The Best Burgers in Richmond

Richmond is one of those “under the radar” foodie cities that delights diners every time they visit. From the modern streets of Carytown’s “Mile of Style” to converted 17th-century buildings, restaurants pop up in the most surprising of places- including some amazing burger joints. But where can diners find the best burger in Richmond? Welcome to our Tastemakers List. We’ve mapped out the best beef, chicken, and even vegan burgers to tantalize the taste buds. Burgers have come a long way in the past few years. No longer relegated to greasy fast food joints, now diners can head downtown and enjoy steak mince patties with pepper jam and bacon at one of Richmond’s top restaurants. Luxurious surroundings and filet mignon sliders take the place of the traditional burger in the Capitol District, but traditionalists can keep it real with a range of sauces, fried onions, and pickles over in Midlothian. Book a table for the best burger in Richmond tonight- just leave enough room for fries, too.

The Daily Kitchen and Bar is a relaxing, nature inspired joint, from the winding tree décor to the organic and vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options on the menu. That extends to their exciting range of sandwiches and handhelds. The veggie burger is a house-made secret, and can come with or without cheddar cheese. The turkey burger is a great lean option, with fresh guacamole, but the Angus burgers are the star of the show. Juicy and packed with trimmings into a brioche bun, diners come back just for these burgers alone.

Tarrant’s is a little piece of Richmond history. The building’s retained much of the charm of the original 19th century drugstore, and the ambiance inside the restaurant is old school in all the best ways. The varied menu appeals to seafood fans and carnivores alike, with a couple of burgers worth writing home about. Billed as simply “hamburger”, the house burger is a firm nod to American tradition and flavor, with or without cheese or bacon. Ask about happy hour, and don’t forget to book.

Originally a 19th century tobacco warehouse, this historic building first became a restaurant in 1977. Today, it’s one of the most elegant and popular dining and entertainment destinations in Richmond. There are two floors for dining, a cocktail lounge and even a nightclub- and what is arguably the best burger in Richmond: The TC Burger. Head to the 1st floor bar and get ready for a double burger with grilled onions, American cheese instead of cheddar, salad- and wash it all down with a specialty Tiki cocktail.

The lure of the wood fired gill is undeniable. That smoky, outdoorsy smell is so nostalgic. Pair it with top quality USDA Choice beef and upscale yet welcoming surroundings, and that’s the winning recipe for Firebirds’ on Belvedere. The highest quality beef isn’t just reserved for the steaks. The burgers get the premium treatment, too. The Durango Burger is a big winner with guests, combining pepper jack cheese with an extra kick of spice, roasted garlic ranch and onions for a mouth-watering treat.

Take a break from shopping at Short Pump and take a seat in the relaxing, wood-lodge style surroundings of Firebird’s. Their lunch menu has no less than six burger offerings, ranging from the house cheeseburger to a ribeye steak creation that’s out of this world. The smokehouse burger combines applewood-smoked bacon, cheddar and java BBQ sauce, while the grilled chicken option includes the bite of crisp pickles and sweet yet tangy red onions. The perfect antidote to too much retail therapy.

Tarrant’s has always been a key component in the Richmond community. Once, a 19th century pharmacy. Now, a classic dining joint offering brunch, lunch, dinner and a menu so varied anyone would struggle not to find something they loved. Tarrant’s comfort food offerings include a very well-priced hamburger, cooked to order, with or without cheese, bacon, or any of the other usual accouterments. Simple, straight to the point, and possibly the best burger in Richmond. Book and let us know.

Stunning views and a fun, nautical theme make The Boathouse one of Richmond’s favorite restaurant families. They pride themselves on locally sourced ingredients and being an integral part of the community, offering their space up for various local events. Their burger option is the Boathouse Burger, which uses only 7 Hills beef, farmed in Virginia. Add in cheddar, bacon, and a tempting side of house-made slaw, and that’s a burger to enjoy at any time.

Scott’s Addition is one of those neighborhoods that seems to attract any number of beautiful, contemporary restaurants. Brenner Pass fits right in. Pale wood, white furniture and pendant lights create a bright, open and welcoming space; the perfect blank canvas for a menu inspired by Alpine culture. This might not seem like the obvious place to hunt down the best burger in Richmond, but that Alpine flavor combines with ground brisket, short rib, and speck to create the Fondue Burger. As the name suggests, the meaty morsel holds together with fondue instead of traditional cheese, for extra melt-in-the-mouth potential.

Homemades by Suzanne is as genuine as it sounds; delicious home cooked treats, served lovingly since 1982. The historic John Marshall Ballrooms is an elegant and desirable venue, so it seems almost bizarre that between 11 am and 2 pm weekdays it’s possible to pop in and grab one of the best burgers in Richmond. Suzanne’s sandwiches include a succulent Angus burger that’s a hit with regulars, but keep an eye on the specials as treats like a salmon burger pop up from time to time.

Helen’s is a neighborhood favorite, beloved by Fan locals and visitor venturing outside Carytown. The menu changes regularly, making the most of seasonal ingredients, but there’s one staple that diners can always look forward to: Helen’s Burger. Juicy Wagyu beef, apple-smoked bacon, sharp cheddar and salad all served up in a homemade bun. A relaxed atmosphere, excellent service, and quite possibly the best burger in Richmond- that’s Helen’s.
