Founding Farmers - DC
Nice meal with a friendly server. Noise pretty loud. . Food delicious and waiter attentive . Brought our orders as we wanted them
I don’t usually leave reviews but when I do they are almost always good. This must be the first poor review I’ve left in 5 years (so that’s saying something). My wife is Vegan and we picked this restaurant with it’s meatless menu (it comes up as a vegan friendly restaurant on all of the searches). Unfortunately when we arrived the waiter was really rude. He pointed out that all of the bread was using butter and that the “meatless” products were cooked on the same grill as the meat. My wife is sooo quiet and polite but he really seemed to not like her choice of diet. He then reaffirmed that there was basically nothing on the menu for her and then smirked.... We were all mortified. My daughter spoke up and asked for the manager who then came and apologised. He offered to cook the meatless dish in a pan for her (and that they did in fact have butter/dairy free) but by then she felt so uncomfortable that we had to leave. The waiter really humiliated her - and I’ve never experienced this before such outward hostility. The manager was very apologetic but I’m pretty disappointed that they would let the waiter off without coming back and apologising. The waiter seemed quite pleased with himself until confronted by my daughter and even then made no attempt (he really didn’t seem to care). Especially after the owners have worked so hard to come across as farm fresh and friendly (and they market as vegan friendly...). It really ruined my wife’s night and I can’t understand why he would act this way. In shock.....and incredibly hurt....
Nice nitch, but a bit disappointing. I walked in at 7:45 had a reservation for 8:30. People who put their names after me sat before me. They sat me at 8:25. Waitress took my order after 10 minutes of just sitting at the table. Took 30min for my appetizer to come, my drinks came after the food arrived. Appetizers where nothing special was just ok, I was expecting something much better with all the great reviews. From when I sat to when my main course arrived was 1 hour. But the ribs where fall off the bone great.
We received an incredibly rude greeting by the hostess who insisted we did not have a reservation, when we did. She was dismissive and notwithstanding my producing an OpenTable confirmation she made no effort to find our name. After several failed efforts she finally repeated my name and said "oh here it is." She was busy but I don't recall ever encountering someone more poorly suited to greeting customers. She was both dour and unpleasant. Perhaps it was a bad day.
After that things improved markedly. We were seated at a comfortable booth and had tremendous service from a friendly waiter with a dry sense of humor. Our food was terrific. We had the Impossible Burger and Ahi tuna salad, which were fantastic. The bar area was active for a Sunday evening, if a little loud. Overall, we were able to overcome the bad start and really enjoyed the food, service, and ambience.
Food was great, service was meh.
Love this place! Make reservations if you don't like to wait. Food is wonderful, service is great!
Founding Farmers was the perfect spot for brunch. Everything we ate was absolutely incredible and very clearly made with fresh ingredients. I don't believe I would come for lunch/dinner because that freshness comes with a higher price tag, but the brunch was the perfect balance. Servers were also friendly even during a busy brunch environment.
Food was delicious. It was very busy, but we had a reservation and they took us right on time.
A really nice spot, but honestly not worth the price. I got the veggie egg white scramble, and it was something I could have made at home. The toast was stale, and my friend's pancakes weren't outstanding. The beignet appetizer was the only true winner here. Waitress was super super nice and attentive!
Too busy to be enjoyable. We showed up on time for a reservation and still had to wait 20 minutes for a table. They're so busy they try to rush you through your meal. There's no point sitting and enjoying the Ambiance because it's too loud; it's like eating on a conveyor belt -they're just trying to move you along to turn over the table . Save your time and your money go eat someplace else
Pretty restaurant. Food was good but arrived cold. Server was nice but super busy and couldn’t get condiments, more coffee or check.
Had a reservation but it seemed as though people who walked in without reservations were getting seated before us.
Always love the food. The service could have been better this time. My favorite place to have breakfast. The chicken and waffles are fantastic.
Disappointing. Really slow service. Had to send food back for undercooked, took 20 minutes to return. Will not be going back.
Braised beef short rib was amazing! I sat at the bar. Bartenders were attentive and friendly. I would definitely go back.
Clearly this is the hottest place in DC or at least in the GWU area. Was packed and rightly so, food was amazing as well as the dessert (beignets!)...
The food at Founding Farmers was incredible, but service was lackluster and it was incredibly loud.
My friend and I had a great time at founding farmers. The portions sizes really filled us up and we’re worth the price. Our waitress, Bernadette, was amazing with her service even while it was busy.
Food was not up to normal Founding Farmers quality
It is delicious! Good.
Had reservations but made us wait 20 minutes for a table. Food was very good though.
I had a reservation for 11:30 AM and I had to wait for 30 min to get my table
This is my 7th time back. The only thing that made it less great was just bad service. Missing order items requested, asked for a mojito that came late and was undrinkable. Asked for grits and French toast but got two things of fruit. Ham was over cooked. 😥
Food ok. Service was disgraceful. Waiter couldnt have been less interested if he tried. He got the order wrong twice, had the nerve to charge for the missing items even though they arrived 5 minutes after we finished the meal. He talked over us when we tried to explain why we were unhappy and then he walked off while we were talking in mid sentence. Appalling.
Great food. Definitely make a reservation. Friendly service.
Out of town
We make sure to come here every time we travel to DC! Best breakfast hands down.
This restaurant made our entire trip!! My family of 8 enjoyed a wonderful breakfast!! Food was fantastic, our server was great!! If we would have been able to get another reservation we would have gone back for dinner too!! Highly recommend!!
Every single thing we tried was DELICIOUS. Their homemade whiskey was the best thing I’ve ever had, though!!
American friends in town from their overseas posting, wanted to give them a hearty American meal, and Founding Farmers filled the bill, literally. A bit noisy, the music was too loud, and a little delay in getting seated at our reservation time. Service was excellent.
Definitely recommend reservations.. very popular and rightly so. Excellent service... loved the corn bread starter... truly outstanding. I had the Impossible meat loaf.. (first time with meat substitute) thought it was excellent... Also had salad with chicken.. very good as well... Finished the night with carrot cake dessert... to die for. We highly recommend the Founding Farmers.
Service was very good. Food was good but a bit pricey. Definitely must have reservations.
Very loud, packed and busy. Food and drink were almost worth the price. Staff was patient and friendly.
Quick service and great food. Never disappoints!!
I ate here a couple months ago and it was better. This time the corn bread was good but nothing special. That really describe the whole meal. The Mac and cheese with apples and ham was good but seemed like something I could make it home. Chicken n waffles again just good. Not sure the long wait is still worth it
Great service. Food was great. Everyone in my party enjoyed their selection. Will visit again if I’m in the area.
We love this restaurant and it wasn’t my first time at this location. However they were unable to accommodate my disable partner whom was also in a wheelchair. To start , the automatic door was inoperable and we struggled to just get in for the 10:30am reservation. Upon checking in we waited a short time only to be escorted down the narrow aisles to an elevator for upstairs seating . Once at the small and very low table, we realized and had to mention to our hostess the table was far too low for someone in a wheelchair to dine at (it must have been obvious to her as well). Although she made an effort to find another table it required a bit of disruption to other guests and unwelcomed attention for us. Our food and service was great but I wouldn’t consider this restaurant given its limited wheelchair accessibility.
The food was excellent, the speciality cocktails were wonderful and the service was spot on!! Will definitely come back next time we are in town.
Based on our experience the hype and restaurant are overrated. The food was good but service was awful. Waiter only checked on our table once after food was served. My chicken and waffles did not come with any syrup and my wife ordered the reuben melt and it had no sauce. We asked for the sauces but did not receive it till the bill came. After the request we saw our waiter standing around multiple times. I had to ask a different waiter for more water because ours ran out. We were excited to eat here because we had heard good things. Overall very disappointed.
Food is good but it’s pointless to get a reservation if they still make you wait after your scheduled time even when the entire party is there
