Gotham Bar and Grill
One of the secrets of Gotham's success is that it is an institution that has never become institutional. The unparalleled quality of the food and service are constants, but the rest of the Gotham experience is constantly updated to keep the restaurant feeling as fresh as the day it opened. New menu items are introduced each season, the wine list is always evolving, and the dining room is regularly revamped.
Gotham Bar and Grill has been honored as Most Outstanding Restaurant in the nation by the James Beard Foundation, which named Chef/Owner Alfred Portale Most Outstanding Chef in the nation for 2006.

The food was excellent. However the service was so slow that the meal took twice as long as it should have and we finally threatened the waitress that if desert didn't arrive within 10 minutes we would just get up and leave.
Service was outstanding. We had the lamb and signature cod dish. Both were memorable - cod had flavor throughout and was moist and flaky. Really special. Server was knowledgeable, friendly, and had a playful sense of humor. Lovely experience.
Truly wonderful food and superb service. We had our first date here and love returning.
We were there for a family reunion. Low noise level appreciated. Food very well prepared. Service outstanding.
Got together with a friend as we do periodically, and the dinner could not have been nicer. A terrific baby kale salad and seared foie gras were nice starters. Those were followed by farro risotto and halibut. And you don't have to break the bank to get a nice bottle of wine: there were several nice ones offered in the $100 range.
Excellent food and superb service. Thank you very much.
Excellent in all respects. The pear soufflé was so good we ordered a second.
Elegant but not pretentious. Classy but not uptight. Professional but not cold. Responsive but not intrusive. The gold standard for a classic NYC landmark restaurant.
We returned to mark an anniversary of a long ago first lunch during which there was another diner having a medical emergency at another table. I responded to a request for help and went to provide assistance to the woman until EMS arrived. My companion was very touched by the event and we’ve been together since.
I shared the story and then thanked the maitre d’ for arranging to have the woman faint that day many years ago.
I really wanted to love this meal. We ordered the deviled eggs for an appetizer and they were very good. Our server was fantastic. She had great knowledge of the menu and the sommelier had great suggestions as well. So I was very happy with everything up to that point. We ordered the wagyu strip streak to split simply because I wasn’t that hungry. I have had wagyu at Gordon Ramsey’s and Jeff Ruby’s. At Ramsey’s it was the best at Ruby’s it was still very good. Tender, flavorful, so this was my expectation going in. The plates came with the vegetables split and the steak served in the center. It was cut into 4 very large pieces, which I found strange for wagyu, but cooked to perfection, the medium rare we had specified. The first indication of a problem was when picking up the first piece to put on my plate. It seemed very dense and tough to get my fork into. Not at all what you would expect from Wagyu. Then, in taking my knife to the steak, I had trouble cutting. The other 2 times I have had this type of beef, I had remarked how I could cut it with my fork, so I knew there was an issue. When I put it in my mouth to chew it, I was shocked. I’m not sure what the issue was but it couldn’t have been Wagyu. I told the server and we sent it back. We ordered the tuna tartare instead. Again, we were going to split but she brought 2 saying she was concerned there wouldn’t be enough. For the 2 of us, my daughter and myself, 1 was plenty, but a nice gesture. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed with this dish. The tuna was fine but there wasn’t any wasabi or flavor. I was happy there wasn’t an issue but the lack of flavor was a disappointment. We had a lovely bottle of wine, I ordered a drink that I didn’t like but that can happen anywhere, we enjoyed the deviled eggs, had an underwhelming tuna tartare and my daughter had some tea for $180 with tip. Not really what I was expecting after reading the reviews here. Everyone can have an off night but this was just a miss for us.
Our waiter David was wonderful! Great food and ambiance. We enjoyed the dinner.
Especially notable service. Very much enjoyed every aspect.
Never failed to get an unbelievable steak. Great service with food (and wine!) to match. PS. Don’t ask if you have a pinot noir like my wife did and said ‘yes I’ll have that one’. It’s $48 for a glass! Aside from that love this place.
Our party of 4, a mini-reunion of college friends, enjoyed a delicious dinner before seeing the play "Gloria" at a nearby theatre. We met at the bar first and enjoyed the lively activity there. Once seated, we all loved our selections of appetizers and dinner choices, noting the outstanding wine collection. (We selected wines by the glass.) The service was impeccable. They made sure we were out with plenty of time to get to the show. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Always provides for a very enjoyable evening and fine dining experience. Extremely gracious, polished and friendly service, from the host reception, to the bartender to the serving staff.
We went to celebrate my mother's birthday. The food was superb and the service wonderful! We will continue to go back as we visit NY. as much as possible.
Outstanding! Ask for Dan as your waiter!
Great service and delicious food. Very attentive staff
Disappointed. Kind of a let-down. Ambiance and food were both just average.
Just a wonderful experience with great food and service as well as a wonderful sommelier. Highly recommend
Gotham Bar and Grill remains our New York favorite: excellent food, service and best of all ambiance.
The gold standard that fine restaurants are gauged by — simply the best restaurant in NY. Yes, there are much more expensive choices in NY, but Gotham should meet the highest standards.
Doesn’t get any better.
Thank you Gotham for another wonderful experience.
Overall, I rated this experience a 2 due to poor service from our waiter combined with food that was good, but not great. For a Michelin rated and highly renowned restaurant, I expected much more from this establishment. I was shocked by how aloof our waiter was the entire evening. He was disinterested from the onset, seemingly insincere throughout the evening and, at times, borderline rude. On our way out of the restaurant, I discretely flagged down a manager to provide feedback and specific examples. The tuna appetizer and the Gotham chocolate cake were both very good, the entrees (duck & surf and turf) were less desirable. Unfortunate dining experience for a special occasion.
Wonderful restaurant. Welcoming, great food and service. Beautiful surroundings.
We love coming back to Gotham every time we visit nyc. Great food and great atmosphere.
Excellent service and food
Meal was excellent and worth the Michelin star, the restaurant ambience was a little antiquated.
We went for brunch. Seating was unremarkable with a short wait. The burgers were delicious however had stomach issues after. Also had dessert , chocolate cake which was superb but they never offered coffee or tea with it. I guess they forgot . It would have been nice to have tea with our cake.
Few things in life rarely improve with age, they only become more rare. Gotham is both. Gracious and accommodating service, spectacular REAL food, a comfortable and lively dining room representing the genuine New York fine dining experience, and menu pricing that doesn’t exclude most of us from feeling on top of the world for several hours. Very special indeed.
This is my favorite restaurant in NY and try to enjoy once or twice a year. We were disappointed that we were tucked away in the corner window table, as we could not enjoy the normally beautiful dining room ambiance. Also disappointing was the servers obvious displeasure that we did not want to order all of our dinner courses at once. We prefer to order after appetizers, but this seemed inconvenient for him.
Still I will return. The surf and turf was amazing!
Still quintessential NY.
I have loved the Gotham for years. A group of friends often comes for a special lunch. The food was very good but small portions for the high price. The waiter was very dour--surprising for such a special place. The wine is always very good. I do love that they have a prix fixe of sorts....the pasta dish was very good, the black cod also.....
Loved Gotham! Food was fantastic and atmosphere was great. Only complaint I have is that our server was really snooty towards us and I had to ask several people to bring me my wine.
Excellent food...much better than our previous experiences!
Outstanding service with a great attention to detail. Our waiter “David” was excellent and really made us feel welcome. The food was just ok. Given the very high prices for the food one expects more.
Excellent and professional, as always
Glad to see it’s still going strong and still of the highest standard - with a Michelin star to prove it. Expensive even at lunch but quality and service come at a price.
One of the most attentive and professional staff engagements of any restaurant in New York. The food and wine selection is second to none. Marvelous experience as usual...
