Over the course of its long history, the Tavern was frequented by various layabouts and hangers-on including Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Eugene O'Neill, E. E. Cummings, Dylan Thomas, and Joe Gould, as well as by various writers, poets, and pugilists.
Since its renovation, Minetta Tavern has best been described as "Parisian steakhouse meets classic New York City tavern."
We hope — and believe — that's a somewhat accurate description of the place.
What Insiders Are Saying
Minetta Tavern in Greenwich Village is home to some of the best steaks, chops, burgers, and overall feel good vibes that New York City has to offer.
We found this place through a recommendation and were really just blown away. The service was impeccable but the food was out of this world. We had grilled oysters that were barely warmed medium oysters bathed in proscuitto butter. The bone marrow which I'm not a fan of anywhere else made me a fan - it was so tasty and delicious. Our entrees - -NY Strip and a Sea Bass were excellent and then we finished with the Grand Marnier souffle -- it was like eating a cloud. Highly recommend!
Two of us got the Black Label burger and it was incredibly under seasoned. Would have expected more for a $30 burger.
Has gone downhill. Such a shame!! Sent back the bone marrow (previously my fave dish) and the black label burger which was one of the best in nyc, was tastless.
My wife and I always come here when visiting the city. The place just has this vibe to it. The ambiance and energy is so cool. The only place we don’t mind having our table 6” from the others. Classic NYC.
Cotes de Boeuf- best steak I’ve ever had- hands down. This is my favorite restaurant in NYC. Perfect New York experience.
When you pay $152 for a steak you expect it to be as you ordered it.. we ordered medium and got rare..
As an apology we received a piece of cake even though we already ordered a large Souffle and Ice Cream but I guess they didn’t want to lose any money.
Also the pommes Aligot were what seemed to be the bottom of the pot, not a full portion and full of clumps.
I’ve eaten here many times and always order the same thing so I know how things should taste.
I also rarely write negative reviews but this one is well deserved.
I will say our waiter was very sweet but we were there for the food.
Strange experience there. all the staff seemed to care about was their closing at 3pm as it was a Sunday. We ordered drinks at the bar while waiting for rest of our party of 6 and they demanded a credit card to run the tab. Very limited and unusual menu on Sunday and had to ask for mustard twice. It is like they cannot even hide their sustain for he people they are serving. Have been going there for decades and can safely say that this was be last time.
The burger was great, but we felt very rushed by the wait staff to eat and get out. There was no time to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. All appetizers and entrees must be ordered together and they are quick to clear the table even if not finished with the appetizers.
Brunette hostess very rude and uninviting. Everything else was fantastic.
They're known for their burger (and it's really good!), but their other items are good too. For brunch, I love the polenta with fava beans, mushrooms and a sunny side up egg
Great atmosphere and service. Food was good but not exceptional. Little bland and too pricey for what you get.
We had a recommendation to go to Minetta for a great Hamburger - the hamburger was wonderful, thick, beautifully done (we chose medium-raw) and tasty. though Minetta is not your usual hamburger place, but rather a classy French restaurant where the other food also looked excellent.
Always love coming here
decent place foodwise but felt a bit impersonal - maybe that's just New York though
We chose to celebrate a family birthday because of a great prior experience at Minetta. Sadly, it disappointed. The seating for 6 was so squished that the waiter could barely squeeze between tables. We were uncomfortably crowded together. The signature black label burger was a bit cold by the time it arrived, and both were significantly underdone (rare vs our medium request) - the result of a rushed kitchen and overcrowded floor.
Despite it being a birthday, the staff did nothing to help us celebrate.
Minetta is resting on past laurels and has deteriorated significantly to nothing special but an overrated and overpriced spot.
Fantastic restaurant that is my go-to place every time I visit New York.
Service was below the usual standards I expect from Minetta. Waitress was making excuses. Black label burger was over cooked, asked for medium and arrived medium well +
Trendy tavern. Solid burgers. And love a place that still serves a true soufflé for dessert.
Absolutely wonderful. Our waitress was amazing, the food was amazing, everything was great. Just wished the sides were on the lunch menu that are on the dinner menu and that the tables were a bigger. Other than that, amazing!!!
Great food in a low-key, somewhat crowded, setting. Good wine list and friendly service, although the servers could be more attentive.
I liked the ambiance but it was extremly loud, we couldn’t talk in normal tone. The food was a disappointment. I had heard so much about the Black label burger, not worth the price. Very nice waitress, but it wasn’t enough to make us come back.
I was expecting way more out of food here. I always wanted to try their cote de boeuf and a burger but didn’t feel like it that night. So we got some veal, duck and a steak tartare. Duck was good but the rest nothing to brag about...
So probably next time those 2 things they are most famous for. Overall the place is nice and the service was amazing! Everyone is very efficient and polite!
Had a Black Label burger with fries at the bar for lunch, with one draft beer. After tip, my cost was $61. Delicious cheeseburger, but not something I would do again due to the cost. Minetta Tavern is a classic place and is worth a trip for anyone, local or visiting.
Far too expensive for the quality. Very long way to be served.a simple meal. Others who came later were were served way before us Waiters brusque and forgetful. Totally forgot a drank we ordered and it took a long time to finally get it.
Great food and ambience which we paired with a night at the local comedy cellar for an authentic NY experience. We came to try the highly recommended burgers but the steaks also looked good judging by expressions around us. Our Pate starter was devine with a sweetness of currants balancing the richness of the Pate. The premium burger was full of flavour and taken med-rare was perfectly juicy. It’s reputation means you do have to pay a premium but well worth it my opinion.
Not worth $30 for a burger. Service is ok, wouldn’t go back though. 90% fries and 10% burger. You’d get a better burger at Emily or Mu ramen.
Best hamburger in the USA. Hands down the best! We had souffle for dessert. Wish we had ordered two!
Like traveling back in time several decades in the best possible way. The tavern takes great care to ensure its patrons have consistently exceptional food and service. The black label burger is exquisite. I suggest ordering it medium or medium rare. This restaurant is a must-visit as frequently as your pocketbook will allow.
Great location, nice atmosphere and crisp, elegant table settings were, unfortunately, let down by a big disparity in the quality of the food. My lunch guest had a fabulous meal but my food was very overcooked. Although the service was attentive, nobody asked about our food during the meal or afterward. In retrospect, I should have sent my $33 burger back, but it’s always extremely awkward when dining with a guest because it ruins the occasion. At a restaurant that charges a premium for superior food, service, and ambiance, this feels like a very basic fail. A shame because I really wanted to like it.
I wish I'd had the option to select "maybe", as to whether I'd recommend this restaurant. Yes if service and ambience (which are superb) are key, no if value and food prep are key. All of our dishes were way too salty, my $52 veal chop was full of gristle in every bite, the spinach was nothing but tough stems with almost no leaves. Shocking that they have been awarded a Michelin star.
The legendary Black Label hamburger was nothing special. Food was all perfectly fine, just not outstanding
Solid effort on appetizers but mains were disappointing. Trout menierre was basically a tasteless trout with butter and lemon. Pastas lacked any pizazz. All in all, under value for the dining dollar.
Great family spot for Mothers Day lunch. Best burger in the city, and amazing cocktails!
Black label burger.. the bone marrow dish.. and the drinks made this a special visit. We came for lunch.. on the day we landed in NY (from Malaysia).. and this was our first meal in NY and it did not disappoint. Serving size and portions are ample and the drink option allowed us to start a celebratory holiday on the right foot.
The black label burger was alright but I don’t know if it is worth >$30. The bone marrow was awesome and steak frites was amazing!
Minetta Tavern was a small and lively place with great service and a buzzing atmosphere. The black label burger was fantastic and the scallops were amazing. I would recommend making reservations, even though the bar seemed like a great place to sit.
Never disappointed. Quick
Service great cocktails awesome food
We sat at the bar until our table was ready, enjoyed some great drinks.
When our table was ready the Resturant had a Great ambiance and the food was incredible. We visited this location for a milestone birthday. Was a great visit. Wait staff was very attentive and answered all the questions we had.
We had escargot appetizers and the ribeye for two for the main course. These were both great choices and come highly recommended.
Thank you Minetta Tavern.
The Black Label burger was truly outstanding. Cooked perfectly at medium rare and fries were great as well. Had the goat cheese salad and the oysters to start, also enjoyable. The woman that took care of us was informative and attentive as were the other staff members. Looking forward to returning in the near future.
