Sir and Star is one of the best dining experiences in Northern California. Get your ass out to the hunting lodge in Olema.
We had a 6:30 reservation and didn't see wait staff until 6:50. Drinks didn't come until 7:00. Food service didn't happen until 7:15. We ended up paying the check at 9:30. Wait service was sloooooooow. Food was underwhelming. Maybe they had a really off night.

For its notoriety I was disappointed. I would expect more taste exploration. There was a similarity among all plates, very little variation in texture, sweet, sour, color, hot, cold. I want more excitement for my taste buds. The best dish was the spinach and aspargus with crab sauce. The house desert although good and was the only plate with sweet, sour and warm and was still just beignets.
Amazing!!! We don’t want to tell anyone so we can keep this exquisite gem to ourselves!
Beautiful food served in a beautiful room. The candles, branches, and space are artfully arranged to create an incredibly romantic setting. The services was a complete delight.

Sir and Star really hit all the notes the other night. The roasted crab is the best Dungeness I've ever had and their old standard "faux gras" appetizer was yummy as always. The server was authentic and attentive, albeit a little clueless about the wines. Overall a very romantic, special evening.
The Sir and Star is our very favorite place to dine in the US. The food is extraordinary, the rooms are divinely unique, quiet and comfortable, and just about everything is exquisitely made. There is palpable thoughtfulness and love in every bite. We don’t live near it, but go at least once or twice a year for special occasions. Margaret has an extraordinary touch in everything she does! Brava!
Always an adventure that never disappoints! Menu changes using local ingredients in a space that is decorated in a unique style that enhances the dining experience.
Seemed like the waitress was trying to handle too many tables at once. They don’t have a great wine list - we tried twice and both times their recommendations disappointed. They served crab legs that required cracking the shells and everything but no bowls or extra napkins to deal with the mess. Overall, it was not a great meal.

Great service in a very special environment. We were there for Christmas time and the decorations were stunning and natural and the food was brilliant.
Every time we go to California, we try to go to Sir and the Star. It is one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. The menu changes according to what the sources supply. Everything is local. Everything is
delicious. The rooms are decorated according to the season. This time the entrance of the INN was like walking through a grove of pine trees. The service is perfect (always). Because it was the holiday season, the mantle of the big fireplace was decorated with teddy bears of all sizes.
The menu and food preparation at Sir and Star is outstanding. But the service was unprofessional...ridiculous even. It was the Sunday before Christmas Eve and the wait staff was stressed and they expressed that quite clearly to us. Someone poured a glass of white wine into a half-full water glass. Also poured a Pisner beer into a water glass. It took a long time before anyone came by to check on us and fix it.
When the runner (the guy who brings the plated food from the kitchen) brought me the wrong dish, I explained how the waitress had made a substitution. He said he didn't have time to summon the wait staff to make the correction because they were so backed up on the kitchen. When I wanted to order some coffee to go with my meal, we couldn't get the attention of our waitress, although we asked two other people to find her. They also dropped a big tray with a boom and other strange sounds from the overly dark and loud dining room.
Okay, so there was also bad service at my local deli on Christmas Eve because they hired a college student who was home for the holidays. Did that happen at Sir and Star as well? Because you'd have to assume they KNOW people will select this restaurant for a special holiday meal.
The food and nighttime ambiance were actually quite lovely for my husband and I who reserved a table for supper and a hotel room upstairs to spend the night. But the awkward customer service began when booking the hotel room. It required several phone calls and emails to understand why there was a flat $500 rate for all the rooms on Saturday to include dinner and breakfast—even though we were also told there were suites and then standard rooms that would imply some would be more expensive and with more amenities than others. The most awkward part was to wake up at a completely empty hotel on Sunday morning and to never receive the breakfast that was to be included in the overnight package. We left at 9:20am as the building was completely silent (no staff and no other guests) and there were no other cars in the parking lot. We phoned twice that morning because of the confusion and never received a return phone call. We then emailed and they responded to tell us we were at fault for leaving “early” and they refused to grant us a refund for the value of the breakfast.
The food was great but the service was poor, inattentive and made this experience mediocre. I waited years to go to this restaurant and decided to go for a very special occasion. Our water glasses were empty most of the night, we had to beg for more wine and dirty plates remained too long on out table. I wish we would have stayed at the Farm table bar across the street as the service was much better.
We had a wonderful though imperfect experience at Sir and Star. The ambiance was elegant in a very unique way. Quite enjoyable on a rainy wet night. Inside, the service was perfectly attentive without distracting from our little foursome’s conversation. And the two recommended bottles of red wine were lovely, exactly what we were looking for. But while the food was good it was not exceptional. We had the menu à prix fixe. A starter of pumpkin soup with fresh herbs was earthy and flavorful. The second course of crab was over roasted. And dried. Served with a strange white dressing (ranch?) instead of usual drawn butter. The entree of duck was fantastic. Crisp skin and meaty leg/thigh. But then the dessert of beignets with duo of sauce was underwhelming in flavor and execution. In spite of the dinners inconsistency, we thought it was a special enough experience that we plan to return.
An outstanding evening, creative delicious set menu and the service impeccable which made our special occasion so memorable. Atmosphere, perfect!
We're regulars & love everything about Sir and Star, especially its quirkiness at times. Our waiter this time around, Michael, was a trip. A little discombobulated & could tone it down a bit.
Exceptional Supper Dining Experience! While we had to wait quite a while for our table the owner Margaret was gracious and fun. She kept us updated and satiated. The menu is based upon what grows in Marin county or nearby and everything we had was perfectly created. Each dish was a uniquely and carefully blend of flavors that worked beautifully. The ling cod finger on corn and nettles was divine. The pork parts with a smoked red onion was such a great flavor combo. We would come back and stay nearby again just to experience another dinner here. The waiters seem to be trying hard but were just a tad off but the food more than made up for that and it may just have been a tough night for them as they had a big party in another room.
Sir and Star was recommended by friends while we were staying in Inverness. We've eaten in some of the most highly rated restaurants in Northern California. Hands down, Sir and Star is THE best. The food is outstanding, but so is the rest of the experience. The setting is lovely. Small venue, but feels very gracious. Impeccable service. Just a first class experience.
The service was spotty. Start was fine, but after meal went on, the service became very strange. After the entire was served, the waiter never came back to see if everything was okay, which it wasn't. After waiting 10 minutes to get the waiters attention, I finally stood up and waited to get his attention. I told him the entree was not to my liking. He whisked it away, and before I ever got the opportunity to let him know what I didn't like about the dish, or what I wanted instead, he came back to tell me the chef was taking care of it. What came back was some of the vegetables that were in the first dish, and not the ones I liked. That was the strangest "make it right" I've ever had in a restaurant.
Then after long pauses between some of the courses, the bill finally arrived and it was for the wrong table. So after getting the waiters attention, he went to make the bill correct, and after 15 minutes more of waiting, we came back to say that our credit card had been 'lost' in the kitchen somewhere and that they were trying to find it. Well, they found the card, gave us the correct bill and wow we were happy to leave this restaurant. For all the waiters hype about their glorious chef, the food was fine, but certainly not great. We were celebrating my birthday, and I had certainly hoped for a better evening.
P.S. The dining room was so dark, I couldn't even see what vegetables I was eating. Yes, there was a candle, but even with that, I still couldn't make out what was on my plate. Next time, if there is a next time, I will bring flashlights.
This food is exquisite, however, it is marred by the deplorable service. When I pay $200 for dinner (not counting wine), I want the experience to be fun! I don't just go to eat food plunked on our table in a perfunctory way. Here's what happened: We arrived for our reservation on time and were graciously met by the host/owner who gave us some sparkling water and set a wonderful tone. Once our table was ready, we waited 25 minutes for someone to take an order/speak to us (there were many empty tables by then so busyness was not an issue). Finally, we asked a server if someone was going to ever help us--it was not our waiter but another server who took our table under her wing, but without any enthusiasm, apology, kindness, or effort. She plopped each dish down and went on to the next thing. At the end of the meal, we even asked if we had been somewhat inappropriate by asking her for help. Rather than doing what most employees of fine dining restaurants would be compelled to do--that is, reassure us and maybe even give us a little treat, she responded, "no, he--nodding to the other waiter--just has a lot going on tonight." This is the third time we've had substandard service at this restaurant--is it because we're a lesbian couple? It would be really sad if implicit bias was a reason to refuse good service to people willing to plunk good money down for food, drink, and tip. I can't recommend this place to my gay friends, but would highly recommend their delicious food to anyone who asked. (Also, the place is gorgeous, but the ambience was marred by the service.)

Absolutely HORRIBLE experience. Extremely high priced, with severely limited menu and if you decide that you dont want to finish your meal then you are charged a $50 (PER PERSON) cancellation/no show fee. There are PLENTY of other better restuants in the immediate area to pick from.
Wonderful food. It was a memorable evening. Food taste delicious. Fresh and local ingredients. Perfectly cook and seasoned.
Too stiff and near unfriendly service. We all felt awkward upon ordering and then the food was just so so.

Very Inventive cuisine, absolutely delicious. Pricey, with somewhat limited selections if you don't do the full on dinner, but perfectly prepared. Very limited wines by the glass. However, we loved our meal and will return.
The food and service is always superb, but the atmosphere and setting put this restaurant over the top. Casually elegant and a little quirky. Unless you already live in Pt. Reyes Station, it will most likely be a long drive. However, that's part of the experience because the scenic roads and often dramatic weather are great preludes to the meal itself.
Enjoyed the experience and the meal. Well thought out. I live far-ish away so it's not feasible for me to make it a regular stop, but will keep it in mind. Especially for friends making the tourist rounds in Point Reyes area.

Absolutely lovely restaurant and dining experience. It was my birthday, so I didn't care about expense. It's all about the food......and service was wonderful, too!! Atmosphere is very special.....don't want to spoil it for anyone else. You have to see and enjoy the inside!!
The decor suggests eating outdoors in the winter, under a canopy of dead tree limbs. The music is odd and distracting. The menu is hard to read and very limited. There was no fish choice and only one vegetarian option which is called bouillaBIASSE. Apparently a lot of people are actually surprised when they find out it is not bouillaBAISSE. the traditional fish stew, but I can’t fault them for the error. From other reviews, some vegetarians love it and some hate it. My vegetarian guest liked it a lot. The soup and salad were unremarkable. The quail was dry and very salty. The pig was ok, but one of the guests said it had an overwhelming smoke taste and the menu didn’t say it was smoked. The buffalo ice cream sundae was large and very dellicious after the so-so meal.
This was our anniversary dinner, so we were looking forward to an excellent dinner. We were very disappointed with the quality of the food and the plating. The service was average, and our server behaved like an avatar. She offered no suggestions, did not ask us how we liked the food, and was not friendly. Both my wife and I felt ill when we left the restaurant.
First of all, if you are a vegetarian, avoid this restaurant. They had one vegetarian entree option and it was laughably bad...only my wife wasn't laughing. The vegetarian bouillabaisse had an assortment of whole, barely cooked potatoes, cauliflower, other unappetizing vegetables and a soggy mess of an attempt at tempura on top...over a splash of not very tasty tomato sauce. A disaster. I told the waiter as much, and he deducted the cost of the dish without argument. That was gracious, but not what one would hope for a special anniversary dinner.
I started with oysters (local) served with seaweed mignonette sauce. The seaweed taste was overwhelming and did nothing to enhance or balance the oysters (which were very good). My entree, the leg of duck, was small, over-cooked and over-sauced on a bed of mushy beans. It was what you might expect at a cheap bistro. But the price wasn't cheap.
Our impression was that the dishes we had were ill-conceived and prepared by someone without a refined palate. All in all, an underwhelming, disappointing experience.
The only positive thing I can say is that the restaurant itself is lovely. You can feast your eyes, but not your palate. Too bad.
This second visit (anniversary dinner after a long West Marin hike) was disappointing, vs. our first (birthday dinner) a few years ago. As a vegetarian and omnivore couple, we found the menu somewhat limited, especially for sharing. Ambiance, service, and location were great. Considered the $58 tasting menu, but did not work for us. Only a la carte meat items were chicken or pig. No lamb or beef (Steak was available but only for two people). Shared an ok salad. Each of us had the $28 vegetarian bouliabase. The vegetarian liked it, while the omnivore found it uninspired. Bison ice cream was very good. Maybe menu would be better on another night. Still worth a try if you are in the area.
We have enjoyed Daniel and Margaret's cooking for many years, but for some reason on this night some other table was garnering their attention. It took 1 1/2 hours to get the third course. There was about a 1/2 hour wait between the first and second courses. The rest of the night was fine and our waiter Mike gave us a glass of wine on the house. We have never experienced this in all the time we have been dining at Manka's and Sir and Star. Hopefully it was a one time event.
