While travelling to Istanbul and Northern Cyprus Ibrahim dreamed of reinterpreting the cuisine of his own cultural heritage. Years later the dream of his own restaurant took on the form of a style of eatery known as a Meyhane.
Intrinsic to a Meyhane is a sense of nostalgia and romance. Underpinning the Meyhane tradition is a convivial atmosphere characterised by a fun, social style of eating and drinking. Food is always shared – a central tenet of Turkish custom and an underlying feature in hosting guests.
Meze – abundant / colourful and creative / seemingly endless little dishes – invites the diner to commence their evening with cold dishes serving up an array of vegetables, yoghurts, cheeses, fish and offal.
What Insiders Are Saying
Enjoy a delicious Turkish dinner at Stanbuli, and then settle into the marble-top bar for the rest of the night.
Really enjoyed our meal at this restaurant. We were seated at the bar and the waiter/barman was super helpful and attentive. We let them know we did not have long as we were heading to a show and the food appeared very quickly. It was delicious, wonderful flavours, put together perfectly. Would highly recommend this place
We had not been to Stanbuli for a while and the last occasions when we ate there we were very pleased with the advant gard twists to fine turkish dishes. We were very disappointed to find that now it has adopted a very ordinary meyhane menu and not a very good one at that. We are a Turkish family despite my name and know what to expect. We won't be coming back
Fantastic everything!!! Service and food simply outstanding
The lamb neck is incredible, atmosphere is lovely and staff attentive.
We did the chef pick and although a lot of food and tasty not value for money . Would be best to choose own food. Felt rushed near the end. Also 8.45 being second sitting was a little too late.
Great food, great service and an interesting menu. Staff passionate about the food and wine
Delicious food especially the octopus and potatoes - outstanding. Delicious salads and vegetables. Bread was delicious. Can’t fault the food. The ambience is not quite there in the upstairs room - very noisy and a bit bland. Service was patchy - we waited around 15 minutes for a drink order to be taken and half an hour for our order to be taken despite having to be out of the restaurant within a less than two hour time slot. Value - perhaps a little on the expensive side given a lot of the dishes we had were vegetable based. But give it a try if you haven’t been.
Very professional service from the moment we arrived. Nothing was too much trouble. Excellent food. Our table of 4 decided to go with the banquet, which was excellent. Our only complaint - too much food! We were 4 hungry people but simply couldn’t eat it all.
Brilliant as always.
We wanted to try something different (not Asian, Italian or Australian food) and was a great surprise. The place was really nice and fancy (the only thing that we missed were the chairs with backrest). The waiter was charming and helped us a lot to choose the food because we barely know Turkish food. The dishes were really tasty, and we enjoyed our dinner. If I have to say something bad, maybe the wine was a bit expensive.
The food and atmosphere at Stanbuli is so vibrant. Thoroughly enjoyed everything from the moment we were seated. The waiters were wonderful and the food was amazing. Will definitely be recommending Stanbuli to all my friends & family.
It was great. The food was fabulous and the vibe terrific. It was noisy though, which made conversation hard.
We had the banquet which was good value and delicious! Our waitress was just delightful. The food at Stanbuli is always a hit and so many great options for vegetarian diners.
Incredibly delicious, tantalising and vibrant food. Lovely interior (with special attention to preserving the heritage storefront) and amiable ambience, it was the perfect location to celebrate my Man’s 45th birthday with an intimate and indulgent meal. Special thanks to the barman who suggested the delightful sherry accompaniments to our desserts. Bloody yum!
Gorgeous food but banquet option not the best value for money. Impeccable service and beautiful restaurant.
Turkish is one of our favourite food but this place might be the first time and last time for us. Food was great and service was good but we prefer to enjoy a food setting on a normal chair, not with uncomfortable wooden bar chair, and looking at the white wall. We would be happy to pay the kinda bill if they have a better ambience, interior, and music.
Have heard great things about this place, so took my mum there on sat night! It was sooo loud we almost left right away, but after working all day, just wanted to eat & enjoy some wine. It took a while to get a food menu, I actually had to ask for one. Service was good, however having not been there before we asked our waiter how many dishes we should order, in which case we were advised 4 Meze starters & 2 mains. By the time the mains came out we had to box them up to take away having around a mouthful of each main. So so disappointing. We had a whole octupus & 4 huge lamb steaks for 2 people just in the mains. Wine was $16-$18 a glass and delicious. I’ve worked in hospitality for 20 odd years & felt there was no need to upsell this amount of food for 2 people, 1 being elderly! Anyway I will not be returning or recommending this restaurant. When I asked to speak to the Manager, it turned out that he was actually our waiter, so he really should have known better. When I complained to him about his recommendation he did say he should have not done that & took a couple of things off, so we paid $190 & he took about $25-$30 off, personally I would have taken off the mains $80 worth. He was a nice guy, but super Stuffed up!
Great service! Very friendly staff who are constantly making sure you are ok and everything is ok. Will visit again.
Amazing food, great service and a great price.
Can’t wait to go back.
Food is amazing! You will not go home hungry! Staff is amazing. Went here for my birthday and staff certainly made me feel special.
Food at Stanbuli is truly amazing, as is the ambience of the restaurant. Unfortunately we felt the waitress upsold quite a lot so we ended up with way too much food and a bill to match.
My dining experience @ Stanbuli was of excellent standard.
I took my Friend to Stanbuli for her Birthday.
It was her first time attending this Restaurant.
We both enjoyed all the food items that were served to us both.
The Entree items were all very tasty and wholesome.
Our main course items were all very tasty also.
All these foods come from the Turkish Culture.
I recommend to all people to book in a Reservation and enjoy a dinner evening / night @ Stanbuli.
The Restaurant is very classy & unique.
I will always recommend this Restaurant to Family & Friends.
Fabulous everything except for the noise level. Food and staff 5 star
Due to technical problems and misunderstandings , I have had a payment issue at the restaurant last night. I have been embarrassed, belittled, put into a very low position and being yelled at and asked to leave the restaurant while I was trying to pay. My endless request of asking him to calm down did not work and he didn’t let me speak to any other manager or the owner. It will be the one and only restaurant in Sydney that I will not be walking in the door ever again. Horrible experience and I am still upset by it.
Fantastic service and food, but severely letdown by the ambience factor: it was as noisey as a nightclub upstairs and the music selection belonged in a suburban RSL, not a Modern Turkish restaurant. Overall however I cannot fault Stanbuli, and the service was 100%!
The food was fine, however the service and attitude of the wait staff was probably the worst I have ever experienced. Also they served us beer that was out of date and tried to pass it off as being ok. Also there is no signage - we walked up and down the street trying to find the restaurant. Wouldn’t return.. based purely on the terrible service.. it’s Newtown not Paris guys..
Great food with very attentive service. We were probably encouraged to order too much.
Super tasty! Great food was amazing (best octopus I ever had) and the staff great. Thank you
We ordered the tasting menu and asked the chef to select the dishes. Everything was fresh and delicious. We also made a special request to try the Beef Rib as part of the tasting menu and the friendly staff were so kind to make this happen. We felt very lucky and very special. The beef rib was INCREDIBLE!
OMG. I didn’t eat the entire next day - I was so full. The food was sensation and the service was outstanding. So much food with the banquet- I would probably al la carte next time as we had so much food leftover but it was anazing. And the baclava sooooooooo delicious abs I’m not a desert person. It’s not to sweet and big delicious chunks of pistachio. So impressed - loved it ❤️
First time there but would go again. Food is excellent and service good. Ambience is buzzing. We were downstairs. Considering having a party upstairs.
Fantastic food and fabulous service highly recommend
Was absolutely fabulous. The food was a high end version of Turkish food. Staff really attentive and helpful.
Amazing place to dine in , their Turkish cuisine is quite yummy and tasty. Great staff and awesome service.
It was a delicious but uneven experience. It has a wonderful ambience and the small mezi plates and the whole whiting were absolutely delicious. However the lamb was tough and uninviting and coloured my view of the meal.Interestingly there was a bordeaux blend from the gallipoli peninsular which was a curiosity but perhaps overrated for the price.A very enjoyable experience which next time will be sculptured to the strengths of the restaurant.
The food was tasty but I feel it was very overpriced
Food yumm, service fantastic... loved it.
Stanbuli is our favourite restaurant in Sydney, and we always dine here when up from Melbourne. We loved the new menu and the stand-our dish was most definitely the grilled calamari, beans and celery dish. The most amazing combination of flavours! Unfortunately, we weren’t able to order dips with our pita bread, which we thought was rather silly. Everyone around us was eating it as part of the banquet menu, but we weren’t able to order it as it wasn’t on the menu as a separate item. And it is not an item that would normally sell out. This was disappointing, as the pita was very bland without it. We also thought the previous spiced bread was so much better - please bring it back! The service was not up to it’s usual standard. The waitress forgot one of our kingfish dishes and was not apologetic, so we were left hungrier than normal.
Restaurant was too noisy. A table of four and we callus not hear each other. Food and service excellent. Please get some sound attenuation installations.
