What Insiders Are Saying
An Oakland original brings its A-game to the Mission. Hawker Fare is a restaurant we find ourselves at again and again.
Everything is delicious here. One of my favorite spots! Don't miss the blistered green beans :)
Absolutely the best Thai I have ever had sooooo delicious
Very tasty, spicy Lao food. Service attentive. Attractive restaurant, lively atmosphere.
While the food was tasty the music took a bit the pleasure out of the ambiance. Noise level was at 4 bars which this review says "energetic." But was irritating. And this was an early dinner not even a filled restaurant.
The 4 of us found it crazy loud we couldn't hear each other. When the music hangs you up...you need get out. Probably would not go back because of that. A low point for bright food.
Eclectic and fun. Always inventive. Hawker Fare is not fine dining, but you will have dishes here that are on no other Bay Area menus and, if they are, Hawker Fare will do them better. Rustic, pungent, delicious without a shred of pretension. My only gripe is the metal folding chairs, while authentic no doubt for street food vendors, are cold and too short for the tables!
New year’s Eve was loud and rowdy but we had great and unusual food, good but pricey and small drinks, and solid service despite the festivities. Fun evening overall.
When the start of the evening is miserable, it affects the whole experience. The host had obviously a very bad day and he let us know about it. Surly, rude, visibly angry. No hello, murderous looks, throwing menus on the table. Observed the guy and we were not the only party subjected to his attitude and bad behavior.
Decent but boring and unremarkable food, disjointed and indifferent service, noisy surroundings, not pleasant in any way. Can’t believe this got a top 100 in the Bay Area from Bauer, especially when there are so many infinitely better choices in the City. Go figure.
Will not come back.
Food was better when it was in Oakland. Higher caliber.
Get the whole cooked fish.
Good food, good cocktails!
Fun vibe, delicious food, yummy cocktails. And reasonably priced! Will be a regular from now on.
Service mediocre. Seated quickly and server provided good input but then we didn't get one if the dishes we ordered and server didn't check in with us even one time about the food or whether we needed anything. I ended up hungry and sipping the melting ice water at the bottom of my cocktail.
The food we did get though was delicious. Tamarind egg drop noodles probably the highlight.
Some of the worst Thai food I’ve had. Greasy, salty slop.
Nice place but the food was too rich for me.
A go to for out of town guests, as well as a casual night out.
We are a group of foodie friends who love to enjoy different foods. The restaurant was a very fun place and our waiter was very accommodating to offer menu suggestions for the people in our group who don’t like spice. It was greatly appreciated.
My husband and I used to love Hawker Fare when it began in Oakland. Unfortunately, wanting a larger space in the hip SF Mission District did not necessarily result in the food or dining experience being better. Food was disappointing, except for the blistered green beans. Service was disjointed and noticeably understaffed. I received my fried chicken entree dish long before other dishes -- several small chunks of chicken with too much and too thick breading, looking more like the size of an appetizer than an entree; for the price, it should have at least been a thigh and leg. The pork sausage entree was OK, not as great as in the past. I hate to give such a negative review since I've always loved Hawker Fare's food previously and its concept.
Food was yummy but over priced for what it was and the portions were small.
Very delicious and flavorful food. We go at least once a month here! Love the green beans, brussels sprouts, fried chicken, ribs, and chicken and rice (chicken fat rice). Drinks are fun and delicious as well!
Overall, we had a poor experience at Hawker Fare. The food was okay but not memorable, and the service was terrible! After we ordered our waiter pretty much ignored us. Would’ve been nice to drink beers with our food, but no one came around to check on us.
It was also much too loud, we had real trouble hearing the waiter and each other.
Fun spot for a groups. Staff is great. Table wasn’t ready when we got there but they have a nice Tiki bar upstairs so we grabbed a cocktail while we waited. Food was pretty straight-up, nothing fancy but very yummy. Highly recommend red curry with tofu. Affordable priced for SF.
Had a reservation at 8:45 p.m. Showed up at 8:25 p.m. to check in with the host (who looked extremely stressed out), he told us to go upstairs, grab a drink and he would text me when our table was ready. At around 8:50 p.m., we went downstairs to check in again. The host said we were next, so we waited by the downstairs bar within his eyesight. He then sat a few more parties before us, so at 9:15 p.m. we checked in with him again because we saw this happening. He said he was trying to text us, but his phone was broken... we were sitting right next to the host stand... Strange experience.
it was a good dinner w/a friend. friendly service, great cocktails, delicious food, fun atmosphere (but a little loud for conversation)--looking forward to going back again soon.
Brussel sprouts are so good
We 'foodies were excited re: Hawker Fare. It was extremely disappointing. Wait person brought only 1 of 3 drinks we ordered, & forgot to put in order for 1 of 3 main dishes we'd asked for! Of 6 dishes ordered, the Papaya Salad and Gai Yang poached chicken were our best choices, but otherwise the food was very mediocre. We loved the colorful vibe as we walked in, however it was SO LOUD that it spoiled it all. With all the great/creative Thai restaurants in Bay area, keep walking..unless you like It LOUD...
We checked in with the hostess and were seated after she found my name on our reservation. After dinner, I got an email from Opentable that we were a no-show. I called the restaurant right away and they said they could not find my name on their computer. They said my reservation was deleted. WHAT? Why delete a reservation? Not a good practice of the restaurant. Will not recommend the restaurant to friends.
The food was amazing, full of flavor. Fried chicken, tofu curry and papaya salad was just perfect.
The portions were quite small but that’s better than a lot of tasteless food, so no issue there however the prices are expensive relative to portion, again it was delicious so worth it.
As for the drinks I can’t say much for the cocktails, we had three different drinks and they all pretty much tasted the same and were jammed with crushed ice. So I would skip the cocktails next time @$14 a piece it’s definitely not worth it which is a shame.
Incredible food. Excellent service.
Overall very. Poor experience didn’t listen to ooentable request and food and service was poor
Cool spot, delicious food and cocktails. Service was friendly albeit missing some points. Aesthetically pleasing environment with cool jams on the airwaves and an awesome cocktail program. Pretty casual.
Went to grab dinner with friends. None of us had been before. Made the reservation in advance. All of the food was delicious and our waitress was pleasant and helpful. Look forward to going again.
Great service, excellent food, good value. The room is very big and very noisy but really comfortable and casual. We enjoyed EVERY dish we ordered and decided this place is the real deal. There were four of us and we sampled six dishes...loved all of them.
I am profoundly hearing impaired, so next time I come...will be alone or with my hubby...too difficult to hear others...wish all restaurants had a quiet area...but doubt that will ever happen in my life time.
BUT..the food was worth it...will return.
Out of town family guests.
Great dinner for 3 before we went to The Chapel for a concert. Fabulous cocktails. Yummy food. Fun interior.
I have been here before so I knew what to expect and was pleasantly surprised that it was not as abrasively loud as other times, probably because we came at 6:30pm which was earlier & less busy than on past visits. The folding chairs may be part of the authentic “street food” atmosphere, but they are not very comfortable and there was no comfortable spot to put my purse so I had to sit with it wedged next to me. Minor detail, but oerhaps some chairs with backs or hooks under the tables would be a good addition to be able to hang stuff on for people seated in the middle of the the throng.
The food was good, a bit too sweet for my liking on the panaeang curry and the pieces of uncooked chicken fat on my dish was unappetizing, but mostly we enjoyed our meal. The main issue we had was that one of the waiters was wearing pathchouli. I may be more scent sensitive than some other people, but it was an unpleasant and overpowering and unpleasant scent that kept coming and going throughout our meal. I was hesitant to ask him for anything because I didn’t want to call him over, but there was a strong whiff of it that preceeded and followed him every time he swept past regardless. In my opinion, servers should refrain from wearing perfume, cologne, essential oils, musk & patchouli because string scents such as these are incompatible with the aroma of the food in a restaurant.
But, I love the sautéed green beans. And, generally speaking all the service was attentive and fast. Food was good.
Loved everything I had, but the tamarind egg drop curry noodles were just ridiculously good.
Too bad this place is not open for lunch on weekends. The place, the food is really good.
One of my favorite restaurants in SF> Great for a date, because it's fun, a little adventurous and amazing food. Love the drinks too!
Too noisy. Very few vegetarian options. Inconsistent service.
Great place but service is really slow. There was only one waitress for half the place. The food is very flavorful and a fun place to hang out.
