In the Victorian mansion Green Pastures, Mattie’s does Southern food and a great brunch in Bouldin Creek.
Great brunch place. I’m always worried about how baby/kid friendly restaurants are, but they accommodated space for our baby well. Can’t wait to return with more family.
Food was excellent! Salmon tartare and the fried chicken Benedict were on point. The brioche French toast was okay.
Love this place.
Beautiful place and great service
I had a great dining experience, as usual, at Mattie’s. Unfortunately, my date and I had too many appetizers at a large event we hosted at Mattie’s earlier that evening and we didn’t each much of our dinner. We basically asked that all of our delicious entree and sides and appetizers be put in to-go bags. After finishing a nice bottle of wine we went home. The next morning as we looked forward to our leftovers we realized we had someone else’s to-go food instead of our own. An innocent mistake. The Manager called me back and corrected the situation after he was made aware of it. Couldn’t be happier with the great service and wonderful restaurant. Hope to keep going back and doing more events there.
Well restored location with excellent food. Service was a little slow and all the menu items were not available (we had two items we selected which were not available).
However the experience was very good and we will be going back.
Choices were good (we are pescatarian) and well prepared. Where our choices were not available they worked with us to present something satisfactory.
Friends visiting from out of town
Had to ask server if they had any specials or Happy Hour server did not know and had to ask. Server did not offer the opportunity to purchase a second drink at happy hour prices . They also changed the wine and charged more without notifying the guest before serving it, because the happy hour wine was not offered after happy hour. dinner portions small, duck was hidden in a salad, chicken dry and no flavor. Roasted Brussels sprouts were excellent. Service slow and inattentive.
Another terrific dining experience at Mattie's. Biscuits were to die for, king salmon entree was impeccably well prepared, side order of Brussel sprouts was other worldly, and cheesecake for dessert was delicious. Music was a tad loud, but the overall ambiance, beautiful setting, attentive service, and outstanding food more than made up for it. We had a delightful evening.
I went here with a group of my friends for a casual dinner. Our server was amazing, very attentive and funny! The food was terrific and the ambiance was picturesque. It definitely does not feel like your average Austin restaurant. Highly recommend.
Showed up at 7:00 pm last Saturday for our reservation. The hostess told us our table was not ready, so we could go to any of the 2 bars and have a drink while we waited. The downstairs one was full, so we decided to go upstairs. We found 2 spots. We were immediately greeted by a stressed bartender who asked us to wait a second while he had some other drinks ready. After a while he asked us –again, super stressed- what did we want. My husband ordered a Market punch for 2. After a few minutes, the bartender told us that he probably didn’t have all the ingredients so he would have to go downstairs –we were making his job difficult- was downstairs packed? That was strike 3 for us, so we stood up and told him, not to worry. We went downstairs. After a while, we finally got our punch. By then it was almost 7:20/7:25 and nobody went to get us. My husband had to go see the hostess, because they completely forgot about us. The meal was ok, the waiters at the table were nice, but if you ask me, what am I going to remember about Mattie’s? Their service. And believe me, it was not good.
We've been to Mattie's before, and every time the food has been wonderful, the service not so much. On this occasion, the service was excellent, and the entire experience was what we've hoped for. Top notch!
Exceptional. From start to finish, exceptional. Will return.
Delightful - gorgeous grounds with wandering peacocks. Beautiful historic house. Service and food were superb - sort of a refined southern comfort food. Even the music - an interesting quiet selection of Texas music - was perfect. Very relaxing. We had a great time!
The food is always great. The staff was very accommodating when we needed to add one more guest. My favorite place in Austin for dinner.
We are extremely lucky in Austin to have many great restaurants. I was a fan of Green Pastures, loved the menu , the venue and the service. A group went this week to celebrate a friend. All having visited the previous restaurant were a little underwhelmed. We each tried a variety of entrees from the menu. Of course the food was okay, not great. The standout was the fried chicken and burger. For me and I can't speak for the rest of the group, I don't want to go to a fine restaurant at dinner for fried chicken or a burger. The restaurant and grounds are still beautiful and the service great. But, with all the wonderful restaurants in town, it's not enough for me to return.
Service was bad but food was very good.
We had brunch with a group of 8 and everyone loved their food and service. The ambience is perfect and we had great service. Lovely place and I recommend it highly!
Funk old plantation home with a wonderful staff and cook. Everything done well and staff will make you comfortable
Birthday and engagement were not acknowledged but all other aspects of the meal were good.
Great atmosphere and amazing food! Perfect for a big group!
I booked a reservation for Saturday to celebrate Mother's Day early while my daughter was in town. We arrived early for out 5:00 PM reservation but were not seated until almost 5:20 PM because the restaurant was not opened and they were still cleaning glasses.
Our server was excellent and he nearly saved the evening. Nothing but kudos for him. The food, for the most part, was very good. We loved the Akaushi Ribeye--it was excellent. The Yukon pommes puree, buttermilk biscuits, and grilled Spanish octopus were also very good. From a food standpoint, the only dish that was subpar was the brussels sprouts side dish. It was so mushy and lukewarm that it felt (and tasted) like we were eating something that was microwaved--simple unpleasant .
I only gave a rating of good because I do not understand why we would need to wait when we had a reservation. At no time did the hostess offer us anything to drink--not even water. Simply poor service and unacceptable for the price that we paid for this dinner when there are other options available.
Delicious and delightful!
We had a lovely evening celebrating our wedding anniversary. The dinner was delicious. Very attentive wait staff. Wish it had been a little quieter.
Thought it was a very unique atmosphere and glad we tried but not for us. Pretty pretentious and expensive although the selections were unique and food was good. I’d possibly try again for a brunch if they had a buffet or several selections to feel a better value. Seems like such a nice place to feel a little more relaxed, but it’s just one of those places you go if you don’t mind spending ALOT of money.
The food and wine were great! We especially loved the crispy cauliflower!
Also our server, Christopher, was very attentive. Our party included three generations and we all had a wonderful evening.
May 5th 2018. This was a great night. The ambiance was unbelievable. We started our evening off with drinks in the downstairs bar. Small but very inviting. For our dining experience we sat outside on the porch and the view was superb. The food and service was excellent and they gave us plenty of time between courses to enjoy the evening. The peacocks were a delight to watch and the fireflys were definitely a pleasant surprise. The staff were all very helpful and friendly which made our evening even better. Thanks to all of them.
Very good and enjoyable
Drinks were tasty
Food tasted great
It was a beautiful day, my hubby surprised me for my birthday , it was like we step back into time. The house was beautiful inside and outside.
The grounds were beautiful as well.Especially the peacocks.
Excellent food and atmosphere. Love it every time I go. Dessert was "eh"...everything else on point.
This was our first visit since Green Pastures transformed into Mattie’s and we enjoyed it thoroughly.
The service was completely professional, but friendly and easy. The salads were enormous as well as fresh and yummy with a few surprises.
Two of us had the fried chicken—and there’s a reason Mattie’s is known for it. It was super—richly seasoned, crispy, juicy, tender white meat with a full thigh/leg too. (We both took home a quarter chicken which was terrific cold the next day.) The consistency of the mashed potatoes was weird, but they were still very tasty. One friend got the fish (snapper?) which looked delicious but a little skimpy compared to the portions of the chicken.
The wine menu is really steep. The majority of the bottles are well over $75, with many A LOT HIGHER ($250-$2,000+) which seems out of touch with the reasonable (although still pricey) prices on the menu.
I shared the simple ice cream dessert with my friend. Really good flavor.
We’re happy the charming old house, giant trees, beautiful grounds, and peacocks have been restored and maintained. We’ll go back.
My new favorite restaurant. Sitting outside on the wraparound porch eating Sunday brunch on a beautiful April day was sublime. The huge oak trees, the peacocks, and such a treat to see white peacocks who will pose for pictures! Best birthday ever!
Pretty setting , nostalgic, food good. Cocktails could be colder. Use more ice. Dessert was underwhelming. Would try it again.
This place was delicious and the service was unmatched!
My wife and I went to celebrate our anniversary and had brunch there. The Mattie's breakfast plate and pastrami and eggs were excellent. I recommend dining on the porch outside if the weather is good - have a great view and can see the peacocks hanging out in the trees. This is a great place for a romantic dining experience. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Ribs were great! Chicken was good. As was the cauliflower & both desserts!
The food was wonderful and the overall experience was pleasant. However we were dinning for a birthday. I mentioned that it was a birthday on my reservation and again to the waiter in person. We ordered a dessert for the occasion and they did not even include a candle. I did not expect this nice of a restaurant to sing or comp the dessert but a little extra touch would have been nice for the occasion. Ended up being slightly disappointed at the end of the evening.
Great food and very cool spot. Peacocks add a nice keep Austin weird touch.
Our waiter Christopher was awesome. The hostess & restaurant manager were very welcoming & friendly. It was a fantastic experience.
Mattie's is a gem. Food was perfect, service was perfect, the ambiance was perfect. I guess what I'm saying is: it's perfect. Not to mention the peacocks that live on the grounds which adds to the delight.
As a long-time Austinite, I’m so glad to see Green Pastures continue its tradition of excellence. Great place.
