Pretty good. I would not say it is any better than El Gaucho, Ascend, Metropolitan Grill, Ruth's Chris or any of the other steakhouses I have been to, however, it does come at a premium. I had two reservations. A table for two for my daughter and her boyfriend to celebrate her 18th birthday and a table for adults. Young people's table with no cocktails came in at $310. Adults weighed in at a whopping $1,375. What I do not understand is their 20% surcharge. I am not unsophisticated and neither were other members of my party. We were all unsure if there is also a tipping expectation on top of the 20% surcharge. They make it clear that the restaurant retains the 20%, not the servers. So it makes for a confusing and awkward situation. Adding another 20% to a $1,375 bill is not insignificant. It is my opinion that if you need an extra 20% to pay "competitive" wages then just build it into the menu prices and leave it at that. Or explain what the gratuity expectations are for this situation. I have not seen this as a common practice at other fine dining restaurants in Seattle.

The service was slow, had to stare down the server a few times to have her come around to order drinks and or food. One steak was blue rare versus medium rare. It typically should take 2-4 minutes for a cook up but it took about 12 minutes or more. By the time the steak came out I had finished my 2 side dishes and couldn’t even finish my $90 steak. Additionally, the table facing the window was blinding and too bright. Would be nice to ensure the ambiance including lighting is good. I would have preferred to move to a booth that was further away from the window. An off putting item was our table ordered 4 Peppercorn steak sauces and I wished the server would have said or recommended (as many servers do this) that 1 sauce could probably be good for 2-4 steaks. That was a complete waste of money.

To me, this is definitely a special occasion place. The menu offerings, wine list, service, food quality and execution are all 5 star. It can get pricey, but in my opinion, it is well worth it. We came on a Monday after Father's Day and it was surprisingly busy, yet quiet. Brett Callis was our table captain and along with Tony, the service was absolutely impeccable. I appreciated their flexibility in preparing half portions from the menu to accommodate our party of five. Steaks were flawlessly executed and the Bananas Foster was the perfect end of our meal. Scott was an excellent sommelier and he gave us some great advice on a Night Owl red blend. Highly, highly recommended.

Our overall experience was very nice. The food was very good. Our waiter was very helpful with drink and food suggestions. Our only complaint was the front end ladies. We had to wait for our reserved table, and had to check to see if it was ready. When I checked with them the second time, they were like oh your table has been ready, They could plainly see us standing out front but didn't acknowledge that it was ready. I just feel this could of been handled a little better.

The greeters at the front desk were unfriendly, but they did their job. The bartender was aloof and went through the motions and hinted that he would get a better tip if we paid our bar bill before going into the dining room. Our waiter was loud and did not keep up with our needs after placing our order. The food took a very long time to arrive after our appetizers. The food was good but not put to our expectations given the high price. The highlight of the evening was the table side service which was very well performed even though it came late. We watched a single customer receive an inordinate amount of attention from numerous staff members and service due to his importance? The desserts were delicious but took a long time to arrive.

Went here for an early pre-Father’s day dinner. Our server was INCREDIBLE and overly accommodating of our rambunctious 18-month old son. The only service recommendation I would make is to the sommelier who treated us as though we had never drank wine before - reminding us which glass had what wine in it - despite the fact the two bottles were ones we brought with us! Overall good experience - food was excellent, ambiance is a bit bougie for our preferences, but would go back if we’re not able to get into Bis on Main (a more relaxed vibe).

Went to dinner with 2 colleagues last night. Started the night with cocktails, the deviled eggs and the crab cakes. Everything was perfect up to that point. For dinner, two of us ordered ribeyes and the third ordered the filet. The steaks were flavorless, and very stringy, almost like a pot roast. Ordered three sides as well, fries, potato purée and creamed spinach. The sides were all very lifeless and disappointing. Came to this restaurant because locals referred it, but honestly was overwhelmingly underwhelmed.

So this was my 2nd visit to John Howie. I brought an out of town guest and I’ve go to say I was sorely disappointed this time. Everyone was super polite, and we had a few issues during our evening that management tried their best to make up for and IMHO they fell short, especially based on my previous experience and their reputation. Our drinks and appetizers were prompt and correct. The entrees took quite a bit longer than I would have expected. My steak was wildly over cooked. It took a bit of time for our captain to return and ask how the steak was. He took my steak, and along with it my utensils so even if I wanted to continue with the side dishes I was unable. He said he’d get the steak re-fired “immediately”. After another 25 minutes my dining companion was nearly done with her food, the manager came over and gave me a second glass of wine, complimentary. The captain noticed I still hadn’t received my steak and uttered a very audible sigh of disgust as he realized it. My steak finally showed up 10 minutes later and they refreshed one of our sides. The steak was still mildly over cooked, and at this point I’m just going to eat it. They also comped dessert for us. So like I said I think they did about everything they could to make up, and I appreciated the effort, everything fell just shot of expectations. Based on this experience it’ll be a long while before I return.

Super disappointed - wait staff were condescending and detached. Drinks orders were forgotten, wrong sauces brought, steaks cooked to wrong level of "done" Waited an hour for food - that wasn't too big a deal, expected a wait. Biggest gripe is they are actually running a scam of sorts - they added a 20% service charge to our table of 4 (fine in principle - thats what I typically tip wherever I go) But it wasn't made clear up front this was going to happen - again, not a real deal breaker - I was probably going to tip close to that much even though our main server was rude, the others helping were really nice. Issue is this - on the bill, it says John Howie takes 100% of the service charge and and uses it to pay their servers and tipped staff a living wage - Staff don't keep tips. I applaud that in principle - BUT - basically they are lying about the actual prices of the food - AND they don't give the servers the tips. 20% turns a $90 steak into a $108 steak - thats the ACTUAL price - if they just slap a 20% mandatory fee on top. That's 100% margin for them on the 20% - they don't use extra ingredients, they don't pay extra wages. It's a bait and switch - oh your meal will actually cost 20% more than we said it would when you ordered it and also, you don't get to reward (or not) the server that actually helped you. We just put extra 20% on and put it into our pockets until we pay our staff... Couple of things to wrap up this grumble - 1) I tip 20% as standard - but you took this without asking or informing up front (even when a bigger table of 8 or more has a standard automatic service fee added, it's made known up front) - AND you don't give it as standard to your servers. 2) Your food wasn't great, OR your chefs dont really pay attention to what is ordered - maybe spend less time gushing over the 3 types of salt you brought to the table and more time ensuring the steak is cooked to order. 3) Some of your waiters are jerks

Thank you for the feedback. I would like to follow up with your server and the dining room manager. Would you please provide reservation name and date? Did you have an opportunity that evening to speak with a manager? If an issue occurs we strive to correct it in the moment. With regards to the service charge. Our staff receives an hourly wage plus commissions. Under this model it allows us to compensate employees at a higher level than in previous years and be a leader in the provisions of wages and benefits. A 20% service charge is included on each check. John Howie Steak retains 100% of the service charge. Our professional service team receives industry leading compensation. This above statement can be found on the menu, on the check and there is an insert inside the check presenter. Again, thank you for the feedback. If you would like to discuss the service charge further please call the restaurant 425-440-0880 Best, Tim L.

The prices were high for the food quality when compared with competing local high-end steakhouses. Service was excellent but that was expected with a fixed service charge. Noise was on the high end, and we had a child in the next table coughing frequently which dampened the ambiance. If we return, it might not be for the food.

Nice Steakhouse in Bellevue. A bit difficult to find once you park and try to navigate around the complex. Service was good. Drinks were good. Both had steaks, which were good. Lobster mashed were good. Mushrooms were good. The Scallop appetizer was a bit lacking for the cost, plus it also hits a huge pet peeve of mine and that is an odd number (3) of said items in a appetizer. Most reservations are 2 tops and 4 tops, so I never understood when there are an odd number present on an appetizer. If it’s 2 people you can both have 2 or if it’s 4 people, who is the one in the group that doesn’t get one? It just causes angst amongst the group at the table and makes them feel guilty for having one when knowing one person probably wants one but politely declines and misses out. (Just my view on that issue) besides that the dish was good. Overall, it was a good experience. Would I return?… Mmmm… jury is still out on my decision. Seeing as I mostly said good about everything, however with their price point I feel I should have described all greats and it didn’t hit that level.
