The menu features a "signature" Meatloaf, New York Steak, Southern-style pan-fried chicken, crab cakes, Cobb salad, and Firehouse chili.
The weekly chef “specials” feature fresh grilled fish such as salmon, sea bass and seasonal vegetables. Daily soups include corn chowder, chicken tortilla lime, tomato basil, broccoli and many other rotating favorites.
The restaurant is reminiscent of the classic grills of San Francisco and New York - mahogany booths, white linen tables, granite bar and original brass fire pole - housed in a restored 1912 Los Angeles firehouse.
What a great place! Food was delish and service was great! Fast and friendly.
Located in a historic firehouse, lots of history. The staff was knowledgeable about the history and was happy to share a few stories.
Defiantly will be dinning here again when back in this part of LA.
Overpriced for the quality of food...good, but not great.
This is a very nice old fashion steak house with great service. The ambiance is lovely and the steaks are cooked perfect. Great place for date night after the theater.
As always, this restaurant is a great place to meet for lunch, including a business lunch. Close to the subway station at 7th and Figueroa Streets, a great historic location with a wonderful range of menu items, including comfort foods, in large proportions. The fresh warm bread to begin the meal is always welcome.
No one to greet guests when we came in . Waited around for awhile before bartender came to help . Food quality gone down over the years . Lobster roll is not a lobster roll. It is deep fried something .
It needs to be clear on the menu that it is deep fried food. Service so slow eventhough restaurant not busy at all. Ice tea refills had to be asked each time and had to look around for waiter.
Steak sandwich over done . Fries soggy . Very sad and disappointing . We used to love to come to this place .
This is an iconic location in downtown LA that has been allowed to languish a bit since its heyday. The food was good, the service at the bar was good. It's just not the place it once was.

We walked in and it was super smoky due to the bbq grill right outside the door. I didn’t notice it too much at first until we sat down. Another turn off was they were playing loud Spanish music. Nothing against Spanish music at all however, just not what we were expecting for a historic firehouse. Food didn’t make up for it. Won’t be returning.
Being that our office is right across the street from Engine Co. and we dine here often with our brokers, yesterdays service was NOT per usual. I had the cup of chili which I absolutely love and yesterday, I seemed to get a bowl that was full of fatty meat. Also, we were there for about 2 hours and our drinks were only refilled once. After we finished eating, the waiter didn't ask if we wanted dessert, coffee, nothing. We sat for another 10-15 minutes before he brought the check.
It was nice to see a downtown restaurant that I used to go to when I worked downtown still in business. As always the food and service were outstanding. I hope they stay around for many years.
Despite a fairly gloomy presentation, the food was quite good although the service a bit erratic. A few minutes wait at the front door and a similar wait for a glass of water are not really acceptable in today’s restaurant scene.
We love the 80’s music that was playing. My mom ordered the Southern fried chicken and it was awesome. My bro loved his meatloaf while my sis in law and I loved our steaks. I always see this place in DTLA and have always wanted to eat here but never got the chance. There is a reason why you guys have been around all these years.
Valet guy was always on his cell phone though. I had to get out of our car to find him.

Great food, fun decor and friendly service. Nice bar with top shelf choices and beer tap options. Everyone enjoys trying on the LAFD helmets and jackets! Casual and fun. Highly recommend.
Super slow service given no one was in the restaurant. Food was extremely salty.
A good burger in an old firestation. Unfortunately we went on Sunday at lunch time and the place was pretty quiet.
A good variety of food choices. Food taste is very good and the service is above average. I would recommend this to any looking for a change from the dull and boring chain restaurants.
My wife and loved this restaurant. The old firehouse setting is very cool. We had their signature meatloaf and fired chicken dinners. This isn't something I would normally order but it turned out to be a great choice and lived up to it's reputation.

Valet expensive and slow. Service was slow and they tried to overcharge me for the food and possibly did for the drink. They did not confirm my reservation check in so I had to straighten things out with Open Table.
The food was so flavorful and tasty and we had a nice wonderful lunch. Enjoyed the history of the place and the service was awesome!! Will be back soon.

We got there late thanks to my underestimating how long it would take, then had to wait for the valet. Chad, our waiter, was very attentive and super helpful. We were running late to get back to Union Station, so Chad asked the valet to get the car while he packed up our leftovers so we could catch the train on time. The valets are really for the restaurant next door, so they put those folks first. Since Chad told us that, we were prepared and made the train. The food was yummy, the wine was tasty, and we were there ahead of the dinner rush so it wasn't crowded or loud. Dad loved the architecture, too. I've been there before and was happy to return, and will so again.
Great food however the service was slow and we were the only guests in the restaurant!
Fantastic brunch in a beautiful court yard. Wonderful service and excellent cocktails. Probably the BEST burger in town. Also loved their soft scrambled eggs. Looking forward to going back!
Fish was poorly prepared and returned. Protein ended up last piece so had to opt for other fish—-well cooked but not a great flavor. Plain. Sorry to say I won’t be returning to this restaurant
My boyfriend is a fireman so I thought it would be nice to treat him to lunch for Father's Day. He ordered the steak and was impressed with how tender and flavorful it was. We would definitely come back to try other items on the menu.
Julio made my birthday extra special. He brought humor to the table and CHEESECAKE!
Great for dining before the theatre. Julio, our waiter, was diligent to get us to the theatre on time.
Everything about Engine No 28 was special from the greeting to our departure. The restaurant's unique atmosphere in a restored 1912 firehouse, the convenience (next door to a metro stop), the menu, the very reasonable prices, and the service all made our experience perfect. We came for brunch but will return to try other meals soon. The breakfast menu was extensive. My husband enjoyed the eggs Benedict and I had scrambled eggs. The roast potatoes were a delicious change from hash-browns, and the cup of fresh seasonal fruit was a very nice bonus. The service was great, thanks to our terrific server, Maria, who was neither intrusive nor unavailable. She was promptly responsive and very friendly, offering us a brief history of the firehouse and the original artifacts incorporated into the restaurant's design. We will return.
Visiting from Chicago with my wife I wanted to find a nice place for dinner. Her grandfather was a Chicago firefighter so finding this restaurant I felt was a no brainer, and we were not disappointed! Our server was awesome, the food was amazing and we spent well over 2 hours there! They allowed my wife and her aunt to wear the old fireman jackets and take pictures too, very cool!
We went for an early dinner at the Engine Company No 28. Even though the restaurant was not full, the service was slow and indifferent. The food was good, but not great. Nothing special about he presentation, the taste or the quality of the food. The menu choices also did not afford anything that was extraordinary. If you are looking for a very plain dinning experience, with indifferent service then this is the place. If you are looking for something really special there are other restaurants within blocks of this restaurant, the will more fully fit the bill.
The interior was amazing. Beautiful setting. The food and service could use some work. My friend ordered the ricotta pancakes with whipped cream and strawberries. When the meal came it looked like normal pancakes with no whipped cream or strawberries. When we asked the waiter he wound up bringing a bowl of whipped cream over and then telling us that they were out of the ricotta so the pancakes were plain. Had we not already waited like 20 mins for our order to arrive, we would have asked them to correct the order. As it was, we were hungry and willing to put up with the error so we could get out as quickly as possible.
The food was fine, the service needs help. We went for Mother’s Day brunch. It seemed like the did not want to be there.
It has been several years since the last time I dined here. With this I was going off fond memories of an older, polished wait staff not the hostess greeting us seating us and waiting on us.
We arrived on Mother’s Day and downtown has virtually no parking, I would have gladly paid for valet!
The hostess seated us and then took our drink orders. The 3 course meal had a choice of soup or salad, 3 entrees, and two deserts.
The salad was good the soup cold.
The chicken and waffles were way under cooked. The desserts were fine.
The issue was we had 4 different people piecing together the service so it was very inconsistent.
Sad to see this location go down hill.

Second time at this restaurant. This time we arrived early and sat at the bar. We were so entertained by our bartender, Julio, that we ended up having diner at the bar. This is a fun, welcoming place with great food. My husband went with the restaurant fav, meatloaf, and I went with one of the specials, sole. Both were excellent and accompanied by delicious garlic mashed potatoes and yummy veggies. Portions were large and prices very reasonable. And don’t forget dessert! Best NY cheesecake since leaving N.Y.! Go! And say hello to Julio!
Unfortunate to see how Engine Co. has declined over the last five or so years. I remember it being hip and bustling with excellent food. Now empty, in need of some serious care, and the food is, well, bad across the board. Maybe someone can come invest, take over, and give this unique location the attention it deserves.
