Love Nico because the food is great, service excellent and the ambiance comfortable. It's nice to be able to carry on a conversation without having to shout! Great place for lunch or dinner.
Food was fresh, good and service was great...place was maybe 25% filled for lunch, likely due to low value - prices are far too high for what you receive. If prices were more reasonable, would go back; not sure if b/c connected to The Thompson or for some other reasons, but pricing relative to other lunch options was too high.
It was a really lovely meal. We enjoyed the branzino, two pastas, and the brussels sprouts bruschetta. All were great. The atmosphere is low key and comfortable.
Get together with out of town visitor
This was a first visit for our party of four, and each of us thought the food and service were terrific. I cannot recommend more highly the whole grilled branzino--simply superb. And my spaghetti squash starter was outstanding, too. We'll be back the next time we visit Chicago.
Yes...I would most assuredly recommend Nico to friend. The food is amazing. Wonderful tastes. Alex our server was attentive but not over bearing. We always sit at the "kitchen counter" to watch the chefs.
If you haven't tried Nico...do! You won't regret it.
I don't understand all the 5 star reviews. This restaurant is not a real Italian place. Menu is short and not exciting. The food was super salty and oily. Waiter had to be called over constantly and he mostly ignored us. The bread was a big chunk of dough, olive oil had no taste.
A throughly enjoyable experience. Our server was great at recommending his favorite dishes and pacing the meal so that we could relax and talk. Every dish we had was executed perfectly. We focused on fish for this trip and loved every plate. Don't miss the crudo options. We'll be back again to try their homemade pastas.
I would have given 5 stars if they had not put vinaigrette on the oysters without asking me. Otherwise a great experience.
They wouldn’t allow us in the main dining room with our stroller (babies were asleep) because it would block pathways and cause fire hazards. This would generally make sense, except the place was almost empty, with plenty of room to rearrange tables to avoid blocking any pathways. However, the employees were clearly not interested in making any type of effort, they didn’t even evaluate any possible options, neither did they even pretend to.
Our food was delicious and the staff went out of their way to help us find the perfect wine with our dinner. I return to Nico’s every time I’m in Chicago!!
The food selection was excellent, the preparation and presentation was spot on and the service was attentive without being intrusive. It was an overall positive dining experience.
Food was fantastic and ambiance amazing! Service was amazing as well.
My wife and I went for breakfast. Beautiful, relaxing place. Great service. The highlight for us was the Brussels sprouts bruschetta! Amazing combination of flavors and textures.
It was a very inviting, warm experience. It was my birthday and the servers were very nice and even gave us an appetizer on the house.
The food was delicious specially the brussels sprouts bruschetta the wait staff were very attentive definitely I will come back!
The seating is insulting. The tables in the middle of the room are so close together you feel as though it is a communal table - a bench at a picnic table. No longer recommend
Excellent food - different options than other restaurants
It was a fabulous evening. We enjoyed the dinner very much and were able to talk so we were very happy. I had scallops and pasta both of which were delicious. It was a happy atmosphere and those who looked after us were charming. I will certainly return when I visit Chicago. Thank you.
Sat at the chef's counter. Wonderful experience. The chef's were all very friendly and willing to answer questions. And the food was spectacular!
Brett was our waiter and he was fantastic. The service was outstanding. The food was to die for. This is now a must every time we are in Chicago.
Incredible food and service! Our server Anthony was incredible
Great place to eat. Brussel sprout bruschetta app. was fantastic, so was the scallop appetizer. My wife had the Sea Bass which was really good. I had the steak which is one of the best steaks I’ve had in a long time. I’ve been to numerous steak houses in the past couple of years and the steak at Nico was by far the best I’ve had. Cooked to perfection. The drinks were great. Only complaint about the drinks were the pours were a little small. Wine by the glass was fantastic. My cousins wife got the rigatoni bolognase which she loved. Our server was awesome. She was super laid back, and very helpful. We got a side of potatoes which were pretty good as well. Overall I would highly recommend this place to friends or anyone looking for a good meal.
My girlfriend and I were really looking forward to this place, but had a really poor experience. Our server ignored us most of the dinner, except when it was time to pay. The Busers were more helpful than our actual server. Our food was not good (extremely salted, the bread was refrigerator cold, and they gave us old spinach with the main course!). Unfortunately, this may have been the worst dining experience I have had in Chicago.
My reservation was for 7h30 PM on Friday, 15 February 2019. It makes no sense (no sense!) that you should have at the reception desk a person as disagreeable as the young woman who was on duty when my friends and I arrived. This person was unwelcoming, unsmiling, and determined to keep as closed a face as possible. By contrast, the person who took us to our seats and our waitress were both charming. Why on earth do you keep that unpleasant woman at the front desk? Is this really how you want to greet your patrons? Surely, you can find someone who, at the very least, will pretend to smile. We'll now give "Nico" a break for quite a while.
Exceptional room with exceptional food. Everything from seafood crudo plates to pasta, everything is great. Counter/chef seating adds to the entertainment value. Been here a few times and it’s always excellent.
Food was amazing

Went there for a birthday dinner with a friend last Friday. Sat in the bar for a drink, which has very nice ambience, and cordial bartenders. Good drinks as well, which I thought for Chicago were reasonably priced. The brussel sprouts bruschetta and the gnocchi were phenomenal, along with the tiramisu, which had a different, smoked taste to it. I would pass on the potatoes, as they are large and very flavorful. The tables are very close together, so if you're looking for intimate conversation, this isn't the place. Overall, I would recommend Nico.
All good until shortly b4 we were to leave when an intruder who entered thru the Hotel entrance stole a phone from a patron at a nearby table!
Warning to keep cell phones hidden away no matter how classy the restaurant is!!!😬
The restaurant seems a bit dated at this time. I came here when they first opened and had a marvelous experience. It was restaurant week, but they were behind on a Thursday and my party and I waited 30 mins to be seated with a reservation. The server took a bit to take our order. The menu was OK. I doubt I'd ever come back to be honest.
it was an amazing deal for restaurant week! lots of great food!!! not sure i'd pay the normal amount for italian food, but at restaurant week prices, it was great value!
Every bite was delicious. Best Tirimisu ever with (count them) nine layers of delicious décadence!
The food was amazing. The service not so great. The waiter did not check on us and we had to wait forever for a second round of drinks. She was not friendly and was not able to give us food suggestion.
Went for Restaurant Week, great deal and good selection. First time I have been there but would be happy to go back.
The service at the restaurant was a bit sterile. I reserved and had the option of counter or standard seating. I selected standard. When I arrived, I was taken to a counter seat and when I said that I requested standard seating the hostess looked confused and said she’d check to see if there was a place for me (restaurant was empty at 6 pm). She left me standing at the counter seat to check. She came back and put me at a table directly behind the counter seat. My server greeted me immediately after I sat and asked about drinks. I told him I needed a minute to look. He left and took an extremely long time to return - so much so that another server asked if I had been helped. He finally shows back up and take my wine order and I told him I was also ready to order food as well. He took my order and left. It took a bit to get my glass of wine and someone else brought it. They had runners for the food so the server came back for a brief second to see if my food was ok and left. My dessert was brought by a manager who asked if I needed anything else. I ordered coffee from him. When I saw the server again, he was asking if I needed anything else and when I said no, he put my check down. I received better service from everyone else. I noticed the other server was more pleasant and even gave one of her tables macaroons after their dessert. I wanted to feel valued and appreciated and that was missing for me. I participated in Restaurant Week and enjoyed every course - there was a total of four. I will definitely go back but would not want that server again.
Lovely people. I go there regularly, enjoy the food and appreciate the servers and host/hostesses professionalism/good work. One of the best values in downtown area of Chicago.
Summer time they all pay attention to my gorgeous dog and take care of him at the patio.
We were so disappointed because we wanted the restaurant week menu and there was only the brunch menu. I see that's stated on the website but missed it, I guess -- it's not on the actual menu, but on a link that connects to the menu. Anyway, the food was ok, but I would rather chose this restaurant for their pastas and dinner options rather than brunch.
I enjoy dining here any time I'm in town. Tonight, since it's restaurant week, I tried the prix fixe menu. The food was prepared perfectly, and I love that I can try something new and expand my horizons every time I'm here.
