Flour + Water
What Insiders Are Saying
Flour + Water in the Mission will always be one of our all time favorite Italian spots.
Some of the dishes from the tasting menu are really awesome. However, I don't really like those beetroots based ones feel like something is missing. The service needs a lot of improvement, very robotic and fake plus not very hygienic handling cutleries.
Host people and servers were friendly. Love beets but too much pickle flavor in the salad. I ordered bread because I was choking from the vinegar/pickle excess in the salad. Beets would have been great without the dressing. Sumac pasta had too much butter fat for my liking. Noise level was awful. Most diners could not hear each other's conversations.
Totally worth the drive over the Bay Bridge to this hoppin' corner restaurant! We loved every bite and the pasta was absolutely beautiful and perfectly prepared. The service is impeccable, with all hands on deck at all times, making everything run like a well-oiled machine. Nice people - everyone was very friendly! Music is LOUD tho so if you want to have a quiet conversation, maybe this place is a bit noisy.
Food was amazing!
We ordered too much though because we listened to the servers advice. 1 dish per person is plenty. And maybe some 1 app to share. (We were 4)
Also wish they had another bathroom (there’s only one for the entire restaurant)
But the food is so good that nothing else matters!
Music was quite loud, and the selection was sporadic. Food is very salty and rich, and caused my date and I to have a stomach ache. Very tasty, nonetheless.
Great dinner with a friend. Been wanting to come here for years. And it certainly lived up to the hype. Everything was wonderful!
I have been going to Flour and Water for some time now but I think I'll be taking a break from it for a while. First, the service has become more of the type that says, "My, aren't you lucky to be dining here!" At best it was curt (with one exception but he wasn't our server for the evening) and at worst it was condescending. Secondly, I'm just tired of the fact that the music is too loud. They deliberately make this restaurant noisy by keeping the music cranked up every time; this is a deliberate choice on the part of the restaurant manager. Back when the food was excellent and the service was good I was willing to put up with it but those days are gone. Finally, the food just isn't exceptional any more. The food is still good (since we were all sharing we had a relatively large number of dishes) but it's no longer exceptional; heck, I probably wouldn't even call it "very good" any more. Too bad that this restaurant is showing its age.
Flour + Water is my favorite restaurant, no questions asked. The appetizers are good, the pasta is great, and the pizzas are even better (in my opinion). I love the ambience here and always have excellent service.
Recently, the pasta I ordered was too rich for my liking, but other than that everything was incredible. Order a pizza with a farm-fresh egg on top. You won't be disappointed.
my date and i both did the tasting menu. we enjoyed every course and every wine pairing so much! everything was amazing! definitely try the tasting menu - you won’t regret it. we try to go back and try it whenever the tasting menu updates as we enjoy it so much every time. the noise level was perfect - some background noise but quiet enough to have conversation easily.
Food was good, experience as a whole was nice. In regards to value I think the overall value was good but some courses were extremely variant in size which is nice for a multicourse menu but we had a 6 course so it seemed some of the items weren't worth the price. Overall it was a good value.
With a worldly trained palate I can confidently say this is the best pizza in the world. Consistently the most soul soothing meal in town and you can’t go wrong with your meal selections outside of pizza. It’s as though I sent my stomach to get a PhD and develop a menu each time I go to its restaurant. You speak stomach my friend.
We have been following this place on IG as a MUST for our next visit to SF (we will be making a reservation every time we’re in town) the pasta’s, salads, pizza, & customer Service we’re better then we had looked forward to. Our survey was beyond helpful and gracious. Homemade raviolis and a set pasta tasting along with a wine pairing for some extra cash... worth every penny! We will be back in April to finish the other half of the menu. This restaurant is quality at its finest. Thank you
The menu could be broader. Add some protein, roman steak, chicken under a brick..Italian basics . Too little variety in the menu. Essentially nothing in the gluten free/ dairy free cuisine categories.
I am from the east coast and have been to San Francisco twice, ever and each time I have been to flour and water each time. I’d come back again absolutely!
Everything we ate was absolute perfection. Such a treat.
The pasta tasting was fantastic
I had the best carrot dish I have ever had in my entire life. It was simply outstanding. Roasted carrots with some sort of delicious parmesan lighter then air custard.
The pastas are always excellent.
Portion seem a bit bigger then in the past but the $ seems higher. I'll gladly pay more for a bigger portion.
Loved it! Had the pasta tasting with wine pairings. Servers were very knowledgeable about the different wine pairings. We had a great experience.
After hearing so much about Flour & Water, I knew I had to try. I scored a reservation on Christmas Eve at 8:45. When we showed up a little early the hostess worked her magic and got us seated early. We opted for the tasting menu which was amazing. Multiple pasta courses with layers of flavors that left us craving seconds. The service was approachable and courses paced nicely. I highly recommend you try.
We visited Flour + Water on Christmas Eve, and it was the perfect low-key but welcoming spot to start off the holiday week. We chose the tasting menus - one vegetarian option, one standard - and they were both extraordinary. The courses highlighted different forms of pasta with elegant, flavor intensive preparations. The service was attentive without being intrusive, and our server recommended wines that paired very well with the variety of flavors throughout the meal. Would definitely visit this restaurant again!
We had the tasting menu. It started with a crudo, which was citrusy and fresh. Quite nice. Every dish after that was overly rich and not well put together. In addition to the lackluster taste of the food, we were also extremely surprised at how bad the texture of the pasta was, given this restaurant is known for pasta. One particular course that comes to mind is the tortellini in a broth that tasted like a watered down (bad) French onion soup. Not only was the taste kind of yucky but the tortellini had a weird dried out texture rather than a nice chewy al dente. The dessert was overly sweet and predictably rich. Was a really disappointing dining experience.
Flour and Water is great for a dinner and a movie date. The atmosphere is cozy and romantic. The good is high quality , including the pasta made in house. Couldn’t recommend it enough. Knowledgeable staff, of the menu. Wine bottle prices a little expensive.
Service was very attentive. We opted for the tasting and each course blew us away. We will be back!
Overpriced and food came in stingy portion. Pasta too rich and over salted. Service was good though, but that won’t be enough to lure me back.
Best dinner of my life : )
Great food as always, but the service was rushed in a way that was incredibly obnoxious.
Loved it , service was on point and the food was delish
This was our first time dining at Flour and Water. No doubt we will be back. Great food, servers who knew the menu and answered all questions quite well, good price point. In all, a great value and great meal
Just not wowed. Everything was good, but nothing was like, I have to come back here. This is my second or third time here. The pizza seemed a bit underdone, just a second or two more would have made it much better. The pasta was fine, but just fine. Ended up glad we didn't go for the whole pasta tasting menu. The service was professional but it's kind of weird to have a whole team of servers and no idea who is actually taking care of you--no connection. Going back to the pasta, if I order a rabbit pasta, I hope that it looks meatier than that if rabbit just bounced through it. I want to actually know that it's there. Pasta was appropriately al dente. Good wine list, and appreciated the servers' willingness to give tastes.
Fantastic!! It has become a go to spot for us every time we are in SF.
The restaurant is very good and the service is outstanding. Overall I would recommend it to anyone. The only negative is that the music is VERY LOUD. Very difficult to have a conversation.
Awesome pasta. Just awesome! Completely worth it. A must go in SF. The pizza is good, but the pasta is incredible.
Everything was fantastic and the waitress was accommodating and gave great recommendations. Will definitely be back!
Food was too busy and rich. Portions not very big. Used to be a favorite but I am not rushing back.
The food was absolutely amazing. The pasta dishes are unique and tasty
Excellent service and the food outstanding and consistently top of their game. 🙌🙌🙌
One of the best Italian Dinners ever !
Head about the place from a friend.
I must say....after visiting allot of restaurants, and being a vegetarian, a great place, lots of variety.
The food is amazing !
The food was unreal. The pasta is some of the best I’ve ever had in my life. Please go here, you will thank yourself later.
