Now, after three years as Executive Chef of Bice in Chicago, and together with his wife (and sous chef), Veronica, and his cousin (and hostess), Barbara, he decided to continue his gastronomic artistry and creativity in his restaurant named after himself "Riccardo Trattoria."
Here through the craftsmanship of an Italian food connoisseur, dishes are prepared with an almost zen-like essentiality that has shaped Riccardo's professional and existential life course.
What Insiders Are Saying
Classy without being overly pretentious. Riccardo Trattoria is one of our favorite Italian restaurants around.
This is a neighborhood gem. Well worth the the 10 minute taxi ride from downtown. It is very small so reservations are a must. Our server, Cesar, made excellent suggestions. The stuffed squash blossoms for an antipasto were delicious. Our party had veal parmagiana, pasta bolognese, pasta carbonara , and grilled octopus. Without exception, every dish was excellent.
While the food was ok, the attitude was not. We waited almost half an hour beyond the time of our reservation before being seated and no one even apologized for the delay. They have been in business long enough to know how to book reservations without having delays in seating people. They should have done better.
Our family loves this place! The service is amazing and the food is as well!i always order the homemade pasta with truffles.
Went for my fiancé’s birthday-the service was great! The food was delicious and great portions. We definitely be back!
Always great service and delicious food.
Living in the suburbs, we wanted to take in a high rated Italian restaurant. However, we feel we have better places to go around where we live. My wife had the Veal special and it was very salty. It tasted like sardines were grounded up on top of it.
I had the Bolognese and it was pretty good, but just about what I could have had closer to home.
All in all, a nice place but not worth the drive downtown.
Solid, unfussy, classic bistro atmosphere with great service and delicious food. Large menu could be explored nightly for a month and never get boring or redundant. Truffled burrata with prosciutto was addicting, rustic sausages in couscous were hearty and satisfying, black ink ravioli stuffed with baccala and bathed in a delicate saffron shellfish cream was a delight. My dining companion had a cioppino with perfectly cooked seafood in a rich broth.
Our waiter was a true professional in the manner perfected by European bistros and restaurants. Knowledgeable, willing to offer informed opinions on every course and beverage choice (versus saying something like, "I'd go with the chicken because I hate fish!"). Present and helpful but never cloying (or aloof), he was a steward to a true dining experience. Never once did he feel compelled to blurt, "how's everything tasting?" or "still working?" Never once did we feel neglected as chatted with other staff in the distance or disappeared inexplicably for long periods.
Really delicious food in a charming, cozy space. Service was excellent. We will return.
Francisco was an excellent waiter. The food was amazing (as usual)! Every time I go I feel like I am eating in a restaurant in Italy!
great food, excellent service. can be a little noisy
This restaurant is quaint and the staff is very attentive. The food is amazing and ingredients are fresh. Great experience!
It is such a great place all around. I love the food, the wait staff is so knowledgeable and friendly and it’s such an authentic Italian experience.
We loved it. Our server was helpful and appeared at just the right times. We were celebrating being in Milan a year earlier and this was close to that experience.
Great to introduce a neighborhood favorite to local friends. An intimate space that allows for conversation. Excellent food and knowledgeable servers.
We have been here a handful of times and each time we have thoroughly enjoyed everything about the restaurant. Food, service, cost - everything. I recommend this place to anyone looking for quality. You do not need to go downtown to get an amazing dinner. There is a lot of history in the area I would urge anyone to google!
As usual everything was excellent. Food service etc.. Riccardo always delivers a great experience. We have been coming for years, and it has been great every time.
We’ve been big fans ever since Ricarddo opened. Never been disappointed by any meal. A large and interesting menu with a genuine Italian chef from Milan.
It was Valentine's Day, and my date and I wanted to enjoy a meal with great service.
Service, as usual, is excellent. But, the food I have found on this occasion, and the lady visit, is slipping in quality. Pasta was overcooked, and the sauces were bland.
But, the octopus appetizer was excellent.
Excellent, authentic Italian with quality ingredients. Always a great experience!
We had a lovely experience at Riccardo Trattoria. My wife and I have been several times, but it was the first time for the other two people in our party. They loved it and said Riccardo is now one of their favorite restaurants and that they will be back.
Our server made our experience enjoyable. He was attentive without hovering and welcoming.
We had not been to Riccardo's in a few years and it was as good as we remembered. The service by Christian was as good as ever and he even remembered my husband's name. Definitely will go back and recommend to others.
Excellent service and the food was outstanding. I went for restaurant week and it was a great deal. I had the tuna tartare, it was ok but my husbands grilled calamari was delicious. I ordered the lamb shank for entree and it was excellent, so tender it melted like butter, great flavor too. I would definitely go back.
Outstanding food. Service was great. The chef came out to greet us. We will definitely be going there soon.
I have been going to Riccardo for years. The service and the ever evolving menu have never disappointed. Each time, I walk away more impressed which is an amazing feat. 6 of us were there at primetime on Friday night to celebrate a milestone birthday. The 7th person had a flat tire on the way and was consequently delayed. I was worried because I could see how busy they were. I asked if we could delay ordering entrees and instead order another appetizer while we waited. Our waiter was so incredibly gracious. He took the order and then told me not to worry or feel rushed and to enjoy our time together. Everything from the appetizers - try the zucchini flowers, to the pasta dishes - try the orrechiete with rapini and sausage - to the main courses - try the ossobucco or rack of lamb - to the desserts - try the pannacotta or ricotta cake... everything read incredible! Thank you Riccardo's for making my birthday such a wonderful memory.
Flawless, authentic, delicious: fantastic, sophisticated northern Italian food. Every dish was wonderful.
This cozy, nicely decorated restaurant is a welcome antidote to a bleak winter night. We came for the restaurant week fixed-price menu, which offered many more options than those we were seeing at some other restaurants, and had a delicious, relaxing meal. Everything our party of 4 ordered was excellent, and the waiter was very helpful and attentive. The sound level remained moderate, even when the restaurant became full, making it easy to have a conversation. We'll definitely be back.
The best Italian in Chicago, authentic, true to Itlay, excellent service.....my spouse is from Trevi, Itlay and knows! We love this place!
We had a fabulous experience dining at Riccardo. The menu is extensive, the food delicious, the wait staff amazingly attentive! One of our new favorites in Lincoln Park!
Went to have a nice date with my wife and check out the place for Restaurant week. We had never been before but saw lots of great reviews. We loved the look of the place and thought it had a great feel to it. We were warmly greeted and they took our coats. Wish we hadn’t done that...I don’t think the heater was keeping up with the cold all that well. My wife and I were cold the whole time we were there. The eggplant appetizer was probably one of the best eggplant dishes I have ever had... wonderful! I also ordered the minestrone soup. It was an odd purée like consistency with lots of potatoes. I didn’t care for it at all. The lamb shank was nicely prepared and very hearty. My wife ordered a seafood dish that was overpowered with mint, I am not sure if that was an accident or not, but I have never seen mint being paired with seafood. Perhaps it is an acquired taste. I’m not sure. The deserts were really good. I loved the tiramisu. All in all, our experience was just so so. On the plus, I still had a great time with my wife and we enjoyed our time together.
We went for restaurant week and all of our food was amazing and reasonably priced. Great wines and good atmosphere. All pastas we're homeade and good sized portions. Our server was excellent in providing suggestions since we had not been before but we will go back.
Excellent food and wine, which is very indicative of authentic fare found in Italy. While the restaurant is slim, that adds to the Italian feel. Have recommended to friends, and will continue in the future!
Such a great experience all the way around. Service, food, atmosphere.
Food and service was amazing! Only down side was that it was extremely crowded for such a small space. Although hearing the conversation at your table wasn't difficult, the same remained true for all of the tables around you. But I would still recommend 100%.
My favorite restaurant in Chicago -always an execllent meal
Always consistently great. Frankly, this is the best and most authentic Italian restaurant in Chicago. Staff is always very welcoming and friendly. Food is absolutely delicious.
Amazing pasta dishes and highly recommend the sea scallops appetizer!
Overpriced for lack of quality
I liked everything, I even tried the tripe, first time in my long life.
The food is very, very good and for a Monday night we we're glad we made a reservation.
