Kawabun is excellent. It's housed in what used to be Kajitsu. A waft of incense greets you upon arrival and transports you to Japan. Climb the stairs to an elegant, understated room with hanging Noguchi lamps. The noise level is low, so you can have a great conversation. The tempura moriawase set at lunch is a deal at $28. Don't skip the desserts: the sake miso ice cream is exotic; the refreshing yuzu sorbet was the perfect antidote to a hot day. Service is thoughtful.

I love this place. Their food is unique and great tasting flavors of Japan & Thailand. There is a Happy Hour is 5 to 7 p.m. They have great signature cocktails and small plates on this menu as well as there regular menu. The Tiger Margarita is spicy and delicious. We always get the Hoy Yai Oysters (3 in order so we get two of those) and Tuna Rice Crackers (2 pieces) and then some others on regular menu or share entre. I am trying to get a group together so we can try more things! Know that there are stairs to go up a flight behind the colorful door.

Elbow was on my bucket list long ago and I never got a chance to go. I have eaten at Jose Andres’s restaurants in DC, but it was excited to try this new spot while I was back home in New York. It didn’t disappoint. Bring your wallet, but it’s worth it.
