Amazing food and service. Terrace looked beautiful
Outstanding food with outstanding service. Will return.
Although the restaurant was not close to full, we were seated by the door where a wedding was taking place and guests lingered. We requested a different table but the host would not accommodate. The waitress was also nowhere to be found most of the evening. We live in the neighborhood and have enjoyed the restaurant more than a few times, but after this experience doubt we’ll return. Too loud and uncomfortable. Very expensive for unpleasant dining.
Amazing food, excellent service, beautiful atmosphere.
Delicious food. Great service. A little over priced, but I would definitely come again.
Great customer service!
FOOD WAS NOT AS GREAT AS I'VE PREVIOUSLY HAD. OTHERWISE, IT WAS A NICE -- NOT GREAT -- EXPERIENCE. HAD REMEMBERED IT BEING WONDERFUL, WOULDN'T GO THERE NOW, BUT IT WAS OK.
Best fine dining Chinese cuisine in Chicago
The chef and the manager took special care of our party. We had a fabulous experience with food that way above average. This is our favorite restaurant in town
Always a fabulous experience. Delicious food with exquisite service.
The Peking duck, lobster and chicken dumplings, and the Chinese vegetables were great. The duck and foie gras dumplings, the crab dumplings, and the pancakes for the Peking duck were below average. The moppu tofu was fine but not as good as the one served at Sze Wan Cuisine.
The quality of the food and the attentive staff made it an remarkably dinning experience. This was my second time dinning with Shanghai Terrace and will continue the tradition while I'm visiting Chicago.
A bit pricier than average Chinese restaurant, but the food is great and the service is spectacular. A real treat.
Good food good service! Recommend the cucumber "haze"
The service was impeccable. The food was not up to par. Our dim sum was cold and mushy. My son's entree was the only good dish. My husband and I both had fish. Mine was cold, my husband's was over cooked. Maybe it was just an off night but I would not recommend the restaurant.
Celebrated a wonderful birthday. Our party included a baby in a stroller. The staff could not have been nicer. The food was delicious.
Shanghai Terrace was excellent. My wife and I definitely enjoyed date night. We service was excellent and we were always being checked on by the servers and the food was delicious. We will have Shanghai Terrace in out rotation of restaurants we will return to.
Todo bien buen lugar
Nice time as always at the Penninsula Hotel. Dinner was nice, food was good as usual and service was superior. We had a nice time and will go back.
The service wat quite poor. The food was either very good or very bad. I had a very good app and a very bad main course.
Shanghai Terrace never disappoints. The cocktails, dim sum Platter and Peking duck with pancakes were excellent. The only thing that was uncomfortable was a table of 4 next to us speaking an Asian language and one of the women was having a wonderful time and talking very very loudly. Because she was speaking another language it was vary abrasive, and distracting from our conversation.
The service and quality of our meal were top notch. The Peking duck and lobster hot and sour soup are must-try dishes! We will be back.
The best Chinese food in Chicago. Impeccable service. Every time.
Wonderful food and service. Subtle tastes that melt on your mouth. One of the best restaurants in Chicago!
Fantastic food and service. The dim sum and Peking duck makes it a worthwhile visit!
Great food and service! I had an anniversary here with the fiancé. I will return again in the near future.
Simply amazing! Like being in Shanghai at a high end Shanghainese restaurant. Very well son! Incredible Peking Duck and service was outstanding
Attended Shanghai Terrace in February, did not get the experience the outdoor terrace due to it being off season.. I was greeted by the host who happens to be serving tables, doing coat check and about two other jobs. You would expect something different from a 5-star restaurant. The drinks were “meh” at best and price at a premium but quality was missing.. The food portion was just ok. In a prior review, someone mention that in the Kung Pao Chicken it was more chicken than your normal Kung Pao chicken. That was great but it was the only highlight. My date had scallops and wasn’t impressed either.. I’ve dine at 5 star restaurants often and was underwhelmed with this restaurant.. However the location and ambience were incredible good tourist restaurant It was a restaurant, I wanted to dine at and check off my list.. Sadly, it’s check off and will not be a repeat.
As a planned birthday celebration, this was a well thought out reservation. The food was just mediocre, temperature of food was not correct. Food to be served hot was luke-warm, separate rice dish and noodle dish were way below even a standard Chinese restaurant. No taste, had to ask for seasoning just to get some taste put into them. The halibut was also flavorless, put soy/ginger sauce on it for seasoning, which was a very hefty price to receive flavorless halibut. Our expectation based on ratings were high, our food experience receives a 2 rating. The service was friendly and our wait staff was good, which receives a 4 rating. I am extremely disappointed in this dinner. What was to be an outstanding dining experience due to ratings, this dinner was less than good. The host at the Lobby Bar, could use training on customer service and a positive attitude. Our evening started off with a very rude welcome from him. We were told from the staff of the bar on 7 we could sit at a table in the lobby bar for a glass of champagne before dinner since the bar was full and no tables available. The host in the Lobby Bar was anything but welcoming and a room full of open tables as we were told we would have to sit on the sofa. We expressed to him the hostess at the bar confirmed we could sit at a table (for 20 minutes) before our 7pm reservation at Shanghai Terrace. He huffed and puffed before finally seating us at a table. We were there maybe 15 minutes, upon leaving there was a room full of open tables still. WOW ~ we will not be back to experience such service.
Excellent service and food. Can’t wait to return!
First class food first class service and of course first class atmosphere!
Excellent with respect to service and food. The service is on par with what one expects from the Peninsula which is superb. From the valet, front desk staff, maitre’d, and wait staff, all are far better than the vast majority of local establishments. Worth a trip for a special occasion given the price point.
The food was excellent, service wasn’t, though it was quite busy and bustling when we were dining.
Pekking duck was amazing as always, but everything else was just average and not worth it for the price.
Chinese New Year!
Highly, highly recommend.. will be back soon!
Second time here. First was very good. This time however made the mistake of ordering the select menu for Chinese New Year and we were very disappointed, food was below average our lobster course should have sent back it was so bad. The dinner was way overpriced if we go back never would we repeat this mistake.
We did the Chinese New Year tasting menu. The optional wine pairing was really fun and the service was excellent. Very friendly service overall and the tasting menu was a pleasure.
Another great meal at my favourite 'special event' restaurant.
It was cold inside though - I've never noticed that before, but I guess those patio doors aren't so effective when it's -30f outside... make sure you wrap up if you're visiting during this crazy cold snap!
Be aware that the heat in the dining room is not sufficient on a relatively cold night. We are not talking about brutally cold temperatures outside but just cold. Several diners were wearing their coats in the dining room. Bundle up!
The dim sum was very good and a nice variety of textures and flavors. We followed this with the market fish which was Halibut with ginger and scallions. It also has baby bok choy. We ordered a side of Chinese vegetables which turned out to be more bok choy. It would have been helpful if our server would have told us this as we ended up with too much of the same thing. The fried rice was very good and completed the meal. All in all the food here is delicious but the service left something to be desired.
I have been to Shanghai Terrace several times, and it is usually excellent. But this night, the food and service were poor. It took forever for our entrees to come out, and when they did they were lukewarm and not particularly tasty. This is an expensive restaurant, and the food and service should be excellent given the prices they charge. I don’t know what happened — perhaps new management or just a bad night?
