August (1) Five
Beautiful restaurant, not so loud that you can’t talk like so many restaurants. Delicious, clean food and great service
We arrived early as we had an SF Jazz 7pm show. Our waiter was the first ever to set an alarm on her phone to be sure we were out on time. She could not have been more attentive. I loved the towering champagne glass (felt as if I was getting married again:) Our booth of deep teal was quiet and totally romantic. We enjoyed every delicious thing we ordered. A perfect choice for conversation before a Civic Center performance.
Been eating for years at Amber & Dosa. Saw several pics on Instagram and decided to try August.
Food was decent - not a WOW/ OMG factor. Presentation is good. Lamp + chicken tikka was good. Halibut Fish was way to to dry and do not recommend. Save your money.
Disappointed - food is not as good as it was on previous visits (it’s been over a year since we were here). The only memorable dish was dessert (mango pana cotta). Delightful waitress and excellent cocktail.
Great spot with unique preparation and interesting flavors. Perfect for a pre-show meal.
not memorable. good enough for a lunch but not special in any way nor anything to go back to.
This is a premier dining experience with exceptional service and exquisite presented, luscious food.
The cocktail menu has something for everyone and even the "mocktails" are very satisfying. We had one member of our party who has a dairy sensitivity and the kitchen accommodated us without fuss on a very special New Years Menu.
Bit overpriced for the food delivered
I did not know interesting Indian Food could be. The whole experience was delightful. The wait staff was knowledgable and helpful. I will be back.
Food was great. Would love to see more choices in the menu.
Food was ok, service was odd. Dishes placed on our table with comment like " this is chicken". We were pre theater and the could not get us out in 1 hour and 15 min. Pro- Drinks are awesome. Con- it's super expensive for fairly pedestrian food. We like Amber and Dosa much more.
Fabulous food and service all around. It's a favorite when we have theater tickets. Our favorite dishes are the salmon and the artichokes.
They gave our table away even though we arrived within 15 min window. Hostess was super rude about it and insisted they were in the right.
Came here for dinner before an evening at the symphony.
Drinks: I tried the ABCD cocktail and my husband had the Holi Cow. Drinks were balanced and tasty.
Food: We tried the palak chaat, gol guppa, chili truffle chicken kebab, lamb chapli kebab, and shared the salmon main. We asked that food be sent out as soon as it was prepared since we were on a slight time crunch. The palak chaat came out first and was crispy and delicious. Night was off to a great start! From there though August1Five failed to impress. The chicken came next and it was tender but all the flavoring came from the sauce which seemed lacking in quantity. The lamb chapli kebab was tasty but also slightly soggy, pastry was not as crisp as I would have liked. The salmon was nice but didn't impress me enough to want to have it again. Gol guppa was fine but I've had better elsewhere. I was considering dessert but my husband preferred to wait until after the show so as not to go into food coma.
Service: We waited a little bit for our server to show up but once he knew we had a show to get to service was great. Our drinks and food came out quickly which gave us plenty of time to eat and relax before the show. We got our check after only being at the restaurant for an hour (reservation was at 6, show was at 730) which was great.
Location/Decor: Very convenient for the ballet or symphony, just a block away. Parking is also easy at the garage on the other side of the ballet and symphony. Ambiance is beautiful, bar is gorgeous, loved the decor and lighting.
Overall: Would come back for the ambiance and a cocktail or two especially if I'm already on the area. Not sure if I'd go out of my way for this place though. Food-wise, outside of the palak chaat, I wasn't impressed when looking at the cost of each dish. 5 dollars cheaper per dish and I think we'd have something but all the costs add up and you've paid a nice chunk of change for a meal that didn't totally satisfy.
I don't know where to begin for this restaurant.... god I have never gone to "fine" dining and left with such a terrible aftertaste from the experience. They are heavily understaffed during lunch with not even a person there to greet us.
Our Drinks came after 30 mins of ordering... actually the first course of our tasting menu for some came before the drinks ... but the whole presentation of food they way they bring it out, the timing is so OFF! this restaurant needs to train employees on bringing out dishes at the same time or staggered so not half the table is eating and other half looking at them. They started flickering lights at 2:15 for us to leave since they close at 2:30... all this while we were still waiting for our DESSERT! Mind you I brought two teams here so our total bill for 14 people was roughly 1400$
Service was very slow and an issue for the group. They blame it on the kitchen but all seemed understaffed
The food was great, but this is honestly the least responsive service I’ve had in a restaurant this nice in a long time. Took a solid 20 min to even put in a drink order and food order, and no one ever came back to ask how things were. We would have ordered more rounds if someone would have come back to take the order. By the time we flagged down someone to get the check, it felt like the server was practically avoiding the table. As a server myself, if the timing is off on a meal (food coming out before drinks, or knowing it will take you awhile to get back to the table), you should try and mitigate the situation, not hide from it. The server didn’t even throw in a “thanks” when dropping off our $200+ check. It’s a shame that after an outstanding meal, we were talking about the poor service more than the food.
We arrived with a total rush of patrons from several Sunday afternoon performances, so the waiters(understaffed) were swamped from the moment the restaurant opened at 5pm. Our server patiently described the offerings and how they were best ordered, which was a great help. There was a long delay before our drinks came after ordering them. Starters were presented after 20-30 minutes and were excellent. Next course came within 20 minutes. Considering the crush of diners, the staff handled things quite well.
Our pre-theater meal was outstanding. The service was top-notch, the cocktails and wine selections were excellent, and our starters and main courses (that we shared) were absolutely delicious. And to top it off, our chef came to the table to ask about our satisfaction and to thank us for dining with them. A truly wonderful experience.
As usual amazing food and service. They changed their menu and my favorite drink "love potion" no longer on the menu ;-(
Food wasn’t tasty and was not filling at all. Not value for money at all.
The food was fantastic and the servers were great to us. We’ll be returning :)
Came here for my birthday on Thursday. Was really glad that there was a table available for me an my brother at 5:30. The wait staff were really kind and attentive. The food was well presented and delicious. Two people wished me a happy birthday when bringing out the dessert. Memorable time. Will definitely come back and bring my friends.
Just OK. Nothing great. Not bad by any means but not impressive. The artichoke appetizer was awful and had no flavor whatsoever. The artichoke was tough as well. We told them we didn’t like it and they took it off the bill which was appropriate. The butternut squash soup was good except for the slimy crunchy mushroom in it. The best dish was the main course lamb chops. They were very tasty and cooked perfectly. I would not come back to this restaurant or recommend it.
Excellent as always! Food is amazing, service is phenomenal, and it was such a wonderful experience. This restaurant never gets old!
Very nice twist on Indian food
Everything is VERY salty, and portion size is underwhelming
Good food. Great before a concert
We had a wonderful Sweet Potato bowl! I have already recommended the restaurant to another friend!
It was good
We have been there many times and every single time the food has been delicious. It was again tonight and our waitress was absolutely fabulous. Knew the food and everything else in the restaurant.
We hope they stay open for lunch always.
Great decor and drinks. The food is basically an Indian fusion with a modern take. The overall quality is great but still lacks some of the taste buds which I expected. From seafood to poultry there is good flavor but over fusion affects the final outcome. Also the food menu is limited, unless one is ok with limited options I would chose something else for more options.
Good location for Opera, etc. "Music" was uncomfortably jumpy, almost walked out; upon request, improved somewhat. Small plates offered good variety. Had it been more mellow, would definitely recommend for pre-event meal.
Asked the twice waiter to turn down the loud music. He said he asked the manager. Nothing changed and my companions and I could not easily hear each other's conversation. Willnow have to look for another place for dinner. We all like to dine out before symphony and opera and use these times to catch up on each other's lives. If we want a bar type atmosphere we would go to a bar. This is the second time that we dined here that the service was very slow. Not sure why but it literally took waving our hands in the air to get the attention of a server. We just wanted more water, more chai tea, and serving utensils. Food continues to be excellent with a great blending of spices. This may become a lunch place rather than a dinner place.
based on this visit i would not recommend eating here.
the cocktails were delightful but the food was less than stellar, especially for the price. it felt that the chef was trying hard to be innovative without much success.
The food was delicious and we really enjoyed the ambiance. Perfect for a date night!
Food was great, service not so much! Went in expecting to feel welcome.
Our best food experience in SanFrancisco and we were served by a fellow Winnipegger!
We had the Chef’s Menu and everything was outstanding.
The only hiccup was a cocktail that had too much Tumeric in it.
Big Kudos for both food and service.
A culinary delight! Amazing
Service attentive but slow.
