Ratings 8.0-8.5:The best way to think about restaurants in the low to mid 8′s is that these are the places you would absolutely go back to, anytime. These restaurants are ones that you want to bring a friend to, just so they can also experience the duck carnitas, or burger, or whatever dish the place is known for.

Always a great spot. Usually go for dinner but this time was for brunch.

Would say that plating/presentation could have been elevated - seemed quite utilitarian; Grilled ham), seafood sausage weren’t very inspired. Tasty & delicious though!

Monsieur Benjamin is one of our go to restaurants when we have Symphony tickets. Food is really good. Love the braised rabbit and the quail. We had a fried chicken stuffed with ham and cheese with a yummy sauce with mushroom this most recent visit and it was yummy! The desserts are really good too. My only knock on this place is that the wine pour is almost insulting. For 15-25 bucks a glass, a pour that is only about 5-6 ounces is pretty poor. My recommendation is go for the food, but head over to Fig and Thistle for a real glass of wine. They'll pour you a taste and then a real glass of wine for the same price or slightly lower.

We began with escargot and crab salad with aioli dressing as our two appetizers. Both were superb. My main course was char served with haricot vert. The fish was cooked to tender perfection -- neither raw nor desiccated. Friend enjoyed the fried chicken, also delicious. We also had a side dish of cooked lettuce with a piquant dressing -- unique but not my favorite dish.

For dessert, I loved the fried banana crepe served with rum raisin ice cream. Dinner companion enjoyed the generous three scoops of caramel swirl ice cream.

Service at Monsieur Benjamin was what one would expect from a highest tier restaurant. While thankfully not overly fawning, the many waitpersons were always there at exactly the right moment and all were appropriately friendly.

While not inexpensive, our total a la carte bill here, including a glass of champagne for each of us, came to $238 for two, and that includes 20% service compris automatically added to the bill by the restaurant. And, considering it was New Year's Eve, that total was about half of what other Civic Center restaurants were asking as a prix fixe for the holiday dinner.

While I have no problem with the mandatory 20% gratuity added onto the bill it should not be added to the amount charged for corkage. It’s very misleading to indicate that it’s $30 per bottle for corkage when you’re actually paying $36 with the 20% added. Corkage should not be included when the gratuity is calculated.

This was my second visit to Monsieur Benjamin. I brought my children (visiting from overseas) and they voted it the best meal of the week. Service is top class - very attentive, staff are fun and let you take your time. Food is delicious and has all the traditional French bistro food that you don't get to see enough. Rabbit, haddock remoulade, croquettes, English chicken all fabulous. Nice vibe, not too noisy but still lively. Great evening!

Excellent service but just mediocre food at best- masquerading as fine French. Very expensive appetizers and entrees. Six tiny Escargot - bland & dry, for an exceptionally high $20! Fried chicken (a la Chicken Cordon Bleu) $32- with no accompaniments. For $178- with 2 appetizers, 2 entrees and 2 glasses of wine— patrons should expect much more than this! If you like trendy this may be your place. If you like fine dining and a memorable experience- pass on Monsieur Benjamin.

I was very disappointed at the end of dinning experience. Everyone got a complementary dessert at the end. But our table didnt get desserts. Was that because our table only spend $200 for dinner? Or was it because our ethnicity? Was it because the waitress forgot? Was it because .... we were very happy with everything until the end.

Monsieur Benjamin is a very lively restaurant and bar. The food is very good and the service is excellent. There may be more authentic bistros in SF but this is a modern restaurant great for a date or theater night. The pate and bread were excellent, the escargot were good but needed more seasoning, we liked the fried chicken but we loved the artic char and flounder, and the banana crepe! The ice cream at MB is particularly yummy.

Came here before a showing of The Nutcracker - be sure to let the wait staff know you're here for a show and they'll make sure you're done on time. Excellent wine list - everything on the list is solid (mark ups are high but still, great wines). We started with endive salad and were thrilled with the blue cheese bc it didn't taste like blue cheese we typically try to avoid. We didn't like the escargot as much; the pesto sauce is a bit thick and we didn't find anything special about the appetizer. We had the rabbit and the duck as entrees - both were exquisite and we have no complaints. Remember to save room for the dessert!

The food was outstanding! All three of us had grilled Paris ham with poached egg, Brussels sprouts, maple glaze, hollandaise. I have never had such tender, melt-in-your-mouth ham! Poached egg was cooked perfectly. Nice maple glaze—a hint of sweetness. Outstanding hollandaise on the side. Palmier ice cream with calvadas caramel and gateau marjolaine for dessert. Excellent! Service was excellent and prices moderate. We went prior to 2pm performance of Nutcracker. Easy walking distance from Performing Arts Garage and the War Memorial Opera House. It was a very popular restaurant, so noise level was very energetic! We will definitely go back to Monsieur Benjamin!

Too cramped, the opposite of an intimate dinner. The food was okay, not spectacular. Basically a wasted expensive night out, will not come again.
I was also disappointed by the lack of variety of options, esp no frog legs!

I selected this restaurant based on its proximity to the War Memorial Opera House (we were attending the Ballet), and its exceptional reviews on Yelp. We arrived early and slipped across the alley to a little wine bar where the staff had many good things to say about Monsieur Benjamin and gave us recommendations on their favorite dishes. We seated for our reservation just after the doors opened and we had prompt attention and our server Evan helped us select drinks and get us started. We relied on her heavily to help select dishes and while I made my own wine choices, I was interested to hear her opinion being that she knew the qualites of each dish better than I, a first time diner. We had two fabulous starters, the Seafood Sausage, and the Chicken Liver Terrine (both recommended by our servers at the nearby wine bar). Both dishes were rich and delicious, a perfect pair with our chosen wines. We followed that with the Braised Rabbit, and the Quail main dishes. Both cooked to perfection and every detailed ingredient essential to the balance of the dish. I finished off the night with the Banana Crepe with Rum Rasin Ice Cream, which was decadently wonderful. We felt every dish was an absolut hit, nothing I would change in the slightest. Evan, our server was exceptional, with what we felt were thoughtful suggestions, and she never left us neglected and wasn't hovering either. Overall, an experience we're still talking about, days later. Our experience at Monsieur Benjamin put the perfect exclamation point on our magical afternoon at the Ballet.

Food was amazing! beef tartare was amazing. Lobster bisque was so aromatic and good but because it was so small like in a sauce plate it leaves us wanting more. Clams was great as well. The steak, quail, and rabbit leg was also very juicy and tasted perfect.

This French restaurant has delicious food, but is a bit pricey for what you get. The service was very attentive. The tables were placed very close together, so the feel is a bit claustrophobic. Despite this, the night we were there, the noise level was not bad. I'd particularly recommend the lobster bisque and the Arctic Char.
