Red Owl Tavern
The duck breast was excellent. The tiramasu brownie sundae is awesome!
Nice restaurant/bar for a drink and a bite to eat near Independence Hall. Menu has nice entrees and a great burger. Will keep it in mind for our next visit to this part of Philly!
Birthday dinner with family.
Had dinner with friends here the Saturday after Thanksgiving. One of the few places we could get a reservation. But we had eaten here before so we knew it would be good and it was. Service was great. The noise level was high but we were on the fist floor near the bar. Should of asked for a table up stairs. Great location and easy walk to the train.
We had the best waitress and everyone was so nice!! The chicken dinner I had was the best. I highly recommend this restaurant and the location is excellent!
we were there at 6:45 for thanksgiving. we had a nice, quiet booth upstairs. our server was very nice and the food came out quickly. we had a yummy turkey dinner and it was really well priced at $24.00
the only problem, and unfortunately, it left us with such a "bad taste in our mouths" was that while my friend was having her cappucino, at about 8:30, the server came over and said his manager said they were closing. i asked if she could just finish and they said no, she can finish it downstairs in the reception area. we were really turned off. i mean it was still early and who would imagine that we would be rushed out when our reservation was taken for 6:45.
I visited for Thanksgiving dinner and had a wonderful time. Delicious food and friendly staff! Would highly recommend to first-time visitors, like me, the BEST location in Old City.
We went here on Thanksgiving, because when I called I asked if they were offering their regular kids menu. When we arrived, it turns out they were not, and whomever I spoke with, either couldn't pay attention, or didn't bother to find out the right answer. The manager, still treated us very nicely, and bought us our meal. My kids are picky, but we were able to cobble together a few things that they like, and had a much more pleasant Thanksgiving than we could have otherwise, given the circumstances. My wife and I really enjoyed our food, and the service was very good.
I try to understand the price gouging on food I can make at home since they’re in such a tourist based location, but this is also Philadelphia and there are hundreds of far better restaurants.
Not only did they try to report that I skipped my reservation, they also charged my card twice.
There’s a reason the Philly Service Industry doesn’t support you unless you’re hosting a Diageo event and we have to go.
Our group of four came to enjoy brunch at Red Owl Tavern before a day at a museum. Everything everyone ordered was delicious, our orders were correct, and our server was delightful. From the cinnamon roll to share to my huevos rancheros, we really enjoyed our visit. I only wish the hot food could have arrived hot-not warm but cool in the middle. We sent nothing back because the flavors were amazing, but we hope next time our dishes will be served more appropriately heated.
Graciously accommodated our last minute 12-person brunch. Good for adults and kids alike. Fresh squeezed OJ, attentive servers, fun food, something for everyone.
They completely changed the menu and took off all the good items. What’s left is just ok. The grilled cheese is just a basic grilled cheese that you can make at home. They had 2 items that were delicious, and they are both gone.
Took 10 minutes for anyone to come greet us at our table and when they did it was the manager. He didn’t introduce himself, just asked what we wanted to drink. Our actual server did not come to the table for another 10-15 minutes to take our order. The food was delicious, the service was horrible.
The cheesesteak was so worth it!
Bar staff are fantastic
Food is very good. It’s pretty lively so not for quiet meal.
Everything was delicious. We had the pierogies, burrata toast and wedge salad for appetizers. For entree we had the short rib cavatelli, roasted Amish chicken and lobster Mac n cheese. All very good especially the short rib cavatelli. Service was very good. The food served was timed nicely no rush. Overall great experience
Ate in hotel after long day. Had reservation and place not crowded yet tried to sit us at a small table in middle of noisy walkway when nice booths available. Moved us on request but annoying. The service was a bit rushed. We hated a Caesar Salad which was average. My husband had short ribs which he enjoyed and I had strip steak the steak was cooked well and flavorful but had too much salt. Twice baked potato was a bit sloppy but also tasty. Probably would not return given all the amazing restaurants in Philadelphia.
Took a long time for dessert to come out. Nice they leave water bottle on table. Cheesesteak was just ok. Long hike and steps to bathroom. Great location. Kids pasta was dry with an odd sauce that comes on the side.
Always have liked the Red Owl. Convenient, nice decor, solid food and drink menu.
Very limited menu on weekends
Food was ok but overpriced
Service was sporadic
We had looked forward to dining at The Red Owl for quite some time. We were seated and Eric took our order. Approximately 30 minutes later our appetizers were delivered. Forty minutes later our entrees were delivered.
We had to ask other staff when our meals would be delivered. Eric saw nothing wrong with all of these delays. We opted to leave after an extremely disappointing experience. I asked to speak with the manager. After waiting yet another 10 minutes, we left The Red Owl thoroughly disappointed.
We’ll be back!
The food was really good and our waitress was wonderful! Even gave us a free dessert! Definitely will go back again sometime!
Been frequent diners in recent past. Food was not like before. Bar food trying to be restaurant food. Over salted. Won’t be back.
I took my team to Red Owl for our annual team dinner after an evening of Axe throwing at Kick Axe. The staff at Red Owl provided excellent customer service, including their General Manager sending over multiple free appetizers to get us started. There was an issue with one of the steaks we ordered (ordered rare but came out well done) but the staff worked quickly to remedy the situation and the Chef personally delivered the new steak and apologized. This may not seem like a bid deal but our team just spent multiple days in team meetings talking about taking ownership of our mistakes and how that goes along way to improving the Customer (internal and external) Experience and Service. To see this live and in action definitely struck a cord with our group and made a disappointing experience easier to digest. Overall the team had a great experience and will be on our repeat list should the team stay in Old City once again (typically stay in Center City closer to our offices.)
Overpriced and underwhelming. Salads came out soggy and swimming in dressing. Entrees were cold, proteins overcooked, and sides undercooked.
I would have liked to have seen more diet friendly foods or vegetarian options. There was a large amount of deep fried foods and not must choice other than a salad.
The food service was a bit slow but my bartender was amazing. the burger had mayo even though i requested it without it. The drinks were so delicious and the dessert was awesome!!!
A friend and I stopped in for brunch and was blown away with how the restaurant looked so quaint and rustic. You can be dressed up or down and still fit right in. The food was AMAZING!! Nothing disappointed. I plan to go back and try some of the other menu options. I can only speak for brunch when I say you cannot go wrong with choosing this as your next dining option!
We had an excellent dinner at Red Owl Tavern tonight! We ordered the Caesar salad to start, then Steak au Poive and the roasted chicken. The salad was crispy and delish, made from local lettuces. Both the chicken and steak were cooked perfectly and were amazing!
We will def be back next time we are in town.
Server Francis was also very helpful; thank you!
It was a great visit! The food was on point and the staff was beyond excellent. Everyone we encountered was fantastic. Thanks for a great lunch!
Very nice waitress.
Restrooms are not very conveniently located. Quite a hike.
The restaurant would benefit from additional staff. The wait staff seemed a little inundated.
Thank you for your feedback and know that we would love to host you at the Red Owl Tavern in the future to show you how great we can actually execute!
Red Owl is always my primary "go to" restaurant when I visit Philly. The food is always amazing, the crowd is always friendly, and the service is always outstanding. I visit Philly at least once a month and each time I'm at Red Owl I meet strangers that seem like friends. Good vibes, good food, good people, and great service! Every time!
First time coming here for me and my friend so I wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s in an area where there are a lot of tourists but the place feels big and open which I liked. The waitress we had was ok but took a significantly longer time to first approach our table than she did with the tables she had after us I noticed. We went for brunch. We ordered the mimosa special that mentioned a bottle to share and various juices, but when we ordered we were told you have to get and walk over to add juice to your mimosa. I’m sorry but I don’t see why any customer would like this as compared to having small carafes sent to the table like most brunch spots do. Our waitress could have offered to Atl east bring our orange juice with our bottle but she just brought the bottle and glasses. I later asked for a carafe of OJ and we just used that instead of getting up for each new pour.
The food...the big cinnamon roll they have was disappointing. For some reason they didn’t have the apricot glaze and normal presentation but instead had chocolate in it? Thankfully we liked chocolate too lol. The actual roll was too airy for me for a quality cinnamon roll and the icing was way too light and tasted closer to whip cream than icing. The eggs Benedict I ordered was the best part of the meal however it took 2 tries by the cook. The first time my eggs Benedict came out with the eggs wayyy overdone. It’s frustrating because too many times restaurants prejudge me and assume I want my eggs well done maybe because I’m black? We are not all alike. I like my eggs runny. I like my poached eggs POACHED. The manager at least did come out and apologize and confirm the 2nd dish was better and it was. The waitress had a very nonchalant attitude, not mean but i just didn’t like it. I also unlike common belief am a very good tipper but I’m happy I wasn’t paying and having to tip on this date lol. Doubt I will go back with all the restaurants I have to choose from in old city closer to me.
Kendra, I wanted to thank you for your feedback concerning your most recent experience at the Red Owl Tavern. We will take this information and work towards executing at a higher level.
Celebrated a friends birthday. Always enjoy this going to this restaurant with their attentive service and good food. Great location as well. I recommend you try it.
Second time coming (loved it the first), service is always impeccable. Last time we came here for a break from cheesesteaks but ended up getting talked into one and it was amazing. We came back for the cheesesteak but found it to be a bit over seasoned. My wife had to order a ceasar salad to go and didn't eat anything except the crutons and grilled chicken (( which was $4 to add )) because the ceasar dressing was horseradish and mayonnaise.... That's it. We'll of course be back the next time we're in Philly and I'll just mention I'd prefer my meat a little less seasoned. 😊 Oh! Also they were out of the Puree for the Bellini bar and while they substituted with juice which was totally fine, I'd come to expect more from a place that saw me not eat my cheesesteak order something else and still charged me for both.
We ate outside. Everything was good. We'll be back.
