What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
8.4

The plates at Al's Place in the Mission look like art, and taste pretty great too. "Best New Restaurant in the US 2015" ain't a bad calling card either.

Ratings 8.0-8.5:The best way to think about restaurants in the low to mid 8′s is that these are the places you would absolutely go back to, anytime. These restaurants are ones that you want to bring a friend to, just so they can also experience the duck carnitas, or burger, or whatever dish the place is known for.

It was seriously one of the best meals I have ever had. Although the prix fix was somewhat expensive - it was worth every penny and actually not expensive at all for what you got!!!

Everything was over seasoned. My mouth hurt from all the salt. Really delicious food that would have been great if the seasoning was balanced. Dissapointing.

Loved the food, ambiance/decor, and (hip-hop) music. It's definitely not for everyone (I wouldn't bring my parents) but seems like a great fit for a younger group of foodie friends.

The service and pacing of the food was a little fast/rushed. We ordered multiple courses and wine, and we were in and out in about an hour.

We had heard so many good reviews about AL's place, but had several dishes that were not very good (salty and acidic). I am hoping it was just an off day, but of the 10 dishes we had, we really only enjoyed 3-4.

From the service, the food, the ambience, to the personal touches - AL’s Place delivered on all counts. It was me and my fiancée’s 5 year anniversary and we enjoyed a complementary glass of champagne on the house and very caring service from the waiters and the owner of the restaurant. All the food was thoughtfully prepared, our personal favorite was the charred fish at the end with the miso sauce - to die for! I would absolutely come back again.

The first time was pretty amazing, so I was stoked to re- visit. Unfortunately, they don't pay attention to small details and will ask multiple times through your dining experience if you have dined before. The food was alright. Make sure you go to Blue Bottle for coffee afterwards, since they don't do coffee service anymore.

Food was a slight disappointment. Had then steak tartar but the horseradish was SO overpowering that it wasn't very enjoyable. The brine fries were delicious and the other dishes were good, but then dessert was very odd and unsatisfying. I don't like overly sweet desserts, but the coconut mousse was flavorless and had carrot strips in it along with pieces of citrus fruit with no sweetness components. Doubt we will be back as there are better restaurants in my opinion.

The family style menu was a fantastic dining experience. One of us is vegetarian while the other one eats meat, they happily accommodated us and brought out separate veg vs meat options when need be.
Overall we found the cold dishes and snackables more interesting than the warm dishes and limited availability meat sides but all in all the food was great.
The wine pairing had a selection of unusual but tasty wines.

Service was excellent but the noise level was so high I did not enjoy the time there. Some presentations were confusing such as greens on the steak tartar which made it hard to mix in the egg underneath into the steak. I would recommend it to any foodie but go with the expectation that it will be loud.

Incredible energy in the kitchen. We sat at the bar counter and really enjoyed seeing all of the action in the kitchen. Everything we ordered had interesting textures and the flavors were all really good. Our bartender/server was really friendly and kept good conversation while we waited on our food. He also recommended a lot of great dishes. The space is smaller, but cozy. Staff is really efficient and stylish.

Are the vegetarian family style option. Thought it was really tasty and worth it for the amount of food you get. Would have liked more variety in vegetables used. For example felt cauliflower was used too much in more than 1 dish

Very enjoyable dining experience here. Service was very attentive but friendly and casual, and pacing, in general, was good. The food was delicious and interesting. The house cocktails complimented the food well. I especially liked the crudité platter with radishes and bok choy; it was beautiful & extremely flavorful, showing off the fresh vegetables extremely well. I will definitely return. A few small things would have made my experience better:

1) When we ordered, I mentioned that my dining partner is vegetarian & I ordered a seafood dish for me. His hot meal came coursed before the crab, so he had to sit & watch me eat it, which was uncomfortable for him.

2) The crab dish was delicious, but served too hot and was extremely messy. A heads up from the wait staff that the dish is messy would have been helpful, and some wet towels and crab forks, etc. would have been appreciated.

Otherwise we really enjoyed our meal here. The space is laid out well, and even though the restaurant was at capacity right at opening, we never felt hectic or rushed. The staff is very professional and obviously had a busy restaurant very well under control. Looking forward to another visit.

My 1 star rating is a tribute to the 1 star Michelin this restaurant has received in what seems to be the greatest hoax in SF culinary history. We had the tasting menu: 9 of 10 dishes were just plain bad and oh so salty. This was indeed a sad (but also funny) experience.

I appreciate all hands on deck but this was too much. Also, I think the “Michelin “ pressure has affected the restaurant. The meals felt rushed, and I didn’t enjoy the experience as I did a year ago.

Overall it was a great experience, though it's a bit loud inside. Food highlights were the chawanmushi and the sunchoke curry but almost all of the 13 dishes we ordered were delicious (not a huge fan of the brined French fries).

The food was delicious but our table was right in the middle of the restaurant closest to the kitchen and it seemed there were people running past us all evening and lots of hands reaching in to grab plates and drinks before we were completely finished with them. Our waitress was moving so quickly she had sweat dripping down her forehead and her energy was very frantic, which detracted from the otherwise delightful and innovative food and drinks.

Six of us were served the family style menu. Ten dishes came out in rapid succession. We were done in little more than an hour. Nothing I ate would I categorize as memorable, or especially delicious. The service was excellent. The room was so loud I couldn't hear the person sitting next to me. It was an $800 meal, including tip. I won't be returning.

Overall, I was a bit disappointed with the meal. Vegetables were cooked in a unique, tasty way. Really enjoyed the burrata! French fries were disappointing, though the sauce was great. Tartare was too salty, and thought the sashimi dish I got had a tiny amount of fish when compared to the amount of potatoes on the plate.

Overall, good food, not worth the value when compared to other Michelin restaurants, and likely won’t go back.

There isn’t a better restaurant to celebrate a special event whether an anniversary or birthday. First, they always read your open table requests and do their very best to accommodate...and always add a few unexpected twists. Second, if you arrive at 5:30, the staff welcomes you unlike any restaurant opening I’ve experienced. Third, the plates are uniquely prepared with unusual and outstanding combinations of ingredients. Every bite is like nothing you’ve experienced. We love Al’s and for all these reasons we have made it our special place.
