Wonderful ambience and very good food. We had a tasting menu which was excellent, The only criticism I have is that the waiters did not explain what the dishes were and we had to ask. I think it was just a lack of experience from their end and not being trained properly.

The venue is very suited to fine dining. The staff are friendly and attentive. The conversion of the prison to dinning and bar is innovative, inviting and comfortable. The food was of high standard, however the price is extremely exuberant. For the $95pp menu, it disappointed in size and portion. Was definitely not value for money. 1 x dish of extremely small portions for 2 people, while it is visually appealing in look when served, however it is not filling. We were hungry when we left the venue. We paid $ 230 for the meal (1 extremely small serving of 4 courses to share) and 2 drinks. Will only recommend for ambience and service and somehat the quality of the food, however not for value for money. Good experience for a once only.

I took my friends visiting from the UK. The restaurant is located in the old prison mess hall, adding to its appeal. We had the Chef's Selection four-course dinner. It was, we all agreed, the most fantastic meal, one we enjoyed very much! Even the creamed butter for our sourdough bread was worthy of comment! We loved every aspect of the meal, particularly the wide and eclectic selection of starter courses. I don't usually eat desserts, as I have a severe egg allergy and so many desserts contain egg, but they found something that was both mysterious, intriguing and delicious to amuse my palate! A thoroughly worthwhile dining experience. The only downside was that I had to work a lot harder than I would have expected to explain to the wait staff that I had booked the Chef's Selection in advance, that we were not guests at the hotel, and that we didn't need to have menus. I also attempted to pay discretely at the counter but was told that the account would be brought to the table. When it arrived, I noted I had been charged the extra for using a credit-card. Since I did not propose to pay by credit card, I asked for this to be removed. This led to an embarrassing and unnecessary discussion of the amount of the bill, in front of my guests.

Beautiful historic building near a modern hotel at Pentridge, Coburg. Outstanding food. We had the $95 chef’s selection which was as good fine dining as I’ve had anywhere. Really interesting wine list from many smaller vineyards but an expensive list. Bottle prices start from$78 and most are mid $90s and above. Some wines at the more affordable end would be good as well as some Riesling and Pinot Gris options . Service was well below the price point. Many staff but not coordinated. We were greeted by one staff member who then disappeared and never came back. Our second greeter took us to our table and delivered the wine and food menu and took time to explain the menu options. There were so many staff hanging around but it took a very long time for someone to take our order when it was not busy. We later ordered a glass of red, the bottle sat on the bar for 15 minutes until we had to ask someone to pour a glass. The restaurant has been open for 6 months and the co-ordination of the wait staff should be on point. Hopefully the service improves over time.

Wonderful food and great service (if just a bit slow to receive meal). Only issue was tables across back wall where lounge seating is located were very close together..no privacy for conversations. Diners next to us couldn't squeeze through table opening to get to seat.

Food was outstanding & overall rating would have been 5 stars except for 2 things: -our table was right next to the wait staff station, separated only by perspex and next to the open kitchen therefore noisy. We asked if possible to move when we arrived & despite several two-tables still being available, were told not possible. This seemed like a policy thing. -the short booking time of 1.5 hours (we were on time) seems a bit mean spirited given prices for main meals are roughly between $40-50. Finally, the kitchen seemed to function like a well-oiled machine, exhibiting a calm, efficient & professional demeanour at all times and its food was high quality. A few tweaks in the dining room would elevate the total experience to that which the food deserves.

Absolute fantastic experience at North & Common. The waiter commented on my wife and my suits and we mentioned we had gotten married that morning. Much congratulations and then 2 complimentary glasses of French champagne. What a way to help us cap of our first night as a married couple.

We enjoyed the ambience and food very much but the credit for the overall very enjoyable experience is due largely to the excellent service of the manager who was very friendly and generous with us. Knowing that it was my birthday, my dessert came with a candle and we had a lovely sparkling to go with our meal. He was attentive and helpful in recommending our order and most charming as well. A gorgeous venue, with amazing food. We had the chefs tasting menu, and they dealt with dietaries no problem. The wine list is superb, and we had the sommelier serve us and recommend some amazing wines. We were told at the end that they had been short staffed that evening due to sickness, but you wouldn’t have told as the standard of service was very high, and welcoming. Would highly recommend and will certainly be going back.

We very much enjoyed our meal at North & Common for a birthday celebration. Food was beautifully presented and tasty. Service was friendly and wine list was enough for us. I would recommend trying this restaurant - we found it after our tour of the Pentridge jail as North & Common is within the old Pentridge buildings.

Nice experience. Great cocktails and impressive wine selection. High end yet reasonably priced. Chose the Feed Me menu and the one piece of feedback I would give is that we weren't particularly impressed to be given the half roast chicken as a main. Though it was nice, we were prepared to be surprised with a daring chef's special - not well... roast chicken, which is what we would eat at home on a weeknight. Other than that it was a great experience.

Waitress was difficult to understand. Dessert menus offered to us after our starter, as they forgot our mains. Had the service of staff pouring a glass of wine and then taking the bottle from the table but forgot to return a couple of times, leaving us with and extended wait for our meal and empty glasses. They did give us the desserts for free at the end as an apology.

Chefs choice very below average Entrees ox tongue nice Main was chicken wow very average Desert was very confusing flavours Service was very good but food big let down, feel bad by saying this but it actually was the worse fine dining experience I've had with my wife with regards to the food just being honest It seems like try hard food, trying to be fine dining but nothing fine about it Food was very bland, didn't make sense and very disappointing A chefs selection is suppose to wow you, at least a few dishes, where you leave and remember that dish, not everything may be a wow factor but at least something must be for someone to dine again and come back. Waitress was awesome though must admit Ambiance ok too Overall would not dine here again My apologies
