What Insiders Are Saying
This French bistro is the place to see anyone who’s ever been on “Meet the Press". The food is also delicious.
Best dinner ever!!!!! Service and food
couldn’t have been any better. Great way to end a great trip. Thanks
The only drawback; a customer came over to our table to remove a chair. We were very disturbed by his action; wanting to avoid any confrontations and immediately left the restaurant.
Have a great evening
One of our favorite spots in DC. It feels like you are at a cafe in Paris.
Love the food here and the ambiance. It was a very busy night which is why the bathrooms were less than desirable.
This was my second time at Le Diplomate and it was just as elegant, delicious, quality French fare as I remembered. We had a slighting serving snafu and our waiter could not have been nicer about correcting it and noticing before we even mentioned it. Noise level was high as it was a crowded Saturday night.
The ambiance and food was incredible. The server was not entirely friendly. When we decided against a bottle of wine, he seemed insulted. Throughout dinner there were several moments he seemed off-putting.
Love the ambiance! Food was amazing, especially the cheese board. Only con was the loud noise; luckily we were able to move outside.
Treated like a number, with a total lack of personal service. Asked to sit at a window table and they told me aggressively that I didn’t put in a request. Didn’t even offer an alternative. Really disappointing.
Lovely food, service, and ambiance. High expectations entirely met.
Great menu. Excellent service. More vegetarian options might be nice. The mushroom tart was good but not as spectacular as I’d remembered. Overall a really standout restaurant.
Le Diplomate is a place that you go to get some great honest, yet simple food. French cooking, to Americans, resembles fancy techniques and ingredients, small plates, and elegance. This is a fallacy that we should soon forget. French bistros like le Diplomate offer hearty simple meals with quality ingredients and honest techniques. Cheese selection is great and the food unpretentious. Service is great and ambiance is lovely and warm. The food is pricey but not moreso than other Washington DC establishments of similar quality and exclusivity.
I recommend this place for special nights, date nights, and business lunches and dinners. It is truly a good place and it’s perfect for the DC diner.
Went for dinner on a Wednesday night at about 7:15. The restaurant was already hopping. The patio was full of people enjoying the mild weather. Inside was almost at capacity. We were seated in the back room and ordered a bottle of wine while we perused the menu. This is a classic French Bistro. The decor, ambiance and menu is pure Paris. Our waitress was not french but she did have a foreign accent. She had a bit of trouble understanding us. She was also very soft spoken, so we had a hard time understanding her. She seemed very anxious for us to order and kept coming back every few minutes to check if we were ready to order. When we did order, our food came in just the right amount of time to allow us to have a glass of wine and sample the wonderful variety of breads that came to our table before our 1st course arrived. We had salade vert that were very fresh with a flavorful dressing and then the roasted chicken and the salmon. Both were excellent. Roast chicken is a simple dish but hard for a restaurant to produce upon order. It is either overcooked or flabby. This roast chicken was what makes roast chicken a classic french dish. Crisp skin and meltingly tender, juicy meat in a jus that was very flavorful but not fatty. The potato puree was delicious and the haricot vert were tender crisp. My husbands salmon with lentils was cooked perfectly also. He did enjoy it along with some of my chicken. We shared the Profiteroles and had coffee. It was a delightful meal and the restaurant is lively and charming. Great evening. Great people watching.
We were seated outside, because the noise level inside was very high. Steak au poivre was excellent; the steak-frites was good, however the frites were more like 'American' than French fries and way too salty. The desserts were fabulous; le "pichet" de vin was a very good surprise.
Always a treat!
Food was exceptional- service was better.
It's a hopping place. Great everything. Would recommend to anyone.
Very good food at reasonable price. Dessert was great but was expecting more considering how much it’s been hyped up. Was brought a birthday candle as I mentioned in booking but the server just brought it over without saying anything.
The service was the best I’ve ever had. The server was super friendly and super knowledgeable about the different menu items and informed us of all the different foods we order.
Le Diplomate was good and fun. Very busy on a Monday night which made the ambiance very good. Will go back. it is not inexpensive but it is DC.
Best restaurant find in a long time!!! Located in a charming neighborhood, the ambiance and vibe of the restaurant are fantastic as well as the food!!
Was literally one of the best dinner experiences. Superb service. I love a waiter that recommends food and drinks. He did and he nailed it. The fish was delicious as well as the beef. I would definitely return. It was a special night.
Perfect in every way! The scallops and duck were are favorite dishes. So delicious!
Outstanding food, service and restaurant. We had softshell crab and duck with orange sauce. Both were incredible! Very energetic vibe.
Food was AMAZING. I had the steak frites and it was prolly one of the best steaks I’ve ever had
10/10 as always, food is always amazing. And the service is above and beyond. The space is a little cramped but it gives a very authentic French dining experience.
We were a table of 8 the waiter had an annoyed expression the whole time he had to serve our table! I love Le Diplomat and every time I come to DC I make a point of eating here, just wish I didn’t have to look into the face of annoyance every time we asked for something...
Always a great bet with incredible ambiance
Excellent food and a broad choice of wines to compliment your meal. I would give the place 5 stars but in the end, we asked for decaf Cappucino and received caffeinated. This kept us up the entire night when we had a flight the next day.
Celebrating our anniversary, dinner was delicious. Our waiter even brought us a glass of champagne which made our night out even more special.
Everything was very good except I was moved to the different table after I sat at the window table.
This is our GO-TO place, although we never get there often enough. The oysters were fresh and delicious; the bread basket is always amazing. our entrees, scallops and trout were perfect. The manager, Lenny, was very gracious and generous. We had a delicious dinner and a wonderful evening. Next time, I will get the steak frites! I'm READY!!
Food was incredible 💕; gourgeres were wonderful. The trout was just amazing. We were so impressed, we immediately made reservations for brunch the next day 😁
Le Diplomate is my all time favorite resturant- anywhere. My children love it, my wife loves it and I love Le Diplomate. Le Diplomate is always a treat whenever we're vistiing DC.
We've been to Le Diplomate many times, I just thought this time was OK. Our server was not particularly friendly or helpful compared to previous servers we had. We went for a late lunch at 3:30 PM and it was still brunch. Meh...
Thank you brunch for mom
Christin was a fabulous waitress. Her service was impeccable and her food suggestions were outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed our brunch. Can’t wait to return to ale Diplomate.
One of the best places to go for drinks and dinner. Great atmosphere and the food is fantastic!
We had a good experience service was very quick food was excellent.
