Amazing quality of food and service especially given the circumstances of about to move to Tier 3. Can’t thank the staff enough
We've been a few times over the years and it has been a little hit and miss, but we really enjoyed our meal on 18/12/20. The restaurant was Covid-secure, staff were on fine form, and the cooking was the best we have had at L'Ortolan. The potato, fish and pudding (pear-based) courses really stood out, and we enjoyed some excellent wine (a Hungarian white, recommended by the sommelier, was extremely good). The venison course was a little disappointing but otherwise a really good evening. Thanks
We were greeted on our return to L'Ortolan by the wonderful staff who remembered us and made us feel very special. The service was faultless, friendly, informative and we couldn't want for anything. The food as before was exceptional, The Gourmand menu paired with mocktails for me as a non drinker it was a sublime. I was made to feel as special as the drinkers who get to learn all about their beverages from the sommeliers choice...I had a selection of wonderful blends of teas, fruits, cream, non alcoholic herbals all put together by the award winning cocktail creator there. Much better than the usual tall inelegant glass with soda and lime that I usually receive in restaurants.
We were thoroughly spoiled....hours of exquisite food, great service...highly recommended.
The most amazing lunch. Thank you to All the team
We were sorry to see Chef Tom Clarke leave earlier this year as we had many wonderful meals at l'Ortolan. However, Chef James Greatorex is bringing a unique and very different flair to the food. Arctic Char, caviar and white chocolate? Absolutely delicious and this is just the start of a superb culinary journey through the new menus. The mushroom ravioli is to die for and we were sorry that it wasn't on the menu this week; please reinstate it. This restaurant is definitely heading for at least a 2 star status.
One of the best meals I have had a L’Ortolan, and I have been going for 34 years through all the different chefs. I am a pescatarian and every course was excellent.
A real Saturday lunchtime treat - would normally have booked for the evening, but limited availability meant we could only get lunchtime. But actually enjoyed it more
Perfect place, great food and wine. Wine pairing is outstanding
This was our annual Christmas trip to L'Ortolan. As usual we weren't disappointed. Great food, wine & service. We opted for the Menu Gormand with accompanying wines. Not cheap but very enjoyable. Overall great experience!
It's a great experience to dine in a fine dining establishment, and the service was friendly and informal. We sampled the vegetarian and vegan menus, with a sommelier who introduced us to a range of wines and made some excellent pairings. The vegetaran and vegan menus were delicious and presented with care. However they lacked nutritional value ( most important in vegan and vegetarian cooking) and imagination . There was no use of nuts or seeds, no special oils used for dressing, and no beans or pulses. There was little imagination with the vegetable used, three of my courses involved celeriac, there are many more vegetables that would make the experience more interesting. It would have been a good opportunity to introduce homemade vegan cheese, but no such luck.
Generally speaking a lovely meal. Decided to pay extra for fresh truffle on a dish which was as flavoursome as grated cardboard which was a shame. Very expensive so, although lovely, perhaps not value for money when taken as a whole experience.
Wonderful service , fabulous food . It’s a real treat to dine there . The staff are so welcoming , they make it a special night .
They were aware it was our wedding anniversary and delivered a beautiful suprise with our dessert course.
Nothing was too much trouble
. I’m looking forward to our next visit .
Had the 7 course tasting menu, with accompanying wines. The food was excellent, the wines were good and the sommelier had great knowledge.
Compliant with COVID regulations that didn’t ruin ambience. Service excellent. Tasting menu delicious would recommend and will be back again.
Very enjoyable evening with friends. Went for the 7 course tasting menu and accompanying wine. Delicious!
Celebrating family 30th Birthdays. We all had the Menu Prestige which was amazing and the chef accommodated a food allergy with excellent alternatives. Fantastic way to try dishes you ordinarily might not have chosen and every course was well explained. My Daughter and I had the wine flight to accompany the menu and Marco, the Sommelier was extremely knowledgeable and interesting. Again we tried some wines we would otherwise never have considered. All in all a great evening, the staff were very attentive and coped brilliantly with all the Covid restrictions.
I wanted to experience a Michelin stared restaurant so treated myself to lunch at L'Ortolan. From the moment I arrived the team were attentive and made everything feel special.
The atmosphere was relaxing and the food was amazing. Each course was explained in detail by the waiter and built the anticipation for the first bite.
Every course was perfect and a true delight to eat.
I'd recommend L'Ortolan to anyone wanting to treat themselves or someone special
Despite the need to follow COVID avoidance rules the team service was fantastic and food was beautiful, as always
The food was very good. Staff courteous and attentive and the restaurant had a very nice atmosphere
Excellent food and great wines, the only things that has impacted the experience is the way the service has be delivered due to COVID-19 restrictions in restaurants. We were originally down for 7.30pm , after the 10pm curfew I brought it forward to 7pm but now wish we had booked for 6.30pm as the last fifteen minutes was slightly rushed, no fault of the staff just the curfew. So my advice is, if you go for the 7 course then allow a good amount of time.
We had an enjoyable anniversary celebration. The tasting menu and paired wines were all excellent. We were in the conservatory, which was a little cool at first, but warmed up during the evening. Our anniversary was acknowledged with a chocolate message that made dessert particularly special.
Our problem with the service was not the serving waiters but the attitude prevalent when we stated that we did not have smartphones to read the online menus and wine list. The Maitre de was thereafter (in our view) somewhat condescending and appeared to treated us as plague victims to be viewed from a distance!
Superlatives abound - a wonderful experience. We had the Menu Gourmand - sublime, thoughtful cooking reflecting the season. Service was excellent, and supported by a particularly knowledgeable and helpful sommelier. The range of wines by the glass has some interesting bottles, and we recommend that you sample. A destination that is worth seeking out. We will be back soon.
Hello, we had a great meal at the restaurant. Really enjoyed the great food and service. I will definitely return to this gem.
We were slightly disappointed with our visit to L’Ortolan. There was a few elements we thought were just lacking. The decor was really tired and it looked like the last time it was refurbished was the early 2000’s. This is such a shame as the garden and the building, which is Grade II listed are stunning. From our table we could also smell the disinfectant from the loos!
The menus were very annoying as you had to download each one using the QR code (or go to the website) to view them. In total there was about 6 different menus to look at - all on your phone. We thought it cheapened the experience somewhat. An alternative way of doing this in relation to being Covid safe would have been to print the menus each morning and then recycle them after use.
The food and service was good. We could hardly hear what some of the waiters were saying behind the masks- although there’s not much that can be done about that right now.
Would we go again? Probably not. It just didn’t wow us.
Food was lovely, wine pairing to match. The service was good, probably bordering on intrusive at times as courses came and went very quickly. Biggest opportunity was to update the tired decor; threadbare carpets don’t do justice to the overall experience.
Would recommend and would return.
A great experience.Wonderfull meal and attentive, unobstrusive service.
C19 protocols seamlessly applied.
Although individual courses were very small, there were seven of them, all delicious, plus an amuse bouche and petits fours, making it excellent value. We opted for the paired wines which were exceptional, generally biodynamic and/or organic.
We went for the Premium taster menu (was fantastic, really). Didn’t go for the wine supplement as was driving (thankfully or would have broken the bank overall).
You do get what you pay for with a Michelin starred restaurant though - loved it.
This was our first time but it won’t be our last. Thoroughly enjoyable evening. The food was exceptional, service faultless, I really cannot fault it.
New chef James Greatorex is definitely bringing his own style to l'ortolan with a completely new menu. Very innovative, with unusual taste pairings which really worked - white chocolate and caviar?? - mindblowing. We have been eating here for a number of years (since Alan Murchison's days) but it feels like eating at a different restaurant. Looking forward to our next visit.
This was our first visit to L’Ortolan. We chose the 10 course tasing menu. Overall the food was excellent. The two courses I found disappointing were the lobster (the salad/cucumber accompaniment didn’t really “do it” for us) and then the Burrata cheese course (we could have been eating any old piece of mozzarella - it was bland and nothing special at all).
Due to COVID, the waiters have to wear masks which is excellent BUT it is not easy to hear the detailed description of the dishes with masks and many of the waiting staff had strong accents. As such it would have been appreciated to have a simple printed menu with details, as opposed to a QR code taking us to a top level menu online. We recently went to The Waterside in a day and we had a menu with details to take home.
Would I go back? Yes but, as there are so many other places to try, it won’t be for a while.
Great food..decor was slightly old fashioned and needed updating. But food was delicious.
Excellent sommelier- appreciated his recommendations and the food was excellent!
Delectable taster menu, very attentive refined service as you would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. Super Wine pairings with a fascinating story behind each choice.
The dishes were exquisitely presented and delicious and the waiters were extremely Knowledgeable and attentive. I would definitely recommend L’Ortolan fine dining for special occasions as you feel thoroughly spoiled.
Having heard a lot about the restaurant I was keen to give it a go as both my partner and I are keen foodies. The presentation and ambiance was at first glance a little underwhelming the room we were seated in lacked colour making it a bit sterile. Having said that we had a large table and plenty of space and though close to the door it was not distracting.
As this was our first time we went for the prestige menu with accompanying wines. The appetisers seemed elegant and tasty and when the wine came I liked the explanation about why it was picked from the sommelier. Having said that the first two wines were extremely sweet which surprised us a little as it rather tainted our palette, they were also Romanian. Whilst I except good wines do come from this region a 2019 vintage is hardly sophisticated and also surprising given the vibe that was promoted was a ‘proud to be French’ one.
In general I expected to find some courses I liked and others I was less fond of however sadly for me the latter was more often the case. The execution was often a little sub par for instance the lobster was beautifully dressed but ruined by a slightly stale bit of fish, though my partners seemed fresher so maybe I was un lucky. The grouse tasted like it was made of salt rather than cooked in it and a number of courses had battered parts which also suffered the same salty fate. For a quality establishment this was a poor delivery I felt. There were also a number of courses that randomly had what appeared to be a musli adaptation. Often this overwhelmed flavour and felt a little unnecessary.
The service was good although pace at times was a little slow, we were there for over four hours which resulted in a little restlessness however the servers did seem to adapt delivery depending on if myself or partner was at the table.
Unfortunately this story does not have a happy ending for us, in fact we even cancelled the last course as there seemed no sense in continuing. Sad
Service was very good. The wine and champagne was excellent with the food. Would love to try pairing with the wines. The only dish we were not too keen on was the scallop with sweet corn. Others were excellent.
A really good meal, wine, service etc. In particular the service was great. There is an inherent problem not just with this restaurant but others I’ve visited since coming out of lockdown. It is that with such complex cooking when the servers explain the dishes whilst wearing masks, you can’t always understand they’re saying. It’s not their fault but it is a problem for diners and if you are paying circa £150 per head you’d certainly like to know what’s going on with your dish. Obviously we’ve all got to adapt to things but maybe a little explanatory note with each dish might help? Just a thought. However great meal and great to see them back!
Excellent food and service. Amazing wine suggestions and the food was superb. Highly recommend the Lamb! Slightly quiet when we arrived but the ambience built the longer we were there
