What Insiders Are Saying
You might think Mexican food is best served sloppy and cheap. Downtown's Broken Spanish will prove you wrong.
The food was very good and the staff were great (especially the hostess). However, Broken Spanish really need to be more upfront about how the food is served. When we sat down, the waiter informed us that the dishes were served "family style" and that he recommended two or more dishes per person to share. So, just be aware that your bill will most likely be double what you would normally expect if you just glanced at the menu online, and the prices per dish are already a little on the high side. One dish per person isn't a lot of food and will leave you hungry. That style of service wasn't clear before we booked the reservation, so we ended up paying a lot more than expected, which left us grumbling a little bit.
Had a great meal with family. Go with a group you don't mind sharing dishes with, they are meant to be shared. I loved that part of it, so I got to try more!
The blue tortillas and the lentils are delicious. So are the spinach tamales, esquites, etc. Even the passion fruit mocktail was delicious. Highly recommend this place!!
The most memorable, creative, delicious, well-wine-paired, interesting meal I've had in LA and anywhere in a long time. > Bestia, > Bavel > Animal, > Mozza , > badmaash ...
Wow! So many excellent dishes to choose from and all were fantastic! The duck meatballs are a must! The chicharon was incredibly flavorful - just a little on the rich side for me. The lamb neck tamale was also pretty great. Only negative for me was the noise level; pretty loud in the area where we were seated. Service was spot on; informative, kind, and engaging.
My boyfriend and I had a lovely date-night at Broken Spanish last week. The restaurant was fairly crowded but we were still able to hear each other (this is especially important to me because I'm hard of hearing and take note of the noise-level wherever we eat out). The service was attentive and the food was delicious - we ordered many plates to share and left very satisfied. We can't wait to go back and try out other dishes from their menu!
Excellent food & cocktails! Super authentic and creative. Subpar service. Our server was not friendly at all and seemed very annoyed that I had several food sensitivities that they had to work around.
The lamb neck tamale is a must-try & the pineapple cinnamon cocktail was divine. Too bad the service wasn't so good or else I would've given this a better rating.
Disappointing experience. The food was not good, not tasty and no quality. Additionally, it was overpriced, too overpriced I’d say for the quality of the food and the type of dishes we had. We got a high table, horribly closed to other tables, so it seemed we were having dinner with a large party instead of two-people dinner. Uncomfortable. The service was ok, not great, but ok. I’d probably choose other places in Downtown LA if you are looking around
The chicharron is out of this world! We also enjoyed the corn and fundido dishes.
Service was friendly and fantastic!! Food was just ok. Seated at the counter (to be fair they do tell you this in advance) but it’s really tucked away from the rest of the restaurant so very little atmosphere. I would however give it another try on the basis of the excellent service alone.
We were a party of seven for my husband's birthday. The food was great, the waiter was very helpful and recommended some great dishes. Excellent margaritas.
Was a wonderful meal, a gastronomic experience! Ambiance not that great but with food like that who cares?
Really creative touches on authentic Mexican food. Bang for you buck and also a great use of local produce .
The chicarron was incredible, along with the seasonal ceviche. Tequilla and Mezcal menu is extensive with a wide variety to choose from. A little expensive, but high quality cuisine.
Beautiful, fun New Year’s Eve dinner. We shared lots of small plates and one large. The tamales and short ribs with frijoles were amazing! Beautiful margaritas and tequilas. Highly recommend!
For the overpriced menu I did expect to be impressed. Unfortunately the service was poor and rushed, the noise level was ridiculously loud, the food was meh (undercooked beans?!), and to top it off; our table for 2 was cramped with a few other tables in a busy corner next to the bus boy station.
Really awesome experience all around. The food was all very delicious. Our server was fun, knowledgeable and timely. The restaurant is well decorated and the vibe is really great. Will be returning next time I’m in LA!
Broken wallet!! Overpriced Mexican Food. Not worth it.
Service was great. Food was on the spicy side - very good ingredients and tasted fresh.
Incredible menu! Outstanding service and wonder ambiance. We love, love, love Broken Spanish.
It was my birthday dinner and we loved the restaurant! From our amazing server, who was so knowledgeable and helped us navigate the menu to the amazing food. Can’t wait to return!❤️
Drinks and food were fantastic!
We went on a Wednesday night, so you would think not too busy, good service, etc...Service was awful. We waited 10 minutes or so before anyone even offered us a drink. The wait for food was even longer. Our main course was served with cold tortillas. The food was very average and actually made my wife and I sick the next day. Definitely not worth the price tag. We will not be coming back.
Delicious and amazing customer service!!
This is the best restaurant in LA - be sure to order the esquites.
Good food, broken services. The waiter seems always angry, never smile, very pushy, and gave us zero useful info.
Broken Spanish is the most delicious Mexican Food in Los Angeles, CA! The have amazing craft cocktails utilizing the finest tequila & Mescal. I highly recommend the frijoles, Spinach Tamales, and the mole chicken entree.
Foods were amazing, great wine selection. Servers recommendations were on points and prompt service. Overall a great dining experience.
Incredibly creative dishes with powerful flavors! Wanna go back!
Broken español is one of the best restaurants I've ever dined at. Try anything. Share it with friends. Drink and be merry. Repeat.
went to dinner before the LA Kings game. service was timely and the food was very good although many of their dishes were on the slightly spicy side. we always get the lamb neck and cheese tamale. Adam was a very good server for us.
Cool downtown LA spot
Very good food but very overpriced. No problem paying for the healthcare for the employees but maybe the owner should kick in.
Vegetarian options limited and possibly the worst Chile relleno I’ve ever had. Excellent choices of tequila tho slightly over priced.
Excellent experience with work colleagues. Fantastic food and service.
Nice cocktail menu...especially for mezcal fans. Food was creative and delicious. Very attentive service. Only complaint was that it was noisy and hard to hear but fun vibe.
It was not what I thought it would be. They don’t even have any substitution for diabetic customers, (Diet Coke or Pepsi). Doesn’t offer a lot of varieties of food. Everything comes in a small portion. You still not fulfill by the end of the meal!
The food was incredible. The waitress did not inform us it was family style so a couple of us ordered the same thing. It was a waste. The worst part was the noise level. It wasnt “festive” it was disruptive. This alone makes me never want to return.
The food was delicious and the service excellent, which made for an incredible dining experience!
Great atmosphere. Food was delicious a bit overpriced for the amount you get. Waiter told us that one entree can be shared (which we did) we ordered the lamb which was delicious but at the same time we had to order sides that were not included. Drinks were great!! Overpriced too but the quality was good. Would recommend for a date or anniversary or some sort of celebration. The only issue was our table, we were so close to our neighbors that I felt we were having dinner with them. If you look at one of the pictures you can see our neighbors elbow. That was an issue for us. Overall the setting was great!!
