Stephen Starr brings his signature brand of hospitality and design to the nation’s capital with the opening of Le Diplomate, located at 14th & Q. Serving lunch, brunch and dinner, the stylish 260 seat restaurant transports diners to the beloved cafés of Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris. The extensive menu features a variety of classic dishes including Onion Soup Gratinee, Steak Frites, and Poulet Roti as well as contemporary bistro fare, with dishes such as Shaved Veal Tongue with Mache and Bavette de Boeuf à l’Echalote. A thoughtfully curated wine list and cocktail program perfectly complements the cuisine and creates an environment suitable for romantic dinners or lively group gatherings. In warmer weather, enjoy dining "en plein air" in the stunning outdoor café where you can take in the bustling energy of DC while sipping on the perfect kir royale.

One of the best meals my partner and I ate in DC. Everything was amazing! The red craft wine was okay for cheap wine. We had the oysters, french onion soup, three cheeses, and steak. All so so so good. An absolute beautiful meal. The service was outstanding. We were celebrating our anniversary and my partner’s graduation from his masters program. We were provided complimentary champagne and blueberry cookies. Our server was fantastic.

Nothing is going to blow your mind here, but it is always a reliably strong dining option. You can pretty much guarantee everyone you know is going to find something they like, so its a great option to recommend to visitors.

Over rated restaurant. We were seated at the worst location in the restaurant. We asked to move but manager said wait time 45 minutes long.

We had amazing experience at Le Diplomate. We ordered a selection of seafood (fruits de mer), salads, and foie gras. Belon oysters, escargots, and the petit plateau were excellent! The salmon in particular was really refreshing. The green salad was simple yet so good. The winner, however, was the dessert. We tried the Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée which was divine (simply one of the best crème brûlée ever) and profiteroles (which was also good). In all, we were so happy to go to Le Diplomate. Service was efficient and our waiter was just the best (Nous avons eu l'occasion de parler français). Alors, merci, Le Diplomate! Nous reviendrons bientôt.

great waiter, great service...food was okay. Nothing special. The atmosphere was fine until some guy sat on the sidewalk in from of the entrance and screamed "somebody help me! for about 5 minutes." I felt bad for the guy but also wondered why the restaurant didn't do anything.

We had outside seating and it worked perfectly. Very comfortable set-up. The 2 hrs. allowed for a group of 4 was enough time, and it is helpful to have this guide. Server was patient, service was very efficient, food excellent.

Difficult to get reservations here so very pleased it worked out this time.

The bread for starters was great. Service was excellent and non-intrusive. The outside patio was pleasant. It was a great place to celebrate my birthday.

Ample sunlight through high glass ceilings, hanging planters, Fleur de Lis motif floor tiles, spacious marble countertops, delicately weaved wooden chairs, sophisticated menu layout, aesthetically pleasing contrasting color combination of green/red with a hint of faded golds and ambers ..And ofcourse authentic food right on point! 💯

I’m assuming, due to COVID that the menu was smaller. A few selections we were looking forward to having again were no longer available.

Le Diplomate is an excellent restaurant, modelled after the Grands Brasseries in Paris, but better. The bread basket is to die for. I had probably the best lobster of my life. Other food was very good. The only shortcoming is that they dispensed with the valet parking because of Covid and the closest garage closes at 10. Street parking is limited so if you are driving, parking is a hassle. Hopefully they will reinstate the valet parking service,

As a long time admirer of the food at the restaurant, I was disappointed. I felt that the C team was in the kitchen. The pea soup lacked flavor &salt and was overly creamy. The soft shell crab was overly heavily crusted and one could not taste crab. The dressing tasted like mayonnaise-period.

The fries were pale I like them brown and crispy

It was very “okay” but years past it was “memorable”. Great bread basket and onion soup; good steak frites and disappointing duck l’orange. Very personable and knowledgeable waiter.

Was perfect for birthday celebration. All had great time. Service was outstanding and food amazing. Only wrinkle was a friend tried to send us a gift of a bottle of champagne that day and was told he needed to do so two days in advance. Not sure why but to be aware.

The “special” softshell crab sandwich was awful. Tiny bit of tasteless crab enveloped in a mound of greasy breading, definitely not up to Diplomate’s usual standards. We both hardly touched our meals. And the pate was nothing like what the menu described. Worst food we have ever had here.

What a treat! Beautiful night in DC with outdoor seating at Le Diplomate. From the bread to the butter to the wine and beyond, delicious and delightful evening.
We had reduced our group of 4 to 3 so not the perfect table but that’s on us. Thoroughly enjoyable evening all around. Thank you, Le Diplomate!

I ordered steak frites and the meat was very tough. The frites were good. We also ordered profiteroles for dessert and the crust tasted stale. I was disappointed compared with my previous meals there, especially at the extremely high prices they charge now. Regarding the ambience, nearly all of the customers were sitting outdoor, which looked very pleasant. The sparsely occupied indoor area felt somewhat depressing even though it made for easier conversation.

Daniel was one of the best waiters I have had in the 5 1/2 years I have lived in DC. I could not get the WiFi to work in one of the street eateries. He graciously offered his hotspot so I could continue doing work. That is above and beyond, which simply doesn't happen much anymore. I ordered my steak medium rare and it came out almost well done. He apologized and immediately corrected the order. Additionally, he made an amazing wine recommendation for my entree.

I always enjoy going to this restaurant, but the service has become a problem. We had to continually flag down someone to even come to our table, and when they did things were delayed or forgotten. I am happy to pay these prices for the food, but I expect it should also include a professional wait staff that is attentive.

The food was great! We have eaten at Le Diplomate several times in the past. The food is always great. The service on this visit was very poor, unlike our prior visits. The waiter took our appetizer order and came back 20 minutes later to tell us she forgot to place our order & did not remember what we wanted. She also was quick to inform us we needed to be done with our meal within the 1.5 hour time frame. Our entire meal was delayed. We had to flag her down to order dessert and again to get our check. We observed other tables having similar issues with our waiter while we were there. The restaurant was also very cold and noisy. We were disappointed with the evening but will try to eat at Le Diplomate again because the food has always been good.
