Over the course of its long history, the Tavern was frequented by various layabouts and hangers-on including Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Eugene O'Neill, E. E. Cummings, Dylan Thomas, and Joe Gould, as well as by various writers, poets, and pugilists.
Since its renovation, Minetta Tavern has best been described as "Parisian steakhouse meets classic New York City tavern."
We hope — and believe — that's a somewhat accurate description of the place.
What Insiders Are Saying
Minetta Tavern in Greenwich Village is home to some of the best steaks, chops, burgers, and overall feel good vibes that New York City has to offer.
Great food and ambience which we paired with a night at the local comedy cellar for an authentic NY experience. We came to try the highly recommended burgers but the steaks also looked good judging by expressions around us. Our Pate starter was devine with a sweetness of currants balancing the richness of the Pate. The premium burger was full of flavour and taken med-rare was perfectly juicy. It’s reputation means you do have to pay a premium but well worth it my opinion.
Not worth $30 for a burger. Service is ok, wouldn’t go back though. 90% fries and 10% burger. You’d get a better burger at Emily or Mu ramen.
Best hamburger in the USA. Hands down the best! We had souffle for dessert. Wish we had ordered two!
Like traveling back in time several decades in the best possible way. The tavern takes great care to ensure its patrons have consistently exceptional food and service. The black label burger is exquisite. I suggest ordering it medium or medium rare. This restaurant is a must-visit as frequently as your pocketbook will allow.
Great location, nice atmosphere and crisp, elegant table settings were, unfortunately, let down by a big disparity in the quality of the food. My lunch guest had a fabulous meal but my food was very overcooked. Although the service was attentive, nobody asked about our food during the meal or afterward. In retrospect, I should have sent my $33 burger back, but it’s always extremely awkward when dining with a guest because it ruins the occasion. At a restaurant that charges a premium for superior food, service, and ambiance, this feels like a very basic fail. A shame because I really wanted to like it.
I wish I'd had the option to select "maybe", as to whether I'd recommend this restaurant. Yes if service and ambience (which are superb) are key, no if value and food prep are key. All of our dishes were way too salty, my $52 veal chop was full of gristle in every bite, the spinach was nothing but tough stems with almost no leaves. Shocking that they have been awarded a Michelin star.
The legendary Black Label hamburger was nothing special. Food was all perfectly fine, just not outstanding
Solid effort on appetizers but mains were disappointing. Trout menierre was basically a tasteless trout with butter and lemon. Pastas lacked any pizazz. All in all, under value for the dining dollar.
Great family spot for Mothers Day lunch. Best burger in the city, and amazing cocktails!
The black label burger was alright but I don’t know if it is worth >$30. The bone marrow was awesome and steak frites was amazing!
Minetta Tavern was a small and lively place with great service and a buzzing atmosphere. The black label burger was fantastic and the scallops were amazing. I would recommend making reservations, even though the bar seemed like a great place to sit.
Never disappointed. Quick
Service great cocktails awesome food
We sat at the bar until our table was ready, enjoyed some great drinks.
When our table was ready the Resturant had a Great ambiance and the food was incredible. We visited this location for a milestone birthday. Was a great visit. Wait staff was very attentive and answered all the questions we had.
We had escargot appetizers and the ribeye for two for the main course. These were both great choices and come highly recommended.
Thank you Minetta Tavern.
The Black Label burger was truly outstanding. Cooked perfectly at medium rare and fries were great as well. Had the goat cheese salad and the oysters to start, also enjoyable. The woman that took care of us was informative and attentive as were the other staff members. Looking forward to returning in the near future.
Sehr coole NY-Atmosphäre, völlig überteuert für mittelmäßige Qualität der Speisen
Great Place, great food! Recommend!
Superb evening - we are regulars. Meal was fabulous and the service outstanding.
Rushed service, and a Kitchen that cannot follow instructions.
Underwhelmed and embarrassing! I had been talking up the burger for quite sometime and finally had the opportunity to bring my husband. Well, like I said...embarrassing!
I’ll have to think twice about going again.
Service was topnotch and the cocktails were great! We had a great time! Leslie and the rest of the crew were really good!
Food was good, burgers are usually excellent but I was suprised when the cook on mine was wrong (I asked for medium and received rare, had to send it back to be re-fired). Also, I don't recommend the spicy or green bloody Mary's, if I had to do again I would have done the traditional. My boyfriend's burger was properly cooked at medium-rare and his old fashions were excellent.
The location was ideal for meeting a friend coming from the opposite end of NYC. The menu was the most interesting I've seen of any brunch I've been to, I was torn between the mushroom with fava beans on polenta and the duck. My friend had the classic Norwegian smoked salmon with poached eggs and béarnaise. I went for the mushrooms it was good but not excellent. The crowd was older, the ambience blessedly relaxed and muted, even at noon it was quiet with some tables empty but by the time we left people were being asked to wait.
This is a great place ! Beautiful place and great service - hidden gem
Una vera delizia! L’hamburger più buono che abbia mai mangiato. Da non perdersi anche il soufflé al cioccolato. Consigliatissimo!!!
The host was rude. I had a reservation for 10pm for 3. I told her the other person might not be joining so she told me I’d have to wait. I waited 25 min. Then another 25 min after we sat to be served.
Black label burger best ever!
Great New York City landmark. We were there for brunch which was just okay. Staff were very nice. Just expensive for what you get. Two egg entrees, one appetizer, one drink and coffee = $125. Go for the history.
If you don’t come here, you’re a moron
Attention to detail and a nod to history are combined in this modern interpretation of classic steakhouse fare.
The Black Label Burger is the best burger I’ve ever had.
We had brunch. The atmosphere was great tables close together but the noise level was minimal. Menu presented a great variation of eggs and other breakfast food and all was excellent
Eh. Burger was supremely disappointing given its reputation. It was honestly dry. Needed a sauce or cheese or something. Also didn’t help they overlooked our “medium” patty request. Other things we had were tasty (esp. the bone marrow). Cool vibe and ambiance, but I would say go in w/ low expectations.
If you are looking for the best hamburger in NYC, then this is the place! Great old New York ambiance and attentive wait staff.
While the cocktails are "NY pricey", they are well made.
I first started coming to Minetta over 40 years ago. This time I brought my family and it was as special as ever. Delightful — and our waitress was a gem!
we had a lovely date night here and they very graciously accommodated us by putting us in the corner booth :) we love this place and will come back more often now!
Awesome lunch, highly recommend the burger + fries!
Ordered a med-med rare black label burger where everyone in my party ordered a med or med well burger but my burger came out well done. Asked the server beforehand to give me the rarest burger of the three. Did not happen.
