About the restaurant

The year was 1943, and Jim and Alice Wimmer decided to take a big risk, buying a small existing roadside restaurant known for its char-broiled steaks. How fitting that in 2018, the restaurant's 75th anniversary year, the third generation of Wimmers, Amy Wimmer, takes the helm from her father Jeff and his wife Jane, bringing her own adventurous spirit to the Del-Bar, the same kind of spirit she so admired in her grandparents. Dining and libations on Capitol Square with an incredible view of the Capitol, Rare combines craft cocktails, in-house dry aged steaks and attentive service in an unabashedly old-school steak house setting. Madison's downtown steakhouse features specialty cuts dry aged in-house, like the Rib Cap and the Delmonico as well as offering more traditional cuts like our filet and our rib eye. Rare is also one of the only purveyors of A5 Wagyu in Madison.

First time at this restaurant. We were celebrating our daughter’s birthday. Rare did not disappoint. Amazing wine list and outstanding food! And the service was absolutely top-notch! Yes, it’s pricey, but you know that going into it, and we believe it’s absolutely worth it. Cannot wait to go back.

What a wonderful dining experience! The restaurant has a beautiful, elegant atmosphere with perfect mood lighting and soft music that sets the tone for a lovely evening. The spicy shrimp was definitely a crowd-pleaser, and the meats were cooked to perfection! The chicken dinner was beautifully presented, and the drinks were just as pretty as they were delicious. Our server was absolutely top-notch! Kind, knowledgeable, and attentive throughout the evening, with excellent recommendations that made our experience even more enjoyable. Truly outstanding service! To top off the evening, the beignets and crème brûlée were absolutely fantastic! From the beautiful ambiance to the delicious food, amazing drinks, and exceptional service, everything was wonderful. We had such a great time and can’t wait to go back! Highly recommend! ❤️

Exceptional service and food! Not a bad thing to say. Our server made incredible recommendations with our wine and dessert. The steaks were amazing, as was the bone marrow we started with. It’s really saying something when the mushroom and truffle risotto was the least touched dish on the table (incredible, but so was everything else!)

Very prompt service, food was excellent. We had Marsala sirloin tips and 7 Oz steak with baked potatoes. We had salad and broccoli cheese soup and ended with a surprise anniversary brownie icecream/ whip cream dessert, which was amazing!!!! Thanks to all the staff and the waitress for making our 10th Anniversary just perfect.

We had an amazing experience for our anniversary. Kiera G was our server and she was amazing. Best service we’ve had in a long time. Food was amazing & we appreciated the anniversary special dessert she offered. 10/10 amazing experience!
