M Restaurant at the Morris House
I went for dinner with friends on a Wednesday evening. We sat outside in courtyard under the clear canopy. There was no rain nor threat of rain but had there been, we would have been fine. Started with two dozen fresh and exceptionally plump oysters accompanied by two dipping sauces but I never bothered to try those other than the standard. For my main course I had the tilefish which was a new fish to me. It was midway between flaky and rich. The sauce and accompanying greens were delightful.
Throughout our meal a gentleman fingerpicked his guitar sang classics from Doc Watson to Dylan to Taylor to Stones. He has a sweet unforced voice and a demeanor that took you back to the days his appearance evokes, the 60's and early 70's. Great evening!
Restaurant was almost empty. Wedding outside, which must overwhelm the kitchen. 2 tables inside, and we both received apologies for the delays.
Very limited and eclectic menu.
The food was average at best. We have been coming to the M for many years but recently the food has not been very exciting. The food is overpriced and even the cheese tray was less than tasty. In the past the cheese tray was explained to us by the staff, not this time. We are very disappointed and will not visit the M again.
We love the fact the restaurant has a large outdoor dining area with a cover so regardless on the weather you can enjoy the outdoor dining experience. Extra points for being a pet friendly restaurant so we can bring our pup to share the experience. Our pup received so much love from the wait staff and other guests it really brings joyful memories to us.
We made a reservation so that we could listen to live music. When we arrived the hostess told us we would be able to hear the music from the patio. The live music never appeared. The atmosphere of the outside garden was beautiful. It was a hectic night and our service was so, so. The wait staff was active though, so I think they were a bit overwhelmed. Our appetizer (antipasto) was quite good, fresh and of fine quality. When my salad with lentils appeared, I think the waitress could see the shock on my face. The lettuce was old (at each ends of the tear there was dark discoloration). The sprouts were dried out and there were only 3 small orange wedges in the salad. My husband's flank steak was quite good. So the three star is because they failed to tell us (even when we asked) that there was no live music. And my salad, which was my main meal, was more like a vending machine quality. Parts of this restaurant is 5 stars and parts are closer to 2 star.
Good vibes and great food. Service was great. Will come again
We wanted to sit outside but it was a chilly night, so we sat in a very pretty dining room with
red accented walls. Had the crudo and summer greens salad first, then the mushroom ravioli and pork chop for main courses- all of which were delicious. Great, attentive service all around. Hope to return soon for dining al fresco.
What a treat! Invited a group of friends to sit in the courtyard for happy hour and we weren’t disappointed. One feels transported to a pre-war country inn. With the flowers in full bloom, the entire property is a visual feast. And great service to boot! Vince, our server, was professional and attentive, and made excellent cocktail recommendations. I had the pork sliders and they were scrumptious. A pity more people aren’t aware of this great restaurant, it is truly an affordable hidden gem in our city. Will be back very soon!
We had the worst dining experience we have ever had at M - on Mother's Day to boot. I wanted to take my mom somewhere special, and M restaurant was recommended to me and appealed to me due to the patio seating rain or shine in their tent. I made the reservation a few weeks earlier, and we arrived on a stormy, chilly day with crazy wind and rain. The hostess led us to our table, and there was about an inch of pooled water under the table where they wanted to seat us, meaning our feet would get soaked. They did not even acknowledge this, and we awkwardly asked to be seated at a table that didn't have water collecting underneath. They obliged, and we were seated elsewhere on the patio, where shortly after, the wind blew the rain underneath and pooled at our feet. We didn't want to request another change and be rude, so we just accepted this. We ordered off of an extremely limited menu (not the typical brunch menu) and then sat. We waited for over an hour without any food or any notice that they were running late or any apologies. My mom was being very patient and sweet, but I felt awful - she was cold, her feet were sitting in a puddle, and we had been waiting for over an hour with nothing to eat. I went inside and asked to speak with a manager and expressed my disappointment. She apologized and did what she could about the leaky tent (which wasn't much) and the food came shortly after and was AWFUL. Every single thing we ordered was completely unseasoned and cooked poorly. My father got a brioche breakfast sandwich that looked and tasted worse than a Wawa breakfast sandwich. The food was awful (especially for the price!) and if everything else had been better, we may have been able to stomach it, but we were so worn out by the experience that we just wanted to leave. The waiters were really nice and did their best, but everything was unacceptably bad, especially for a special occasion. I would avoid at all costs!
The food was great! As was the service. Christian was friendly and accommodating. We will definitely be back!
It was terrible. The service and food was not good at all
Hello, I am saddened to hear that your night was not up to par. As you can see from other reviews, we are known for our food and service, so I hope you will be willing to give us another try. Please ask for me; if I am in, I would be honored to meet you and show you that we can be, and usually are, better than the less than par experience you had. Thank you, Deborah - one of the owners at M Restaurant
Love the ambience and warmth and knowledge of the staff. They accommodated my lactose issue thoughtfully.
Happy hour bar prices are terrific. The bread is superb, hot and crunchy. Been here many times since it first opened. Last visit, I was disappointed with a scallop and squid ink pasta entree for $30 in which there were only two thin slices of scallop. Pasta shape was interesting and tasty, but dense to chew.
We celebrated our 19th anniversary at M. Dinner was excellent, the service and atmosphere was perfect. Everyone was friendly and very welcoming making the entire evening special. Now M is our favorite restaurant. Looking forward to going again soon with friends. Definitely recommend to all.
A beautiful garden setting . I ate at the bar and had one of there fun and tonic specials, and then a wonderful pasta dish with scallops. Wonderful.
The appetizer of salmon and scallops had much too much garnish of pickled celery . The mixture was not complimentary. My Ink squid gemell was basically a bowl full of pasta with what appeared to be one scallop cut in half on top. Tasty but way over priced. My wife's chicken was fine but overpriced. I can't believe a "fine" dining restaurant anywhere doesn't have Benedictine & Brandy (B&B) in their bar.
The best part about the meal was a very pleasant waiter who was generous of spirit and humor.
Creative menu with options for vegetarians. Beet salad was especially delicious. Would have preferred more options for dessert.
This was the first time dining at M Restaurant. We have been going to the Walnut Street Theater for 30 years and we never noticed this gem of a restaurant. It was very comfortable and the decor was very nicely done. The food was great and plentiful with great desserts as well. Drinks were very good and were just what we ordered. The prices were average for a restaurant of this caliber. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for theater night, date night or dinner with friends.
The food was really good and exactly what we wanted for Easter Sunday Brunch. We ate outside in the garden which was very nice but lacking a bit in bloomed flowers (compared to pics on the website). Unfortunately the service was not really great which didn't make much sense since the restaurant was not very crowded. For example, I had to ask twice for a spoon for my coffee (no utensils on the table) and had to ask twice for salt.
We arrived at M at 615 we had show tickets and let the waiter know this. It took 15 minutes to get our wine. We ordered a cheese platter at the same time. Wine come no cheese after about 20 minutes I found a manager told her to cancel cheese and bring our food by now it is 715. She brought the cheese and said it was comped. Our food got there we had to eat the ravioli quickly and our 2nd glass of wine quickly got out of Resturant at 750. For an 8 show. No time for coffee.will not be back the patio was nice but not sure I like all the dogs that are welcomed.
We dined at M restaurant on 4/13. The outdoor patio is beautiful. Our server, Vince, was friendly, warm, and accommodating. The food was outstanding. The chef adapted the menu to accommodate food allergies. We would definitely return. It seems to be a hidden gem of the Washington Square area.
Underwhelmed, forgettable and we spent a lot of money for our family of 5 to feel this way. Two of us got the bass and the portion size was so small it was laughable. The consensus was the flavor profile was extremely bland. Two others got the ribeye... and felt it was eh. We also got the lamb chop appetizer, tomato red pepper soup, garden salad and cheese plate. Nothing cutting edge or a perfection of a classic. Mediocre at best. Will not return. Service was fine.
Nice ambiance, comfortable, great service and good food. Great value. On our last st for a return to Philly.
Had a Pre-theatre dinner with my hysband. Enjoyed a special 3 course dinner for ticket holders and it was excellent. Definitely plan on returning and enjoying some of the small plate items on the menu.
A bit of old Philly. The pre-theater menu was perfect. Will be back.
Delicious meals in lovely, intimate dining room.
We were in Philadelphia for a few days and had tickets to the Walnut Street Theatre! This restaurant was within walking distance to the theater and close to a parking garage. Small dining room but well appointed. Service was great and we found the entire meal perect!
The spring salad with a citrus vinaigrette dressing was a great blend of flavors. Steak cooked to desired temperature and not one item needed extra seasoning! Very nice wine list. Enjoyable pre-show meal.
Wonderful atmosphere, superb service, delicious food. We will be back!
Dinner before a show. Good experience, would recommend
A wonderful selection of French and domestic wines - under $50! It is the best wine deal in Philadelphia. The chef came out to make sure we were doing well, and we were. The setting is lovely and the food quite good.
From the moment I checked our group in, to the the final goodbye this place is spot on... the staff were friendly, efficient yet unobtrusive-but always circulated to ensure no need was unmet or anyone was lacking for anything.
The food was excellent, and suggestion of wine was also appropriate. Def will revisit this establishment—and await Spring for their garden seating to open !
Tremendous server- Vince
Quiet atmosphere in comfortable historic surroundings. The chef is creative and the waitstaff attentive.
Portions great for sharing.
Worth the trip.
We were staying at hotel and chose to eat there one night. It was lovely. Quick and attentive service and excellent food.
No sea bass, but was still on limited menu. Very disappointed.
The food was outstanding, the drinks were great, and the staff was extremely friendly. 10/10 would recommend!
Took my girlfriend for our valentine's day dinner and had a wonderful experience. the food was phenomenal as were the cocktails. The manager, Andrew, clearly is working hard to make sure each guest has a good experience, and made that very clear to us. Even taking some time out of his busy night to show us the courtyard and hotel. The restaurant is beautiful and is perfect for a date night. Will certainly be going back.
Ambiance was great : pretty and intimate . Servers appeared harried. Food was good but not exceptional. Dessert options were non existent : one dessert was offered and that was it. Never came across that before.
Nice, cozy restaurant with great ambiance. The food was great. Waiters were short-staffed that night, so service was slower than it should have been.
While the food was OK, the service was awful. Nice enough but very very unorganized. I don’t know if someone called out sick and they had to get bus boys to wait tables but my husband and I will not be going back again. Forgot to bring us bread, we had one drink and we’re not asked if we wanted anymore, hey Lynne they brought us the desert never asked if we wanted coffee or any other beverage. We inquired about the three for 45 and was told that it included appetizer main and dessert. However what they failed to tell us until after our meal was that they only had one dessert which was cheesecake and neither of us like it. If we had known this we would’ve went the other way and ordered separately off of the menu.
Was a lovely Valentine's day experience. Food was very good. Some delay in main entree but manager adjusted bill for that hiccup in service. Can't beat the romantic atmosphere and the glass of champagne and roses topped the night off beutifully.
