This was not a great evening as previous visits to South. The cornbread was so cold that the butter had not melted. I don't mind sitting at the counter but it took an entire hour to get our dinner. Typically when you're at the counter they provide sample items but not this time. My daughter ordered barbecue ribs as stated on the menu and she was give smothered ribs with brown gravy. My mashed potatoes were cold. I would not continue with dessert. I was very disappointed this time around. Won't be back for a while.
In my humble opinion, here are a few things that were very noticeable to my friend and I:
1. I ordered a martini at the bar while waiting for out table. The bartender used her fingers to pick up the olives to put them on the toothpick before placing them in my drink. I immediately stopped her and requested "No Olives", as that was a turn-off.
2. There seemed to be only two servers in the dining area on a busy Sunday when there was a sold out performance. Our waiter was very thorough in handling his number of tables (which included ours). However, I noticed that frustration on some diners who were being waited on by another waiter. One of the other customers actually got up and spoke with the manager three times. I felt so bad for the customers, I asked our waiter if he could help them out. This situation could have been handled more efficiently.
3. A party of 11 showed up (found out later that they did not have a reservation), there were some issues trying to arrange two round tables (unsuccessfully) to fit the party. We insisted a few times to switch our 2-seat table so that they can add it to the available 8-seat table immediately next to us to accommodate the larger group. After a few attempts, we were finally taken up on our offer. This situation could have been handled more efficiently.
4. My friend and I both ordered the Catfish dinner. I substituted my collard greens for mashed potatoes and green beans. The mashed potatoes were less than lukewarm. However tasty the green beans were, the tips were not cut off. I dine out often, and never had that experience before, so I spent the better part of my meal cutting the tips off.
5. There were 2 - 3 items on the menu which were not available.
I am NOT a secret shopper, but I hope my humble opinion is not misconstrued as anything other than constructive criticism to assist in steps for improvement. I would try this restaurant a second time, before recommending it to a friend. Hopeful for a better experience!
Food delicious very accommodating place. Only con drink service very very slow. The place is two big and packed for 3 bar tenders
The atmosphere was nice and the food was good.
It was a Valentine’s Day dinner reservation for 9:45 PM. It was a prize fixe menu with the majority of the menu on the seafood side not leaving a person who doesn’t eat seafood with much to choose. They had run out of several entrees and each table had an option to get a large order of iron skillet cornbread. About five minutes after we ordered the cornbread a person I assume from the kitchen came out to tell us that we could have cornbread but we would have to wait 25 minutes before it was ready. I declined but they offered us some presliced cornbread which was fine but unfortunately it came to the table lukewarm. Our waiter returned finally to tell us about the cornbread situation but we already received the cold cornbread. We have been to South before and we had an excellent dinner an outstanding service. I hope this was just a fluke occurrence but it was not a very good evening experience.
I Invited a couple of friends for Valentine's day to join my wife and I the (service) no one was pleased with how long we waited for our food our drinks it was not a good experience I had to apologize to them several times that it was very expensive and we did not get the quality of the food that we deserve all I know is that they said they would never ever do another Valentine's Day there or eat there again only go for the show very very disappointing to have an evening amongst friends on a special day for our wives and it end up the way that it did I do want to say that the waitress apologized and tried to do the best that she could we do not blame her for what was going on
We'll be back! The atmosphere was impressive as well as the good and staff!
Great service with Guy. Attentive and pleasant. Manager that touched the table and hostess were pleasant as well. Live Jazz music in next room so kinda loud but worth it.
My husband and I went for their $35 three course special thinking it was a great deal. But honestly that food was so bland. So surprised for a southern cooking restaurant! Required a ton of salt and pepper for each course. We even contemplated putting some salt on the dessert. Luckily the ice cream and cookie were sweet enough.
The entertainment was good, however, we waited over an hour for our food to come out... about 10:20 PM. There were less folks in the restaurant since it was at the end of the night, after 9 PM. Everyone whose orders were taken after us received their food before us. It was RIDICULOUS!
I always love this place!
One of the most amazing restaurants in the city! Love their food!
Everything we ordered the restaurant ran out of and we are vegan not a wide selection
By far the best southern soul food I've had in a while. The shrimp and grits were SO fluffy, the fried chicken was perfectly breaded, and the pan seared salmon was expertly seasoned. The ambiance perfectly emulated a scene right out of N.O.L.A. - you'd almost forget you're in the heart of Philly. The bar was a little slow but the place was pretty crowded and everything else made up for it.
Having just moved from Savannah to Philadelphia, I was excited for some low country cooking. The ambiance was spot on for coastal SC/GA. The Jazz was good. The food was just ok. I got the shrimp and grits. The shrimp was seasoned and cooked well but the entire meal was just shrimp placed on top of uninspired grits. There was no gravy or sauce to tie the meal together. I was a little disappointed. My wife ordered the short ribs and was very happy. She couldn’t stop talking about how good the greens were.
Everything was amazing. Drinks took a little while but our waiter was fantastic.
Absolutely loved it! Food was delicious and I loved their take in the Long Island iced tea!
Clown show for Service! I read recent reviews over past 2 months before writing this (made reservation way earlier when we bought our show tix), and it seems all the bad reviews for this place are related to this...looks like a trend starting up, which is too bad. I know they have some excellent servers...only because they were handling the table next to us and providing what right looks like, so as with reviews...looks like the mediocrity is luck of the draw for the patrons. Maybe restaurant is not handling influx of customers well who are doing the same thing we and our friends were, eating there based on proximity to Met, so not enough bar staff. Layout and decor pretty cool and fit the theme they are going for, so good marks there. Food was good for the price. If not for the system of handhelds that allows the staff to drop order immediately as made with the kitchen, as well as pay the check, would have left without paying period, and would have been justified. Show time 7PM, so made 5PM reservations. Arrived 5:10, seated right away, only 4 tables in the place at that point in time. Server didn't greet and take drink orders until 5:30. 5:40, comes back to table...no drinks yet, but gets our order for starters and dinner. Asks for specials, told there are none, which became hilarious because I hear the specials being given to the table next to us. Seeing how this is all going, I let her know we need to be gone by 6:30 for the show, wanting to head off further issues and give her a chance to "save the table" Drinks delivered, missing one due to be out of sangria (at beginning the night?) Replacement another 15 min...and when queried, "another person took it". And then brought out duplicates of our 2nd drink order as we were leaving at 6:30, and spills full beer on my herself, my wife, and table next to us. Did find out they gave the young lady who jacket got trashed a card offering to pay for dry clean. Never had manager stop by for us
Service was slow and we were there when service began. They did not serve me what was advertised on the menu. The glass I was served had lipstick on it. The Caesar Salad, while beautifully plated, was under seasoned and the fried green tomato tasteless. The restaurant is super well decorated. I hope they were just having a bad night.
Everything was superb! The atmosphere, hostesses, bartenders, waitresses down to the food and drinks (even the water lol)!
I already told some friends to make reservations. I also recommended brunch to some relatives that are not familiar with all the possibilities in the city.
I had a great time the food was great and the concert was excellent!!!! I will be back again.
Great experience. This was my colleagues' first time. They both plan to bring their mothers to the restaurant. Good enough for Mom. Wow!
Came here for the first time for my husband’s birthday. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. The waiter was excellent gave us a lot of great recommendations for food and drinks and all were great! We will definitely be back to try out some other stuff on the menu. Great place with great people and great food! We even met a couple that was also having dinner next to us and ended up exchanging numbers at the end of the night. We will definitely be back, soon!
Service was phenomenal
Food was delicious
And my server Guy was exquisite
Definitely would recommend this restaurant
Can't wait to go back.
Delicious food and amazing ambiance! The staff was very friendly and I would go back again.
I was looking forward to experiencing South due to their rating on Google. However even with a 9 pm reservation, my husband and I didn't get seated for almost 45 minutes. Even with the delay of being seated, the staff was professional and working hard to get everyone seated. My biggest issue is the food. We both ordered the same dish...buttermilk fried chicken, mashed potatoes, broccoli and a side of mac n cheese. We didn't eat everything so we took some home with us. The next afternoon, when I cut one of chicken breast up for our son, it was not cooked thoroughly at all...it was still pink! I care nothing about the breading if the chicken is not cooked properly. I just threw the chicken away at that point. I wouldn't try this place again.
Evan, our server, was fantastic - knowledgeable, charismatic and attentive. As always, the food was outstanding.
The service was very poor, we waited over 30 min for our first drink order- white wine served warm, specialty drink served with no ice- disappointed- not that busy on a Tuesday night. Ordered apps for the table, portions were too small for 9 ppl, server offered no help to accommodate us- our first time there. The restaurant is beautiful/ could really be a great place- clearly some issues. Dinners were room temp.
The food is excellent! I have been to South twice now and everything I ate has exceeded my expectations. The cornbread is a MUST!
Always a good time at South, just slightly disappointed the reservation I made for brunch was not the Jazz brunch. There wasn’t anything that mentioned I had to specify while making the reservation. None the less, we’ll be back.
Went to South for brunch and was very excited given all the positive reviews I’d read but they must have been having an off day. While the food was good, it wasn’t amazing and the service was very slow. We went at 11am so it wasn’t super busy but we ended up waiting a while for service and the waitress kept forgetting to bring things. My friend also never got a side dish he ordered but hey at least we weren’t charged for it. I’ll try again for the jazz show and see how that goes.
Had a great time! The food was delicious. Can’t wait to go back!!
This was Me and My Husband first time here. We was on a double date with friends and we had a nice time. The food was so good and We will back. The Jazz group was awesome the music was so relaxing. What crazy about this is I looked over the Menu and didn't see anything that I like or can eat but when they brought the
and I did find something to eat . And this was our second choice because the other Restaurant was crowded and no seats. My Friend Husband suggest the Restaurant SOUTH. What a great choice We was so happy. From the Hostess desk to the Jazz Room everyone was so nice. YES Me and My Husband missed out all this year's but I tell you We won't be missing out any more.!!!!!!😊😊 Wow and it's close to home...
It was 15 minutes before water was poured. We ordered cocktails. The appetizers were served, the dinner was served, THEN the cocktails were served. And it wasn't that busy. We assumed this was a bartender issue, and not our particular waitstaff. The food was wonderful and the ambiance is terrific. Next time, we hope to stay for some music....
My daughter and I really enjoyed the restaurant! It worked very well with our event that we were attending, Dancing With The Stars! I cannot wait to bring my partner!
The service was really great. Food was very tasty. And the ambiance was absolutely perfect. I can’t wait to come back in the summer or try the jazz cafe. Experience exceeded my expectations.
Me & my wife had a wonderful day & the food was delicious & it was served with care. The service was right on time. The atmosphere was wonderful. It is a very nice cozy place to just kick back. We will be back soon to take in the Jazz section.
We visited during restaurant week and the menu was awesome it was hard to decide. The bbq short ride was delicious. The dessert sampler was also a great way to get a bite of 3 different desserts!
I had an amazing time for my first experience at South. Since it was our first time, they moved us from the counter to a table and they were very very kind to us. Our server was very knowledgeable and nice. The food was amazing!
