Amazing food & service
The food was very salty and overall not worth what we paid for the meal.
An outstanding and memorable experience that stands apart from its peer restaurants. The food is inventive and thoroughly delicious without being pretentious. The service, from the maitre'd to the wait staff, was friendly and highly professional--genuinely caring that customers' needs are met and they are happy. The ambience upstairs was perfect--good music, but not overbearing, beautiful open setting, tables spaced well to provide a feeling of intimacy even amidst a full restaurant. Highly recommend for any time of day and for everyday meals or special occasions.
QUE RICO! I lived in Mexico for years and am always on the hunt for top-notch authentically flavored Mexican food. This is it. Plus maybe the best brussel sprouts I have ever eaten. Also loved the spicy cucumber margarita. Five stars all around.
Fish tempura tacos, pastrami tacos & brussel sprouts were all good. Banana ice cream with jasmne sauce lacked flavor. Margaritas were good but not worth $18. price. Service was very good.
After reading good comments about the food I took my teen age son with me to have an early dinner (5:45). We were seated in an alcove are by the front windows, near the door, almost directly under a staircase. I commented how cold if felt and asked if they could adjust the heat - but they couldn't. They offered to move our seat to upstairs ---but I didn't want to be in "Siberia", away from the main room. As well we had sat down, drank water and weren't in a mood to get up. The poor seats set a bad tone for my meal -- every though the food was good, it was cold and at time we felt a strong cold air draft. All for the sake of filling in more tables, the owners put people in that spot (it only accommodates 3 tables or so), as well it was in the front so we served as free advertisement to outside passersby. They may have thought we (a father and his son) were trendy enough to be put in the main dining room --- I don't know. At a minimum they should fire the host who put us there and I'd hope they would remove those tables.
Awesome food but portions a bit small. Worth it though. Service a 5
Had a reservation for 7 PM. Showed up at 7 on the dot. We were seated at 7:20. Food was OK but way overpriced. The $30 crab nachos were nothing to write home about, and not enough for 4 people to share. The room was loud, and we were upstairs in the back. Service was also OK. They forgot an entrée, but claimed that it was a misunderstanding. Not that big a deal, but for the prices you would expect better. Typical Midtown restaurant, business people with their work colleagues from out of town, office Bros, d-bags, etc.
A nice twist on Central American fare and great drinks.
Service was amazing! The 7 salsas and guacamole is a great way to start. We also tried the black cod app, very tasty but not a lot so a good app to not get full on...although pricey but hey it’s NYC. My husband has the skirt steak and it was cooked perfectly and so flavorful! I ordered the crispy pork belly...this is the only thing that disappointed. I know pork belly is supposed to have some fat but this seems like all fat! I couldn’t finish it. Dessert was ice cream sandwich- different but good - and the server gave us the corn ice cream taco on the house..this I loved! Drinks were excellent also!
Even our out-of-town guest from Texas was impressed by the creative, tasty Mexican food served in the heart of Manhattan! Adriano, our waiter, was terrifically attentive, informative, and welcoming. He and the superb cuisine made for an exceptionally memorable evening! We'll be back soon.
Recommended this location to a friend and I am writing a review on behalf of her experience, which she said was amazing.
The food is very good, but for the price, it doesn't stand out enough as compared to the hundreds of other Mexican places that are far less expensive.
I didn't eat any of the mains, which could be incredible for all I know. But the things I ordered - guacamole, a couple other starters, and 4 different types of tacos - are easily recreated for 1/3 the price at other good Mexican restaurants.
Loved the ambiance. The staff, food, drinks could not have been more enjoyed!
I brought my Mum for a Christmas treat during a stay in the city, and we were absolutely not disappointed. The food was delicious, with a broad menu and plenty of fish/veg choices alongside some star meat dishes. The puddings were particularly impressive - the chocolate ice cream sandwich is a must!
This restaurant has one of the most creative menu I've come across in a long time. If you are looking for unique flavors in your pallet, this is one spot to definitely consider. The décor and ambiance is exceptional, and the service is what is to be expected for the price.
Service was great and ambience was on point. The food was good, a little spicy for my liking but knew that coming in. Had the uni tacos, it was decent. Then had the skirt steak, cooked perfectly medium rare. The onion salad was a little underwhelming. We had the pineapple dessert, it was better than I expected. The pineapple was caramelized to perfection and the camomile ice cream was really light and refreshing.
Group dinner for friends birthday. Staff was excellent and food, esp dessert, was outstanding
A memorable lunch with food, services and ambience all getting 5 stars. Wait staff teamed to be sure all needs were met and offered good advice. Loved our spicy cucumber cocktail. Highly recommend the 7 salsa guacamole and use the salsa for dishes that follow. The smoked black cod was beautiful and tasty. Loved the tacos. We had fish, octopus, and bacon among our group of 3. The decor is stunning. Highly recommended and look forward to returning.
One of the best meals I’ve ever had. Every single dish from start to finish was excellent.
We really had a great time. The staff was very nice, the space is lovely, the food was beautifully presented (maybe the prettiest plates I have seen), the drinks were yummy. Overall, one of the best restaurant experiences I've had.
It was fine. Food was uneven.
This has been hands down the most amazing restaurant we have been to in NYC! From the fun twist on Mexican dishes to the ambience and friendly staff, I couldn’t have been more pleased. The guac & 7 salsa’s will blow your mind!!!! Fish tacos were to die for! My daughter got the steak tacos and loved them. The blistered shishito peppers were a nice addition to the meal and I even threw a few in my tacos. Just when I thought it couldn’t get better....dessert. Oh. My. Word. They brought out some sort of warm chocolate mousse with something like snow piled on top and drizzled w a warm coffee reduction. I could have fallen over with pleasure. This place is a must and we will def squeeze in a second visit before we leave!!!
We ended up leaving because there were very few options to choose for dinner. The options were unique, the ambiance was quite lovely, but no one in the party could find a single thing that they would want to eat. Labeled as a Mexican restaurant, but served falafel, steak tartar, pork chops, etc. Not what we expected.
Way too much salt added to everything and portions were small compared to the amount they charge you for food.
Holiday Dinner with Family; polite and attentive service. Host was very good. Food was delicious, one dish came overdone; but everything else was great. Cocktails were incredible and server made wonderful recommendations and pairings. Would revisit!
Loved the upper deck where I could view almost the entire restaurant from my table along the railing. Food was good, The tempura tacos had way too much tempura. I would have preferred the option of a grilled fish taco. The octopus was delicious, and the peppers were great. The crab & sea urchin nachos were yummy but a $30 price tag. Yikes.
Simply brilliant yet again. A very cerebral approach to Mexican cuisine delivered with culinary knowhow. A fantastic experience.
Food was way way way overpriced for what it was. $160 for 2 tacos each for 5 people - appetizer was a small bowl of guacamole for $17 with chips and 7 salsas (about 2 tablespoons each) and it was nothing to write home about. Ordered veggies for table which was a very small plate of roasted green chilies -$8?!?! I’ve eaten at fancy places with expensive food and small portions but that’s only worth it if the flavors are phenomenal. Not the case at all at Empellon- flavors were basic at best. Ridiculous dining experience
Creative spin on Mexican cuisine. Inventive ingredient combinations. Love the cabbage salad with the crunch of dehydrated fava beans. Delectable meat dishes such as pork and beef short rib. Imaginative, whimsical desserts. Appreciate the care such as tortillas made from masa freshly ground in house.
Kitchen Ran out of steak which was a disappointment.
On Monday, December 24, 2018, my wife, our friend and I had lunch there. It was excellent. We had the Lunch Prix-Fixe. We had the Sticky Rice Tamal with Red Chile Duck, the Octopus with Celery and Salsa Verde, and the Pumpkin Flan with Pepitas. The Pumpkin Flan was creative. It was very quiet, which we like.
The food unbelievable! The staff is knowledgeable. Amazing.
i LOVE empellon taqueria, but midtown just wasn't up to par. Service was super polite and accomodating, and tried their best while being understaffed and headed by a new maitre d. there was one bartender serving the entire restaurant, again trying his best to keep up. the appetizers were all overly ambitious, and although interesting, none were THAT good (we had the citrus salad, well balanced but weird, the duck tamal, great in theory but needed a contrast, and the black quinoa or lentils, with 2 small pieces of squash was just absurd for 18$...fish and octopus tacos were great though.
Lovely dining experience
The best restaurant in the city!
Food is delicious and creative. Noise level from the bar is not great.
Best restaurant I have been to in some time. Incredible vibe, excellent food, outstanding service. Highly highly recommend. I rarely take time to write reviews like this.
Corn taco ice cream and avocado dessert were a must order. Out of this world
