Cafe Frida - Columbus Ave
Our knowledge and passion for the tequila culture has been awarded by the Tequila Regulatory Council of Mexico since 2006, making us one of the few restaurants in the world of having such honor.
Come and enjoy the warmth of Mexico!
This was my second time here, and I liked it more the first time. The portions are very small for what you pay for, especially the tacos. The shrimp tacos had one shrimp each, they were large, but still. There was a little flavor lacking too. The salads are substantial, and the service is very very fast and attentive. Still, maybe just a good place to drink.
Food was not that good for what they were charging. The service was slow, even with being one of the only tables there. Additionally, I did not appreciate the 20% automatic tip for poor service.
Nice comfortable restaurant with moderate noise level. Food was only ok and portions were small. The guacamole was delicious albeit small as was the fundido. Fish tacos were only ok and a very small portion. The Talyocos were delicious but again a small portion. Enchiladas were normal portion but nothing to write home about. All in all there is much better Mexican food around.
Disappointed and discrimated against when they refused to give us Happy Hour prices at a table adjoining the bar area. I am disabled and cannot climb onto a bar stool. We had to sit at the bar to get those prices. Not ADA compliant.
Excellent tequila and mezcal menu. Great place when you're hitting the American Museum of Natural History.
I always feel like I am in Mexico when I eat here especially the food and ambiance Everything is cooked to taste one's level of spice- And at night the margaritas, guacamole and home made chips are addictive. The restaurant has been here since 1983, so that is telling in this fickle, high rent area.
One of my all time favorite restaurants. The food is always fresh, creative and delicious.
Delicious tacos and margaritas. Guacamole is some of the best I’ve ever had!
Nice neighborhood spot for fresh quacamole and appetizers. They offer a variety of margarita flavors, but the ones I tasted were watered down and either needed more fresh lime or a floater of tequila. flautas and individual street tacos, and the suizas enchiladas are very good. I wouldnt go with a large party as it can get very noisy. Prefer to sit at bar or in a 2 top table overlooking the street.
Slow service and small plates. The chicken tinga quesadillas were delicious, but nothing special for the price tag. Expensive beers. We were seated quickly, but after the food was ordered it was very slow to get another drink.
Food was great and drinks were even better. The only downfall was we had to sit at the bar since the tables were by the windows.
The hibiscus margarita was amazing and we were all really happy with our brunch entrees!
Second time here- this time supremely disappointed. Food was mediocre. steak was old. Enchilada barely warm enough to melt cheese. Drinks diluted.
We had a nice vegetarian dinner before the theater. Very pleasant place to dine.
Terrible service, waiters just throw the food to the table, no training, no respect
Love to have this easy go-to spot near the American Museum of Natural History. Despite being quite busy, we were able to make a reservation for 7 people. My sopas were delicious and my other friends raved about the rice, beans and salad. The servers were patient with us. We had children and one broke a glass, but everyone was understanding and helpful. Didn't get to taste the margaritas, but will be back for sure!
Nice place, right on Columbus, a neighborhood gem. Good food and great service, lively environment.
I think our expectations were too high. Our server was very nice but the food was not great. But the value was.
It’s always good and a great value. Like the signature drinks and great tequila selection and margaritas. Great value on the steak and the guacamole is fabulous, don’t pass on it
Terrible service, seated next to glass door so it was freezing the entire meal, mediocre food
Don’t bother making a reservation! This is the third time we’ve had to wait over 30 minutes for our table. There was no apology. We were finally seated by the door with the door curtain hanging over one chair and we were freezing. The food was average which was a sad surprise because it is usually very good. We were asked a couple times if we were finished with our drinks because they had run out of glasses. This will be our last time at Cafe Frida. Overall it was a very disappointing experience.
We greatly enjoyed our meal at Cafe Frida! Their menu had a nice selection and portion sizes were reasonable.
For pretty authentic Mexican on the upper west side, this should top the list. Cafe Frida has been around a while, but the food and drinks have held up with time. Servings are large. Salad quality is excellent.
Hands down favorite. It's great every time.
Great food, nice room, friendly staff, a tad noisy, but generally a fine Mexican entry.
My friends ordered an item from the brunch menu, but even after confirming what they wanted they were still brought a different dish. Granted, they were happy to have enchiladas but had ordered chilequiles. Other than that we really enjoyed our meals!
The food Was great the service was great and it’s a very cute place but the temperature in the restaurant was so hot. I felt like I was in a sauna for two hours straight.
we were upstairs which is perfect for a group of friends, but it took a long time for the wait staff to get to us. drinks were good. food was small portions and the masa cakes were a little stale. potential to be good, but needs to be fresher.
Great ambience and food
A neighborhood gem, delicious, fresh, interesting food. Small, cozy space. Great for lunch. Authentic Mexican food. Sweet spot!
Our mistake for not following up in advance we would have a table with chairs, even that is what the own-line reservation indicated it would be. One in our party has serious back problems which resulted in excruciating pain sitting on our assigned stools at a high table.
Extremely pleased with the food and the efficient service. The latter meant we had less time perched on those stools.
Disappointing to say the least. The service was too pushy and the food was nothing special. I wanted this to be a good new spot. Unfortunately it was not. My friend's meat tacos came out raw They also have B rating which is starting to make sense.
We went after a visit to the nearby museum. Food was delicious! Cant wait to go back!
It was my friend’s birthday which was completely forgotten about. Service was poor, no utensils or napkins offered until asked for. Drinks took forever to come out, and they were out of basic dishes like cevice for a mexican place. Food has gotten mediocre since my last visits. Overpriced for what it is and quality def not worth the price or service, should have went to a decent steakhouse, would have left the same $200 for two but would have gotten much better food and service for my money. Probably will not come back unless invited to. Which I doubt.
Loved Cafe Frida! Great food and good service. Would go again!
Excellent service, Ana was in charge. Good food!!!
This was a delicious stop on a quick trip to NYC with my family. The restaurant has a nice ambience and service is very friendly. The fresh guacamole was so tasty that we ordered two of them. We also had quesadillas and the tlacoyos which were so yummy we are very last bite off the plates. It was quite a satisfying meal!
Went in after the Macy’s thanksgiving day parade inflation station, it was packed so I’m glad I made a reservation. The food was amazing and our waitress was so attentive despite how crowded it was. The food and drinks both came out quick. Would definitely go back!
It seems like Frida has been there forever, or at least as long as we've been volunteering at AMNH. The food has been consistently good to excellent, and a bit more creative than the average Mexican restaurant. The guac is truly outstanding, as it is made to order and can be adjusted to individual tastes. While you can get "street food" style Mexican, it's the more exotic items on the menu that we enjoy the most. And don't miss the corn souffle.
Great find! Restaurant was so helpful in squeezing us in on a Saturday night (family group of 10). It is a cozy, warm space -great on a cold night- the staff sang happy birthday to another table as we were dining.
Margaritas were outstanding, guacamole very fresh and everything else: short ribs, chicken quesadillas, chorizo tacos - was delicious!! The only so-so dish was the fish tacos (mahi mahi) ... would prefer a softer or even fried fish to this. Otherwise A+ ...we will be back for sure!
