French
Set in the heart of Soho, L’Escargot, established in 1927, is London’s oldest and most renowned French restaurant. It has been host to stars of stage and screen including Coco Chanel, Maurice Chevalier, John Geilgud, Ralph Richardson, and was reputedly one of Princess Diana’s favourites. L'Escargot is now under the ownership of Brian Clivaz and Laurence Isaacson, who between them, have been involved in some of London’s most iconic restaurants and member's clubs. James Tyrrell is now the Head Chef and his dishes celebrate classic french cooking with a modern and healthy twist. Snails unsurprisingly are the speciality of the house; the dining room pays homage to proper French bourgeois cooking and offers exceptional value. L’Escargot has been voted London’s best French restaurant and has an excellent wine list. We are delighted to say that we are dog friendly.

We took up an offer they had on the Chateaubriand steak and loved it! The interiors are tastefully decorated and the staff was attentive. They brought us a few birthday treats of their own initiative, which was a very pleasant surprise. Thanks Escargot!

Service needs to be more attentive for restaurant of this reputation and level. A slight sense of everyone going through the motions. Apart from that it was pretty good if not absolutely sensational.

Best French cuisine in London. There's a reason this is still regarded as a Soho institution -its unsurpassable in terms of food, service and understated elegance. Bravo!

It’s our second visit and again we were very impressed and our choice of escargot 🐌 followed by Chateau Briand was excellent and would highly recommend this restaurant for pre theatre or a romantic evening.

We come to L’escargot every time we visit from Adelaide- it was good but not quite as attentive service as usual. Food was v generous. Tarte au citron superb.

Everything was perfect for my birthday dinner in l’Escargot; the food, the ambiance and the service until I was told that I have to wait the cab that order outside of the restaurant, on the street, as they were closed. Never treated so disrespectful by any restaurant.

We have dined at L'Escargot a few times. Their traditional quality and service is sometime's just what we want. The menu is fine contemporary but reassuringly free from gimmick. We like L'Escargot very much and will visit at least once a year pre-show.

Excellent location, fantastic food and ambience, old time London charm & quality just away from the hustle & bustle of the main Soho drag. Went for the weekend special menu - all courses were delicious, perfect in portion size, bursting with flavours. Quite easily spent a couple of hours away from the sun, crowds, madness in a quiet idle of Soho.

Well spaced tables where you had plenty of room and did not feel that you were part of fellow dinners conversations. Food while not exceptional was very good and dependable bistro fare, this being the second time we have dined there. Service was friendly and overall competent and importantly not up itself. However, we were charged £30 for a £28 bottle of wine which we did not notice until after we had left and looked at the bill. A very very minor error which obviously is not a deal breaker. For the money a positive experience and we will return. Would certainly recommend as competent cooking in a pleasant environment at a reasonable price.

This is our first time at this restaurant. The food is good but expensive. ONE MAJOR THING WE DO NOT LIKE IS PETS BEING ALLOWED IN RESTAURANTS, ANY THEY WERE BARKING. If we wanted that we would have gone to Battersea Dog Home. I do not think anywhere in OP that they mention they allow pets. Shame on you.

Feels as if this is one of the last great restaurants of Soho . Fantastic ambiance plenty of space . Low key knowledgable service . Amazing value set menu if you are eating between 12.00 and 7.00 which we often do pre theatre. Food quality and presentation is excellent. The wine choices are good but could be improved in terms of quality without increasing costs. Overall really really excellent.

A classic French meal, great food, impeccable service and a brilliant deal. We opted for the Chateaubriand for two, which came with two Proseccos, salad and delicious fries. Perfectly cooked, delicious steak. So good!

A get together over lunch with a couple of friends. The wines were nice, service friendly as ever, the snails were very good indeed. One of our party had the confit duck which he said was great, and another the risotto which he said was also good. Unfortunately I had the cod goujons and frites, as did my partner, and they were dry and the frites not very good, like something I could have bunged in the oven from M&S. That said it was a great lunch and we will be back, but will choose something different.

Very expensive for what it was eg a £68 chateaubriand for 2 consisted of exactly 6 modest sized slices of beef. "Discretionary service charge" was a higher than normal 14.5%, which is ambitious in itself, but the service was no better than average. Wine list not great. Delightful room and ambience but not a great experience.

Food was good but not amazing. Staff friendly but not as attentive as you might expect for the price. Toilets dirty and cramped.

Pistachio soufflé dessert was great though and the restaurant feels intimate enough. Wouldn’t tell people to steer clear but not top of my list of recommendations either...

It is 30 years since I have been there and it has changed a lot! However the food is still excellent and the staff and service were great. The food was very good and we had steak, guinea fowl and duck. All dishes were very good and considering the reputation of the restaurant the bill was reasonable.
