Michelin starred Boka Restaurant has been a fixture in Chicago dining since 2003. In January 2014, Chef Lee Wolen joined as Executive Chef/Partner after the restaurant underwent a major renovation. Since his time at Boka, critics have taken notice. Phil Vettel of Chicago Tribune and Eater Chicago both named Lee as “2014 Chef of the Year.” Most recently, Lee was named 2015 “Chef of the Year." Boka’s food features contemporary, American cuisine, focusing on seasonality and sourcing as many local ingredients as possible.
What Insiders Are Saying
Boka serves fancy contemporary American food, but it still manages to be cool and fun despite being nice and expensive.
Excellent everything! Food, ambience, service. Expensive, but worth it!
Fenominal service, great environment, I smelled like str8 gas pack and the waiter was cool abt it. I got the 9 course tasting menu which was exquisite as fok.
The food is simply delicious, beautiful interior and great service.
This is an instagram worthy restaurant. I found this restaurant from its amazing reviews while we were visiting Chicago. Amazing food and THE BEST service. We highly rate this place!
Sea Bass was very fishy and under cooked, which rendered the skin to a tacky and soggy consistency. The special was a lobster and truffle pasta. There were two quarter sized pieces of lobster, both were rubbery and over cooked.
Appetizers, the tartar, crudo, and octopus were good, but not Michelin caliber in my opinion.
The service was quite slow; although, they were accommodating for the sub par entrees.
Every chef can have a bad day or miss the mark with an entree. I assume that was the case during my experience at Boka.
Great staff and the food was amazing
Service was spectacular
CANT WAIT TO GO BACK!!!! The food and service was impeccable.
It took a moment to get seated after we arrived, but after that the service was flawless. The staff had helpful suggestions about how to best combine dishes, and knew the menu and wine list well.
The food was top notch. I got the beet endive salad and the tagiliatelli lobster special. My partner got the seared ahi and the beef tartar.
On top of that, there were little amuse bouche between dishes that added variety and depth to the meal. The portions and pacing were perfect. The flavors we subtle and combined well. The decor was a little dull, and tables felt a little close together, but it was still a satisfying and intimate dinner.
Dined at Boka for a birthday dinner. Absolutely stunning food. We chose the 9-course tasting menu. Such a wide range of beautiful flavor combinations. This was an experience where we were really talking about the food throughout the meal - marveling at how deftly the menu wove together interesting taste profiles. Venison with prunes and pumpkin, for example. The service was outstanding - and our waiter checked in at the beginning to see if there were particular flavors or foods that we didn’t like, so they could shape the menu to our tastes. The restaurant was beautiful. And while there was some music playing, it was just enough to drown out other tables without causes me or my partner to have to shout to hear each other. This really enhanced the experience. We will be back at Boka. Oh - and cocktails! Great cocktails. All in, we spent about $500 total for two. That was food, drinks and tip.
The whole experience was absolutely fantastic (food, service, special touches). We were celebrating a birthday and the staff and our server went out of their way to make it a special evening. The food was all wonderful. Can't recommend the crudo enough.
Hands down the best meal we have ever experience!!!
Amazing. Food and service was great!
Spent a second amazing evening at Boka recently to celebrate my engagement. Their tasting menu is amazing, perfect portions so you end the meal satisfied. Their dishes are creative and always hit the mark. Service is spot-on, wine pairings are delicious and decour is inviting. I tell everyone I know to go. If you are looking for uniquely delicious food at a reasonable price, you found it.
Everything was excellent, but we didn't love our dishes - duck for me and chicken for her. It was good, just not the outstanding food we expected at that price point
Everything we had was beyond delicious and they give you a small tasting at the beginning and the end. Soooo good.
The Best as always !!!
The Dry-Aged duck totally outstanding! One of the best dishes I have had in a while. Bravo to the chef and staff.
Very solid restaurant. Great food and service. Convenient to the nearby theaters.
The menu is a gem. Our group tried many different items and every item was amazing.
The service was exceptional. We had theater pans and the timing of all courses was perfect.
We made a 5pm reservation at Boka to celebrate my wife's birthday before a show at the Steppenwolf. Our waiter, Augustus, explained the menu to us, and after discussing our dining preferences and time restrictions, we decided to go with the 9 course tasting menu. We bypassed the full wine wine pairing and instead allowed Augustus to select a few glasses of wine for us. The meal was fabulous and Augustus proved to be extremely knowledgeable and spot on with his wine choices. We were never rushed and still completed the full 9 courses with plenty of time for a leisurely walk to the theater. Augustus and the entire staff at Boka went above and beyond to make the experience enjoyable and memorable. We will be back.
I was disappointing. I spent a lot of money for the Tasting Menu with my dad as his Christmas gift, but the wait time between each dish was borderline ridiculous. Usually with tasting menus, it is timed very strategically and it never seems like you are waiting too long once you finish a dish for the next to arrive. But we had to wait very long. Our main meat dish took about half an hour. It was a crowded night, but when I spent as much money as I did for this menu, I expected the service to be excellent and it definitely wasn't. My dad and I found ourselves twiddling our thumbs often, it took so much away from the experience. Honestly, I felt very sad that this Christmas gift was not nearly as special as I thought it would be. Also, the dessert was incredibly mediocre. I was excited that they said they would serve 2 dessert plates, but they felt so similar to each other. Overall, not worth the price at all.
I was expecting much more from this restaurant.
The tasting menu was spectacular. One of the best meals I have had. Great variety of flavor and texture. Easy to order either pescetarian or vegetarian in addition to omnivore. They accommodated mixed dietary restrictions within our group. The one sour note was that the background music was deafeningly loud at first... definitely not in the background but an intrusive obstacle to conversation. Like your little brother demanding to show off his edgy musical tastes on his new stereo.
What a fantastic Sunday night dinner at Boka! We were running way late, but they still got us right in. Then, after we already ordered a few things off the menu, we pulled an audible to the 9-course tasting menu; they were good sports about the change and we made the correct choice; the tasting menu was thoughtful and delicious. Furthermore, the staff heard how excited we were about ordering the beef tartare (and then bummed when we found out it was not part of the tasting menu...so they altered a dish to include the tartare as a main ingredient - so nice. Ultimately, they made the night extraordinary and the dinner and experience well worth the price. I dont even need to mention the amazing Lithuanian cocktail.
Phenomenal food, service and overall experience.
Our dinner started out very strong with attentive service but once we ordered the tasting menu and the standard wine pairing package we began to feel neglected and disregarded. The food was good but not particularly memorable and the wine pairings while fine we felt there was not a lot of consideration given to the individual pairings. All-in-all a forgetable meal at a very, very expensive price. With tip (27%, my standard is 30%) we paid $607 for two of us. Definitley not worth the money and we will not return or recommend to others.
This restaurant has been on my radar for years, not sure what took me so long?! Inventive flavors and incredible table service...turned a birthday celebration into something really special.
Went to Boka to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary. They did not disappoint!!
We were welcomed with a glass of Prosecco to kick off the night. Jack and Pedro took care of us and they were excellent and gracious.
We decided to try out the tasting menu with wine pairing. This was our first wine pairing and I was a tad bit skeptical of how these things work. I don't have a very sophisticated palate and I'm lucky if I can pick out more than two flavor profiles when I drink wine. After an evening at Boka I am a believer!! It was amazing to taste the wine first, then have a bite of food and try the wine again. Felt like they were totally different wines!!! The wine and food also balanced each other out perfectly. Everything was on point with our 9 course meal but I have to say the quail was out of this world!! If it's a standalone item on their a la carte menu the next time I'm there, I am most definitely ordering it!
If you are looking to have a great date night or celebrate a special occasion, you won't go wrong picking Boka as your spot!
p.s. we also got personalized menus and hot chocolate in a box as keepsakes!!
Wonderful all the way around.
simply the best food ive ever had in my whole life bar none
We did tasting menu as special family dinner. Incredible experience for our teen daughters who were open to each course. Professional, yet comfortable service and homey atmosphere
Absolutely wonderful. Would recommended to anyone looking for a fine dining experience. Staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and the food was beyond what we expected.
This restaurant exceeded all our expectations! The service, food, ambiance etc. we’re all amazing.
Everything was top notch. Service outstanding and the food delicious all around. The stand-out from our order was the beef tartare. 2nd best I've had in my life.
This was amazing. Been reading up on the restaurant and all their great reviews and open table listing it in top 100 for 2018. So it had plenty to live up to. Was amazing from start to finish- great cocktails, then great wine, the food was one of the best meals I have ever had.
Not sure what the appetizer was called but the noodle mushroom app was my favorite thing I have eaten in Chicago, ever!
The food here is just excellent, never disappoints!!
Boka was a great experience for my family and I. We had some incredible handcrafted cocktails and superb food to match. I highly recommend the duck if it is on the menu. Simply decadent!
Absolutely amazing food, and I look forward to coming back again.
The drinks were also amazing. Djinn in a Jar might be the best drink I've ever had.
Great dinner for a special occasion.
