowledged by their parents or by front-of-house management. We declined dessert because of the noise and hubbub and told the server as such who replied, "Yeah, I hear ya." This was more of a Kids Eat Free night at Appleby's instead of an elevated evening of exceptional food and service we were expecting. We are locals and this was our first and last visit.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your evening fell short of the experience you were hoping for. We understand how important the overall atmosphere is to an enjoyable dining experience, and we regret that the noise and our response to your concerns detracted from your visit. We also appreciate your feedback regarding your interaction with our team. Regardless of the circumstances, we want every guest to feel heard and cared for, and we’re sorry that this wasn’t reflected in your experience. We take your comments seriously and will use them as an opportunity to reflect on how we can better navigate these situations while ensuring all of our guests feel welcome. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention.

Food was amazing!!! Place was soo cute & assuming from the outside. Only complaint is that hostess need to balance the restaurant. Only 1 table had guests & they sat us RIGHT next to them. Then the next guest was sat right next to us & so on. Ruined the ambiance and I hope this way of seating was just a 1 off.

Thank you so much for the kind words about our food and atmosphere! We’re glad you enjoyed your meal. We also appreciate your feedback regarding the seating arrangement. On fully booked evenings, seating can be a bit of a puzzle as we balance current guests with walk-ins, upcoming reservations and the next seating. We have systems in place to help maintain a comfortable atmosphere, but we recognize that sometimes the flow of the evening doesn’t feel quite right. We’re always looking for ways to improve, and your feedback is a helpful reminder of how much ambiance matters to the overall experience. Thank you again for visiting, and we hope to welcome you back soon!

We went to Stary night for our anniversary after hearing great things. The water selection, wine and appetizer were fine, but the main was disappointing. Our server never asked how it was, and when we asked for a box to take it home, there was no offer of dessert or follow-up. We left feeling overlooked.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your main course didn’t quite hit the mark. Our cheesesteak is one of our most popular menu items and consistently receives great feedback, so it’s not a dish we often hear concerns about, though we understand that everyone has different preferences and we strive to have something for everyone on our menu. We also appreciate your comments regarding service, as we want our guests to feel well cared for throughout their entire visit. We are always looking for ways to grow as a team and the information you've provided will help with that. Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope you’ll consider joining us again in the future.

Everything about our dinner was outstanding. Ambiance was lovely without being pretentious. Servers were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Martini was spot on. Focaccia bread and herb butter were so yummy we ordered seconds. Salad was very good. Grilled vegetables were out of this world. Steak tartare was well presented. And German chocolate tart was delicious. The best meal we’ve had in a very long time. Chef is creative with his choice of flavors, and it is truly and experience for your tastebuds. Only wish we lived close by to come here as regulars! A true gem of a culinary experience.
