Mattie's at Green Pastures Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary at Mattie's. We were not disappointed. The house is just so pretty and we can't wait to return when the weather is warmer so we can sit outside and enjoy the grounds. Such a great spot for a date night.
Outstanding service and really just a neat place in general. Waitress was knowledgeable of both the menu and the wine list.
Excellent food and beautiful place!
A surprisingly large parkland setting in town, with restaurant in a beautiful old Austin mansion
Such a beautiful charming home and gardens. The food was spectacular and Maria the hostess made us feel so welcome, like we had just come home !! <3 :)
The 88th birthday brunch was a tremendous success! Everyone enjoyed the delicious food and drinks, but the kindness and attentiveness of the staff put our experience over the top! I cannot thank them enough!
Outstanding dining experience all around
Food was excellent. Our server and others were available and helpful with suggestions.
Very tasty and attentive service. I wish the noise level were lower (that could be achieved by lowering the music volume).
This is by far my favorite place in Austin. I first went here for a date night and we both fell in love with the place. Now I always make a reservation any time family is in town. It is a must! Super cute place and great ambiance. It is perfect!! Our waiter, Chris was awesome and so was the wine guy, Tim!
I had the worst meal at a restaurant that I've had in Austin since I moved here 8 years ago. Dismal! Even the biscuits were subpar, and for a "Southern" restaurant, that is an affront!
We held our rehearsal dinner (small group of 5) here, and loved it! Be sure to order the punch-- it arrives in a teapot and tastes like heaven. Great service, although I was surprised they wouldn't seat us before our whole party was there... we had made a reservation, showed up 15 minutes early, and spent a good deal of money.
This was my 4th visit.....I think the food is better than it has ever been. Mattie’s is my favorite restaurant in Austin!
Food was pretty bleh
We were looking forward to visiting since the remodel. The restaurant and grounds are beautiful. We were disappointed in the presentation and quality of the food. I think I ordered the wrong thing on the menu (the trout) and it was mediocre. Two at the table had fried chicken and thought it was good just expensive. The other friend had the pork and thought it was delicious. The desserts were just so so. They looked prettier than they tasted. I think the next time we will try brunch. We did enjoy ourselves and the service was great!
We spent another wonderful Sunday brunch at Mattie's this past weekend. This time we brought my parents who loved the atmosphere. The classic old home has been updated perfectly to create a relaxing atmosphere. I would probably recommend the lighting to be a little brighter in the lower dining room. It was a little difficult to read the menu in the dim lighting. I would highly recommend the Salmon appetizer and definitely the French toast.
Thank you for creating a warm and relaxing dining experience!!
It’s a beautiful setting. I’ve been twice and the food has been excellent both times. The servers are attentive. It can be a little loud, but I did not find it distracting.
King Salmon was so small but place was great. Staff was awesome. Great drinks in the downstairs bar. Try the homemade Fireball!
Wonderful dining experience for a birthday celebration. Chris was very attentive. The entire staff made it a great experience. The food was impeccable and the portions perfect. Had a very enjoyable time.
I enjoy Mattie’s so much more than the original Green Pastures. The facelift it received was much needed now making it a truly lovely and enjoyable place to dine. Whether you’re having drinks at the bar or gathering for group dinner, it’s a perfect setting. The food is delicious and they have good wine and cocktail selections. I can’t wait to sit out on the patio for dinner once the weather warms up - so magical.
I've been for brunch a few times and have recommended it to many friends, but every time I've gone, I've thought "hrm, the service could be better." But this past weekend, I went for dinner for the first time, and it happened to be to celebrate my birthday. They knew it was a birthday dinner and it was our worst experience there yet. They sat us at a throwaway table wedged between two others, when there were other two-tops available, and our waiter could not have been less attentive. He had a few other tables nearby, but he would walk right past us, ignoring our needs. We ended up not staying for dessert, even though it was my birthday dinner, because it was just so annoying. We requested the check, he brought it at 9:06pm, my husband was holding his credit card to hand it over, the waiter (Chris) ignored/didn't see it, set the check down, and didn't come back to pick it up until 9:15pm. It was infuriating. Our table had been cleared so it wasn't like he thought we were still picking.
I could see where they might pride themselves on a relaxed dining experience that doesn't rush you out, which would be lovely. But it wasn't just the check that took forever. We would need something and try to catch Chris' eye, and he would consistently make bad decisions, like filling another table's water from the bottle on their table instead of taking our orders when we'd been sitting with our menus for 10 minutes. And since I've had meh service there before, I'm inclined to believe this is the fault of Mattie's, not the individual servers.
After that experience, Mattie's is crossed off our list. It's unfortunate because it's a beautiful setting and the food is good, but nope.
We had an outstanding meal combined with excellent service. I highly recommend the biscuits and shrimp and grits for appetizers. The trout and pork tenderloin entrees were very good. I suggest saving room for the Bananas Foster Bread Pudding and the Chocolate Ice Box Cake and last but not least finish up Milk Punch.
An Austin tradition, with a fresh new face. Elegant old house that has welcomed Austin visitors for decades, has been updated for current tastes. Service was superb, great bar and wine list. Wonderful place for those special occasions.
The food at Mattie's started out great but seems to be in decline. My first visit in July of 2017 I was blown away by everything, the space, the staff and the food. I've been back several times since and the food continues to be less impressive. The space is so undeniably gorgeous that I will continue to go to there for cocktails and to show people an Austin gem, but likely won't be eating there for a while until they get their food back on track.
Amazing group dinner with friends. Everyone left impressed. Loved the fried chicken and the duck. Wine service was outstanding.
Good food but mediocre service and brutal noise level! We are long-time fans of Green Pastures and were eager to try the new incarnation. We went there with friends for a special anniversary celebration. The food was creative and the renovations are admirable. However the service was harried and frequently lacking. We got our own drinks from the bar and never were even offered a peek at a wine list. Warm water was our beverage of “choice” that evening. It was on a Thursday during the holiday season and several large parties seemed more than they could handle. General atmosphere was that of a frat party! Sadly we won’t be giving it another try. Clearly it is for a younger group! Again food was good as well as creative. Other restaurants in Sustin do it better with a much better atmosphere.
Food is good but not exceptional. It is classified as Southern food but not really.
staff was rude. table not ready when we arrived. got sick that night from the food. BUT beautiful location! just gorgeous.
Great vegan options - the cauliflower is SO yummy!
Green Padtures was a great restaurant but the new version has list the IMDb Austin character. High price for mediocre food. Disappointing
Wait staff felt like uninterested college students; not knowledgeable about the menu, unprofessional and slow
Good food with great service at a beautiful location. We ordered a handful of things and the shrimp and grits were amazing so was the cauliflower side. The fried chicken was good but a bit on the dry side, not the best I'd ever had but really good, the spinach with the fried chicken was great!!
Service was great, all of the staff was very attentive and nice.
We look forward to coming back and trying Mattie's again when the weather is warmer and we can sit outside.
The bar is my favorite room to eat in, and often the quieter option.
We were traveling during the snowfall of 12/7 which had us arrive in stages for our 7pm reservation. The host staff was very accommodating and let us wait in the bar until we were ready, quickly adjusting our party of 5 to 4 when someone could not make it. Great drinks, food and atmosphere! What a wonderful job was done with the renovation.
The restaurant is really cute old and nice house.
I like the feeling of the restaurant and service but food wasn’t that great. I wouldn’t say everything was because I didn’t have try everything . I ordered roast chicken and my friend had steak . It came out less than 10 mins . My roast chicken (10min) was tender but I can taste it different than roast chicken. It’s like they had been cooked awhile ago and pan seared before serving. And steak was chewy and ugly presentation. Side order was grilled broccolini ,but was not grilled and has no taste but salty.
I did like the ambiance of the restaurant.
I went there for brunch, which is typically a long and leisurely meal on a Sunday afternoon. We sat down at 1 pm and ordered 5 items, 2 of which were from the starter section of the menu. All 5 dishes were on the table at once and got cold quickly. Very frustrating and our meal was over by 1:30. Not the kind of brunch experience I'm looking for and definitely won't return.
Food was very good. Small portions for the prices but good. Served hot and quickly.
Since this was a get-together with out of town friends I chose Green Pastures as a special place to be, not just to eat. To that end I would suggest:
Offer some history, even a card to read at the table. Don't assume everyone knows.
We would like to have been able to see more of the house. Maybe this isn't possible but it would be nice.
I would have liked to have been given some seating options, even the choice of inside vs outside. I know you're busy but I made reservations near 2 months ago and there were no options offered at that time and we were the early seating. As the dining room got very noisy and it was a nice day we would have preferred outside.
And most important to me, please ask the wait staff to NOT bust-in in the middle of a sentence. Few things annoy me more. People come there to visit and talk and a waitress rushing up and cutting the speaker off in mid sentence (which happened several times) really brings down the whole place. Please ask staff to wait a bit, the speaker will finish their sentence then we'll turn our attention to her. If staff cannot spare the 5 seconds needed for a smooth transition then hire more staff. I expect such rushed service at Chili's but not Green Pastures . Thank you.
What a great place to visit for brunch on a friends trip to Austin! The location is very cool with the history, trees, and peacocks! We were also very impressed with the quality of all the food!
