Contemporary American
The sister restaurant to State Bird Provisions (right next door), The Progress is also the vision of chef-owners Stuart Brioza & Nicole Krasinski, but with a broader scope: a choose-your-own-adventure family-style menu that exemplifies contemporary, rustic California cooking. Dinner features an à la carte menu, all designed to be served family style. The bar in front is open to walk-ins all night and features our full menu. An expansive and eclectic wine list as well as a carefully curated cocktail program round out the festive offerings.

What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
8.5

The Progress, on Fillmore, is a great time and a good scene, with excellent food.

Ratings 8.0-8.5:The best way to think about restaurants in the low to mid 8′s is that these are the places you would absolutely go back to, anytime. These restaurants are ones that you want to bring a friend to, just so they can also experience the duck carnitas, or burger, or whatever dish the place is known for.

The only downside was the noise level. My guest and I could barely hear one another. The decibel level was 84. Any way to get things quieter?
The food and service were super!

Wonderful meal at The Progress! The duck platter was so delicious, the brussels sprout dish was the best brussels sprout dish I've ever had and the hot toddy panna cotta was amazing! Will be back again - every time the menu is a little different and every meal so far has been A+

Heard really good things about this place before, but unfortunately the food was highly disappointing. Out of the 7-8 different meals we tried only one hit the standards of what you’d expect from a Michelin starred restaurant.

This was truly original food, beautifully presented. Although it was the popular plate sharing, the waiter helped us organize a wonderful meal.

Always great, perfect evening. Hardly worth complaining about but when we were seated, we saw that there were two open booths that we would have preferred. We asked the maitre d' if we could have a booth, and she just ignored us. Let the booths just sit there empty for about ten minutes, and then seated others there. Seemed a little bit rude, no biggie, though. Only other thing that is a little bit off is that they recommend for a party of 4 to have one main entree, and 4 or 5 small plates. So we did that, but the small plates are really small, and they came one by one. Each small plate has two maybe three bites for each person. So you get two bites of food, then wait about 10 minutes for another two or three bites. By the time you get to the third small plate, and you've had a couple of drinks, it's not so bad, but it would be better to bring a couple of these small plates at the same time.

We had an early reservation and the mayhem outside of state bird provisions had me a little concerned. We got right in and had a great table in a quiet corner. It’s a zoo outside at 5:30!

The cocktails were delicious and well-conceived. The family-style dining was fine for two but I can imagine it would be amazing with a bigger party. We had the pork chop special which was fantastic. The sides were all on point. Dessert was great. Only disappointment was an Americano instead of a cup of coffee, I’d have just ordered an espresso instead.

Excellent service, great food.

Progress is a gem. Spectacular service from the greeting through the departure. Shared plates are outstanding, varied, unique, well prepared and tasteful. While most are small plates, the main platters are substantial....though you can make a meal from all the smaller plates. A must go to restaurant and one we’ll return to again and again. Again the staff is well trained and exceptionally stunned to patrons needs and requests...even if you have to send a cocktail back once in a while.

For a high end restaurant, we were disappointed with the waitstaff as they seemed to have a “abrupt” attitude. We were told immediately that we did not order enough food even though that included seven appetizers and an entree. We told our server that we would order more food later (which we did) but that seemed to just add to the negative attitude.
Bottom line... the food was good but the waitstaff will prevent us from a return visit.

We had 4 dishes mostly veggies and 3 were not good. The only good dish was the squid ink pasta. We also had 2 dessert dishes and only one was good. Not extrodinary, just good. For the price, this restaurant’s food is a one star. I would not recommmend.

Great ambience and service but we were disappointed with the food. The cavatelli al ragu pasta was excellent but the lamb tartare was almost bland, the kimchi tempura was tasteless, and the veal piccata had no crunch and the oil was borderline rancid. For that price range we had higher expectations.

The Progress exceeded expectations. We had a group of 6 so were able to try 18 items off the menu. There was not a single item that wasn't delicious and inventive. The menu is extremely well balanced with several veggie, seafood, and meat options. I'd love to return next time I'm in SF!

With the emphasis on family style with this menu, I thought it would be perfect for a family celebration that was both upscale but yet comforting (sharing is caring, right?)

Unfortunately, the portions were nothing close to sharable and quickly we had to turn the reality of what was happening into a joke because with six of us, there was barely a bite of each dish to go around.

"Hope you enjoyed your quarter of a Brussel Sprout" - we were both laughing at the situation but also crying from hunger and frustration. We started frantically checking if our local burger place would still be open when we got back.

Yes, we could have ordered more of each dish, but by the time we figured that out - the food, albeit most of it tasty*, had terrible value and we didn't want to give more money than the 12 dishes we had already ordered.

The pacing of the meal was also weird, we had our plates changed three times although they were barely dirty each round having only seen a morsel - the aforementioned Brussel Sprouts weren't brought out with the mains as a side, they were brought out between the salads and the mains - odd in my experience.

*The 32oz bone-in rib eye was the most expensive thing on the menu and we were hoping it would save us from starvation. There was an unusually long pause before it came out (see above awkward pacing) - but when it finally got to the table, the meat was WAY under-seasoned and the miso sauce which was intended to be the seasoning was really just an odd pairing that didn't really jibe.

We honestly couldn't wait for the meal to end and to leave which was really sad. I apologized to everyone for choosing this place - I was hoping for more of a combo of ad hoc with State Bird and this fell way short.

Maybe this place is good for a party of 2 to eat family style? I think it needs serious parameters to be a good experience.

was a bit disappointed, due to the fact that this was a 1-star michelin restaurant. don't get me wrong, the food was really good and high quality, but in my opinion, some of the dishes were a bit of a miss, some of the dishes were really small, and it was that inconsistency that made me feel it didn't live up to the 1-star rating. add to that the cost, and i just don't think it was a good value.

> so the caviar dish -- way too small, taste was not special in any way.
> brussel sprouts dish -- again, way too small, and you can find similar if not better representations, elsewhere
> salad -- good, but puny. it's supposed to be a dish to share, but we were scrapping for individual leaves.
> dessert -- just weren't that memorable.
> manhattan -- again, puny. served in a really small, non-manhattan style glass.

of course, the interior decor is beautiful, the service was just fine.
