What Insiders Are Saying
An Oakland original brings its A-game to the Mission. Hawker Fare is a restaurant we find ourselves at again and again.
Amazing food and cocktails!
Really good but chilly spices missing. I guess pandering to the American palette. We got some fresh cut chillies on the side and mixed them in. Did the job.
And yes I have been to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.
So thrilled to find out they are serving food from Laos. We’ve traveled there twice and can say that the food at Hawker Fare is definitely on par it’s what we ate in Laos. So delicious. And different from Thai food. Give it a try. There were lots of happy eaters there. And the atmosphere is like a trip to South East Asia.
Awesome, we shared food and everything was great!
Asian street food prepared for white people that pay too much. Over cooked and bland.
Fresh ingredients and well-prepared (although not spicy enough for my taste) Thai dishes. The room is loud and lively. Perfect for a large group looking for a quick and satisfying meal.
Underwhelming food and drinks.
Great street food from Laos. Fresh and spicy. Interesting and a bit of noisy.
They were out of a few of the dishes and beers, service was friendly but erratic - everything else was great.
It wasn't a busy night at all with lots of empty tables but the service was inattentive. Nobody followed up, asked how things were, offered to get more drinks or said goodbye as we left (only 2 other tables seated when at the time of our departure).
The food is good but wasn’t special. I’ve had better Lao dishes elsewhere, and for much less.
Great food and great variety of dishes
Had a fun birthday dinner with a group of friends! No problem making a res and seating half the group. Fun drinks and good food! Service was adequate
We were a party of 5 seated at a table at the end of the bar. The food was really excellent, especially the shrimp with penang curry. Our only complaint is the noise level. We managed to hold a conversation without yelling at one another; however, it was definitely well beyond what we prefer. On the other hand, he food was so good that we will be back.
Pros: Excellent food and service.
Cons: Extremely uncomfortable chairs. Restaurant is extremely loud, which sort of ruined the dining experience. Please add some noise-reduction panelling.
Hawker Fare rates highly because it has a lively atmosphere, yet conversations are possible. The food is unusual, tasty and impressively presented. That said, it really is not a place for a person who cannot eat spicy dishes. However, they are careful to have four dishes that anyone, including a 6 year old, could handle and they were delicious. Because of its fiery nature. one dish was rated inedible, even by the three diners at the table who always can eat hot food. The seating in the restaurant is by and large not comfortable because of the metal folding chairs. Even so, their brilliant red color contributed to the restaurant's overall visual ambiance -- festive and cheerful.
Fun, lively atmosphere...male host was not very pleasant, but all good otherwise...
If you want some of the most flavorful food you have ever eaten, then you should eat here.
The food was delicious, start to finish. My only disappointment was the panang curry. Although the flavor was delicious, the broth was too thin and there wasn’t enough squash and protein. We were there on a Saturday evening for dinner and it was loud enough that we were constantly repeating ourselves.
Had an amazing time at Hawker Fare. The food was delicious and the wine tasty. I’d recommend this place to anyone who’s looking for a fun night out.
Whole fish dish was outta this world. Cool vibe, wicked cocktails.
Lively bar scene but mediocre food.
Well I love home style meals and loads of flavor. The dishes we tried packed a punch. We ordered the cauliflower laab (yummy!) and the beer nuts to go with our delicious cocktail (virgin sacrifice).
The main course we chose were the chickens - bbq and fried - both equally delicious in their own right. The sauce for the bbq chicken was my favorite. Was not a big fan of the fried chicken sauce.
Jasmine rice is always a wonderful side dish for me and this was done well.
The service was impeccable, but bathrooms could have been cleaner and it was REALLY hard to hear just across the table.
We took my niece here for her 18th birthday and had a blast. The ambiance was fun and lively for an 18 year old and the staff was kind enough to being her soft drink in one of the tiki glasses so we could decorate it with "happy birthday" wooden tiki umbrellas we had brought. The food was fantastic, especially the pork belly and shrimp panang curry. The staff were awesome as they lit the cake for us and brought it out so we could sing happy birthday! It was a blast and I recommend bringing your loved ones for their birthday party if you want a lively and fun venue!
Went for my birthday dinner with my husband and it was our second time there. It's such a great anytime option! Delicious and creative food, solid service, lively ambiance, and fun cocktials. Always a solid choice for a celebration or just fun night out. We will definitely be back again! Also very gluten free friendly!
Amazing food! The dishes we ordered were spicier than many other restaurants, so that's something to be mindful of when dining here. One other thing to be aware of, the cocktails are very sweet (but that might be expected when ordering cocktails). The coconut ice cream dessert is amazing.
This place is great for tikki drinks and hearty, spicy meat dishes. But, I'm surprised and disappointed that Hawker Fare does not offer more healthy vegetarian food items on the menu. Everything is meat, meat, and more meat. There are only 2 vegetable dishes on the menu, and they are side dishes. I would love to see them add some good emerald noodles or other more plant-based options.
Fantastic spot - a true gem. Great food - tasty, healthy, DELICIOUS - in a fun space. Attentive service. Two thumbs up. Love it!
/sigh, not sure why this Paige gurl keeps showing up at my reservations. Is this a bug in the product?
Great ambiance and energy. Food and service was good.
It's kinda loud , the food is great and the drinks are decent. However the service is slow , especially at the bar. Go knowing it will take some time and enjoy the great food
The food was great and not like anything we usually get at Thai restaurants. However, you will be happier if you like spicy food, because a lot of it is quite spicy. The lotus blossom sundae was a treat to share. Service was casual but good. Our 10 year old daughter had some chicken and rice, but all the veggies were quite spicy, so I can’t recommend it for people visiting SF with kids.
Fantastic! Even better than the Oakland spot. We ordered 3 dishes - each as incredible as the next. Don't miss UMAMI heaven 'brussel sprouts in bean sauce', the 'crispy rice ball salad', and decadent 'braised pork belly' with a side of jasmine rice to sop up the juices... nom, nom!
Spicy and different - absolutely loved this place
Everything is delicious here. One of my favorite spots! Don't miss the blistered green beans :)
This is a fabulous and fun restaurant. The food is outstanding and the service is great.
Absolutely the best Thai I have ever had sooooo delicious
Very tasty, spicy Lao food. Service attentive. Attractive restaurant, lively atmosphere.
While the food was tasty the music took a bit the pleasure out of the ambiance. Noise level was at 4 bars which this review says "energetic." But was irritating. And this was an early dinner not even a filled restaurant.
The 4 of us found it crazy loud we couldn't hear each other. When the music hangs you up...you need get out. Probably would not go back because of that. A low point for bright food.
Eclectic and fun. Always inventive. Hawker Fare is not fine dining, but you will have dishes here that are on no other Bay Area menus and, if they are, Hawker Fare will do them better. Rustic, pungent, delicious without a shred of pretension. My only gripe is the metal folding chairs, while authentic no doubt for street food vendors, are cold and too short for the tables!
