Char Steak & Lounge
With refined and approachable service, the menus offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Featuring our wood-fired grilled steaks to homemade pastas, fresh fish, and masterfully in-house crafted desserts.
Variety of menu options and price ranges! Nice atmosphere and very professional staff.
Char is a great choice if you are looking for a relaxing meal. Although it is what most people would consider pricey, in my opinion, it is worth every penny. The food was beyond excellent!!! I’ve been to many “overpriced” restaurants in my life and most of them were not worth what we paid for the meal. I will go again in the future!
My steak was amazing!!! My husband got the pasta special and it was very bland to say the least. It was supposed to be a spicy seafood pasta and the seafood was over done and the pasta had no spice to it. Overall we would definitely come back and give it another shot. It's beautiful and the service was beyond amazing
I am a foodie and don't mind paying for good food but this place is way over priced. Portions are very small, quality is good but nothing extraordinary. The wait staff was inattentive and didn't even keep our water glasses filled. We sat outside which was nice but there is a flat screen TV that was showing an infomercial??? We won't be back.
Service is a combination of weird and indifferent and arrogant - not everyone but most. Bartender at The View was a piece of work -acts like he is in TriBeCa not Rochester - wicked full of himself. Took 25 minutes to get an order of oysters and a couple of salads- didn’t come out until we asked for them. Steaks were good but overpriced, side dishes were ok - brocollini to good- Gallett
Great food and service. Felt like I was at a steak house in New York or Chicago. Service level from the servers, busboys and greeters out of this world!! Food cooked to perfection
Fantastic food , great outdoor atmosphere and service
Breakfast was so good very filling could not eat everything so delicious
Poor service. Ordered appetizers and the server never placed the order. It took over 30 minutes to order our main course. The food was not very good. For someone who loves salt... the food was too salty. I was disappointed as were my guests
Paulie, our server was very attentive, helpful and charming.
Food was very good--but way too overpriced
Portions much too small for the $$
My husband and I love going to Char for special occasions. It’s expensive, but it’s beyond worth it. You definitely get what you pay for. We have gone over 10 times and are blown away with the meals every time. You can’t go wrong with their steaks. This past visit we got the calamari appetizer and it was amazing. The service is always very attentive. We went for our anniversary this year. On the Open Table reservation I checked that it was for an anniversary, not thinking much of it at all. I was pleasantly surprised when the hostess said happy anniversary when seating us. Then was really stunned when we were given champagne and dessert. It just shows how great the service is there!
Great spacious bar area and the food is excellent. The outdoor area is great in the summer
Our server was great as was the food. When we arrived there were the booths I requested empty. We were rid it would be 10 minutes. We stood outside and I realized it was ridiculous to stand there when we could be sitting and waiting. I told the hostess we would prefer to just sit in the booth and wait. She said ok she would get some menus and be right back we waited another few minutes and the I said to my friends let’s just sit this is ridiculous! We sat and our server came over immediately. After that everything was fine.
The tuna which was a cold dish was very fishy and warm. We could not eat it.
Drinks took a long time every time we ordered them.
Over priced for portion sizes. Consider at least serving with a side dish.
Steaks were good but not very big for the cost.
The table was not cleaned well when we sat down. We could not hear/understand the server easily. Food was better than ok but not special.
Great steaks, sides and salads. The service was attentive but not interrupting.
Dined at Char on numerous occasions. One of the few restaurants in Rochester that I can honestly say this about....I have never had a bad meal.
The menu is varied, the food prepared to perfection and the service is always top notch.
We will return!
We will be there tonight entertaining a party of eight. Love Char.
Cooked perfectly, great cut of meat and as far as I am concerned they have the best steak in Rochester.
For the prices this place commands- the experience was a complete disappointment from being seated, through service or lack there of and menu?!? This was a special occasion too. Everyone- not just me was underwhelmed, aggravated and felt ripped off...
This is the 4th time I've dined at Char. Their main flaws are lack of food quality and service. First, the food is not nearly good enough for the price that they charge. This last visit, I ordered the special which was a "Wagyu Strip" with a marble score of 7. I have eaten plenty of steaks in my life and have had many wagyu steaks and I know that it was not as advertised. It was tough and flavorless. I would say my meals for 3 out of my 4 visits were not good. The pricing is ridiculously high for the quality you receive. Other restaurants throughout the city and surrounding areas have much better food and for a lesser price. I am happy to spend on a good meal but it has to be deserving of such a hefty price. Second, the waiters are not organized at all. They do not check in enough or at the correct times. They lack the professionalism that other restaurants' staff have i.e. Rooney's. I am sorry to say I will not go back and would not recommend.
Excellent food, drinks and service. Back room was loud as there was a table of 20 something year olds that were hooting, hollering and F-bombing. Other than that everything was great!
Every aspect of our meal was phenomenal. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Service was perfect. Atmosphere was perfect. MOD was perfect. Thank you!
Excellent service, food was outstanding. Very enjoyable evening.
It feels like your on vacation, the staff was great and the food was even better.
I don't think a review here could possibly do Char or my experience there justice. My wife and I went for Dinner on a Saturday night for her birthday, and then came back the next morning to meet her parents and the kiddos for their Brunch service. We had never been there before, but one thing I can say that is representative of our experience is that I can remember and have fondness even for the servers. Our dinner's head waiter was David, and he had help from Brian - a great friendly knowledgeable team. Our Brunch's waitress was Courtney. Hostesse "Cat" was at the front of the house for both meals, so it was fun running into her again and feeling sheepish about explaining our two visits in such quick succession. I haven't even described the food. I normally eat my steak's Medium, to Medium Rare. I had a Filet so I usually go towards Medium on those thicker cuts. The meat was delicious. It was so good, I had to have more so I splurged and ordered the Steak & Eggs for breakfast. The $10 side of Fries was amazing, not too much parmesan or salt, and the Beef Tartare, too, was amazing. If there was a low point? The other $10 side we ordered, the asparagus - that was the only "meh" part of the entire ordeal. 10/10, would dine again.
Food was not well prepared, and over priced. Dining area was dingy and dated.
Steak was ordered medium and came raw. Crab was rubbery, an overall bad experience. Would never recommend this place to anyone.
The food, as always, was excellent. Our waitress was pleasant, alert, and efficient. Somehow, without our ever noticing, our water glasses were always full. When the waitress learned we were celebrating the retirement of a valued friend and colleague, she voluntarily brought a special dessert to our retiree.
Our server, Erin, was amazing! She was so descriptive when it came to explaining the specials to us; she didn’t miss a beat! We were celebrating my fiancé’s 29th birthday and he loved everything! Food was great, service was great, ambiance was amazing. Whoever came up with the overall design of the restaurant, job well done. The lighting fixtures are very unique and chic! The bar back wall is captivating.
Thank you for making my fiancés birthday dinner special!
overpriced, second server came up and said would be our server after first server already got our drinks and told us about the menu ? My steak was supposed to be medium well, it was rare, my husband had rare order, was mixed up, won’t go back
Great place for business lunch.
Food has always been top notch, everything they do is good. Service was friendly and efficient. The thing that bugged the heck out of me was the new $5 valet charge. I’ve always been very good to the valet employees. But now you have to go to the front desk and pay $5 and get your ticket stamped. Then pay the valet kids. This is one of the most expensive restaurants in Rochester, and I can’t believe they can’t validate your parking and feel the need to nickel and dime their customer. My future business will now go to other top steak houses that don’t feel the need to stick you with a mandatory parking fee.
For the price this meal was very disappointing. I ordered the rack of lamb medium rare and it came out medium to medium well. The presentation was lacking with 3 lamb chops uncut. Perhaps the chef couldn’t tell how much he cooked the meat. My wife ordered the Branzini special (white fish) which was breaded and according to her quite dry with not much flavor. The lamb chops lacked character and the dipping sauce was just okay. It would have been better with mint jelly. I added asparagus as an ala carte item which was sautéed in butter which was adequate but again not that of a high end restaurant. We shared the banana crime brûlée which was good but not outstanding. The fare was more of a mid priced restaurant than the high end Char espouses to be. The drinks and service were good, so I gave an overall rating of 3 stars, otherwise I would have been in 1-2 territory. Not sure what has happened but my experience was much better a year ago.
This was a special anniversary dinner for us. I mentioned it on the reservation and we had a nice table with privacy. We ordered glasses of wine (wonderful selections) and then had a lobster salad that was delicious and we each had filet mignon which was cooked to perfection. We ordered two sides to share and it was too much food for us. The mushroom risotto was delicious and would have been enough. We saved room for the chocolate budino and it was light and a perfect ending to a wonderful meal. Our waiter was very kind and attentive and paced the meal well. To our pleasant surprise the wine was a gift from the restaurant for our anniversary!!! It was a delicious meal, a wonderful dining experience and we will definitely be back!!
The service was great food was good! Our waitress was awesome..
Our waiter Russell (as well as one of our regular waiters, Laura who stopped by to say hello and wish my daughter a happy birthday) was fantastic. Just the right amount of contact and incredibly personable.
Fun , lively atmosphere! Impeccable service . Impeccable staff . It is our "go to" place in the city
We took my mother to brunch at char. We walked in right at noon there were already some very boisterous people at the bar. This bar attracts a louder crowd. I convince my mother who is elderly to sit at the table furthest from the bar. The food is truly excellent and we all had great meals The service was very good as well. I would definitely call back for brunch or lunch I would probably hesitate to go for dinner given the bar crowd some of the women were dressed scantily I’m glad we were sitting far away
