Savory aromas drift from the kitchen as one enters the front door, giving a hint of culinary delights to come. The casual and comfortable, yet elegant interior of the restaurant is warm and inviting. A large stone fireplace adorns a corner in the main dining room, casting a soft glow around the room.

We are Richmond’s premier French dining experience. Our menu is a collection of dishes cultivated by a Master French chef. We offer an array of fine wines from around the world, 23 are poured by the glass. Our mixologist boasts an impressive range of signature crafted cocktails and guest favorites.

As we are often fully seated on Fridays and Saturdays, we can only hold a reservation for 15 minutes without advanced notice. We allocate 2 hours for parties of 2 to 5, 2 ½ hours for parties of 6 or more.

We had a lovely evening from the moment we were greeted at the door to the moment we left. The escargot is one of our go to’s and never disappoints and the the she crab soup was a wonderful new discovery. Both our entrees (lamb chop’s medium rare / Calf’s liver medium) were perfectly prepared and plated. The front of house staff was attentive but not intrusive and nailed every aspect of timing our meal. Always a favorite of ours.

I took my husband there for his birthday so it was a special occasion. We were greeted with a complimentary champagne, that was absolutely delicious, and I am not a champagne drinker. We have only been to Chez Max twice in a span of 12 years. Whether it was my husband or myself or one of our guests with a large party, the first time we went, the food has always been exceptional except the fish. One fish dish this time and one last time did not meet expectations. Drinks, wine and service was outstanding.

Food was great but service was severely lacking, especially for a fine dining establishment. Our server basically ignored us. He was great to the six top next to us, offering free champagne to everyone since it was one's 79th birthday. I guess our 7th anniversary doesn't qualify since it was never even brought up or offered to us, even though it was mentioned in our reservation and the manager who seated us congratulated us on 7 years. Bread was brought to our table after the main course, though everyone around us had a basket when they were seated. Not sure if I'd go back due to the poor service.

Relatively new to Virginia, this was our first visit to Chez Max. And I promise we will be back again. And again. We were celebrating our 39th wedding anniversary and we wanted a place suitable for this special occasion. Chez Max delivered. The atmosphere. The food. The service. Outstanding all. Easter dinner with the special crabcakes. Food is always great here but I can still be surprised by how delicious entrées arrive. Crabcakes with no fillers, grilled squashes, roasted potatoes. Simple, hot, elegant and out of this world. Craft cocktails to beat any in the Richmond area, especially the grapefruit habanero concoction that the owner recently created and added to the menu.

What a wonderful experience! The food was excellent - we loved everything we ordered (mussels, foie gras, french onion, crab cakes, lamb, veal chop, and desserts) . Definitely the best french onion soup in the Richmond area. The drinks were very tasty and reasonably priced. The service was also great. Would highly recommend and will certainly return in the future!

We had Easter dinner at Chez Max and it was amazing. My husband loved the Escargot and Crab soup; his Dover sole was delicious and served table side by the owner. My daughter had the French onion soup and the special crab cakes. She was very pleased. My filet was perfect and very tasty. We saved room for the chocolate lava cake and it was awesome. Our server was excellent! We will definitely be back!
